Everyone in the press -- myself included -- is whining about the inability to interview Gov. Sarah Palin. Or, at least shout-out a question or two to Sen. John McCain's choice for vice president.
Although considering the speed of light in which a gaffe can travel in this campaign season, her decision to steer clear of reporters may be a very wise one.
Reason enough to contact my fellow journalists to help me compile a Top Ten List of "I can't believe he/she just said that" reasons why Sarah Palin doesn't want to take questions from us:

Salena you can take this personally if you wish yet it is directed at all parts of the MSM. 99.9% clearly are Obama presstitutes.....even that POS O’Reilly is trashing conservatives etc .....Calling Sarah’s experience as insufficient. That was the point of the story, smart move I say, given the immediate attacks on her before she even opened her mouth. Imagine the attacks once she does.
I’m sure Sarah has no trouble interfacing with REAL journalists. But there are so few of them and so many make-believe, pinko butt-wipe pretenders out there, it’s just easier to ignore the crowd and move along without playing their silly “gotcha” games.

Like actors, politicians manipulate their images professionally. You seem to be of the opinion that Sarah Palin should be like one of the attention whores who goes on, say, The Jerry Springer Show to debase herself in exchange for camera time. Why? She doesn't need you to get her message out and she's made it clear she isn't the least bit interested in your opinions. Get this straight: Sarah Palin will do press appearances when or if she decides you can be useful to her and not the other way around. You exist to project her image. The fact that she understands you will shamelessly manipulate whatever few sound-bites you find and has refused to throw grist under the mill wheel is a sign of good judgment. The fact that a gaffe-a-minute consummate Washington insider doesn't know well enough to keep his mouth shut is evidence that Yerboy doesn't have any.
Your column is, quite simply laughable. You could easily fill it entirely with gaffes by any liberal politician you wanted to, yet I have to reread the same tired, thoroughly played CRAP about Dan Quayle, or the Clinton administration's propaganda about why Newt Gingrich lost the budget showdown.
You are an enabler for an increasingly irrelevant segment of public communications and a propagator of the preposterous contention that an appearance on Meet the Press is somehow a better qualification than running the largest state in the country, or being a small town mayor, or frankly, just chairing a PTA meeting. Palin is playing the press like a fiddle.
She is making the press reveal their absurdity as they lust after her imagined potential gaffes. If only the press could get their hands on her, surely Palin would say something that could be distorted, taken out of context, and used to pillory her.
The Campbell Brown vomit on CNN is a good example of how a self-important kneepad partisan reveals itself as smarmy pseudo”journalist”. Campbell is concerned about the poor wilting flower that is Palin ... what crap.
The art in this war is all on Palin’s side. She is letting the press beat themselves, weaken themselves, lower themselves, all in a very public way. And trust me, the public is enjoying watching it happen.
From now on, she talks over you, around you, but never, ever through you.
With that said, it is obvious you see the problem with Palin and taking questions from reporters right now. Whatever she does they will criticize her anyway. I heard someone find fault with her because they said this shouldn't be a training ground, and that Obama takes questions. However, they seem to forget that he has had 17+months of press coverage and many times, especially in the beginning, he told them to leave him (and his family) alone. We all should remember the famous "Can I just eat my waffle?" And he outright threatened some networks if they ran an ad that he did not like. Sarah has only a few weeks at national exposure, and she is preparing much more quickly than Obama did...and even meeting with national leaders to boot and gaining in-depth, first hand information about their objectives. That is better than all the second-hand guessing or being spoon-fed information that Obama depends on. No one stopped him (or Biden) from requesting time with them - wonder why they didn't? It is clear that Sarah has not been nearly as arrogant with the press as Obama. Yet, for some reason the media lays at his feet...and adores him...like the dumb wife who keeps going back to the husband who abuses her because she "loves" him. What is wrong with them?

I, for one, am glad you are reading the FR and paying enough attention to our concerns to be part of our group and give us your insight! Hang in there, Salena, there are folks here who appreciate you.
P.S. I used to live in your immediate coverage area (Irwin) and know your paper well. Keep working to get those Pennsylvanians over to the RIGHT side in this election. We need PA to go with McCain and Palin and that can only happen if the areas around Pittsburgh and Philadelphia (where the Dems have such a stronghold) have access to read articles by reporters who are not so left-wing.
Its not that she wont answer questions, none of them do even when they’re speaking. It’s that she is very popular which ensures the reporter a prime time spot on the evening news cast. If they can trick her into a gaff its even better for airtime.
It’s all about them.
The fact that the media has made it clear that they are partisan and oppositional toward Sarah Palin, has made the situation what it is. I think that if a reporter covered some of her appearances in a fair way, access might be gained. At this point, it just isn’t going to happen.

Her newspaper might not be perfect. I've disagreed with it many times and even cancelled a subscription once when they endorsed that crook Jack Murtha for re-election. But I can tell you that Salena is a genuinely warm and wonderful person, and a great writer. We're lucky to be able to read what she writes here often before it makes the Tribune-Review, even for those of us in the local market.

As to what I would do, I am not sure. The press in a large part created this problem by so horridly attacking her and her family that were I the McCain campaign I would be leary too. Having said that, certainly she can gaffe no louder than her competitor, Joe Biden.
Ask my kids, I am horrible at decisions because I look at both sides all of the time. :)
