At 400ft and 3 kts on patrol you can go in circles all day long.
My boy is on the USS Ohio currently in Guam. There are big problems with the nuclear navy. Nukes are retiring in huge numbers and not being replaced. They are quitting because of the salaries offered in the private sector and the killing work routines nukes are put into. Fewer nukes are in the pipeline, too. Big problems which will continue until the pay is doubled and the work loads reduced.
I am sure the Zero will take care of this with a wave of his mighty arm.
It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that this was a maintenance error. I can’t say what their procedures are or aren’t, ‘cuz I’m an old Airedale, not a Bubblehead... but I will bet you a Buffalo Nickel that you can in fact tag out the rudder on a nuclear submarine for routine maintenance at sea.
I hear you. I'm in pharmaceutical manufacturing and we train quarterly on lockout/tagout. And Lord help you if you are working with a partner and there aren't two locks engaged.
You are correct, sir. I consulted with my Darlin’ after I posted and he said she went west.
Black shoe surface myself - procedures were in place to tag out even underway on FFG and flattop if called for...and lord knows we were made to figure out how to fight with the thing jammed to one side or the other in reftra. However, it doesn’t appear that tagging was the issue here, but improper cordoning of the open grates or just shabby seamanship. We obviously don’t know everything, but from what has been posted it appears that there was a lack of judgement on shifting to local controls. I would guess he was wedged tight and even an incremental caused the extent of injury. If he wasn’t tight they would have found a way to lift/twist him out by removing additional grates, etc. Course I’m guessing too. Damn shame. Prayers to the family.
That was true in 1984 when I joined the Navy. :)
Dang.
My condolences to his family and shipmates.
My son is on that boat right now. I’m very concerned.
Thank you for the ping. My Husband signed.
