~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ The United States Air Force Honor Guard
Headquartered at Bolling Air Force Base, the United States Air Force Honor Guard is the official ceremonial unit of the U.S. Air Force. The Air Force Honor Guard reports to the 11th Wing in the Air Force District of Washington. Its beginnings trace back to the Air Force's infancy when Headquarters Command, U.S. Air Force, activated the 1100th Air Police Squadron as a ceremonial detachment in September 1948. Because of transfers and attrition, the detachment was disbanded by the end of the year; it was not until March 1949 that sufficient personnel were assigned to enable the unit to function. Later, on January 1, 1972, the Air Force Honor Guard became the separate unit known today.
The mission of the United States Air Force Honor Guard is to render military honors in Arlington National Cemetery and represent the United States Air Force in ceremonies and official events involving the President, senior Department of Defense and Air Force leaders, and in Joint Service ceremonies. The Honor Guard recruits, retains and inspires Airmen, through elite, precision Drill Team performances and is responsible for training and standardizing all Base Honor Guard programs.
The Air Force Honor Guard Drill Team is the traveling component of the United States Air Force Honor Guard and inspires Air Force awareness among military and civilian audiences through its complex drill routine. In all they do, the Drill Team personifies the integrity, discipline, teamwork, and professionalism of every Airman and every Air Force mission. During the Air Force Honor Guard's 60-year history, the Drill Team has performed in every state of the union and many countries abroad. He Watches Over Us
From the place of His dwelling He looks on all the inhabitants of the earth. Psalm 33:14
In the early 1960s, I read the novel
1984 by George Orwell, which made famous the phrase Big Brother is watching you. In this imaginary society, all aspects of life are under surveillance.
Today, there are an estimated 4.2 million closed-circuit video cameras in the UK alone! London is saturated with them. These cameras watch lobbies and sidewalks for security reasons. They even monitor traffic.
Psalm 33 tells us that God is also watching from on high (v.14). He sees not just images and activities but discerns thoughts and motives. As Creator God, when He speaks, it will be done (v.9). His eternal purposes march on unhindered (vv.10-11). Earthly obstacles are mere steppingstones to Him. Though many may depend on military strength for deliverance and safety, their hope is in vain (vv.16-17).
Yet we who fear the Lord need not flee from this awesome God. The psalmist affirms, The eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy . . . . He is our help and our shield (vv.18,20).
The eye of the Lord may be fearsome, but we who trust in Him rejoice. He is not an intrusive Big Brother but our loving heavenly Father who watches over us.
The Rock of Ages stands secure,
He always will be there;
He watches over all His own
To calm their anxious care. Keith

BLESS THIS HOUSE Bless this house O Lord we pray; Make it safe by night and day;
Bless these walls so firm and stout, Keeping want and trouble out:
Bless the roof and chimneys tall, Let thy peace lie over all;
Bless this door, that it may prove ever open to joy and love.
Bless these windows shining bright, Letting in God's heav'nly light;
Bless the hearth a'blazing there, with smoke ascending like a prayer;
Bless the folk who dwell within, keep them pure and free from sin;
Bless us all that we may be Fit O Lord to dwell with thee;
Bless us all that one day we May dwell O Lord with thee.

Practically a restaurant standard, most people don't realize that these lyrics, to the tune of "The William Tell Overture", were written by Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera for the episode titled "The Hot Piano".

Good evening, Kathy!
Good evening, all!
Just got back from a Rangers game. New York Rangers, that is. Hockey season already? Go figure.
I got a very last minute ticket and I've never been to a hockey game before, so what the heck. But I left after two periods. It was cold and I was a little tired. (And a little bored -- I couldn't get rid of the other ticket, so I went alone.)

I realize it -- I have the soundtrack.
And I've been using a version of it for the past 15-20 years or so, entitled "Happy Birthday, Leslie Jean". Sprung on my sister over the phone one year and she laughed hysterically (and so did her kids), so I did it again the following year.
Umpteen years later, she still laughs at it. (Funniest part is that *nobody* actually calls her "Leslie Jean", but it fit the tune.)

USAF Honor Guard doing outstanding and sacred work. About the time I think one of the services has topped them all in Honor Guard units, you guys feature another one.
No sour grapes here, this is what it’s all about, to honor those who gave all and what an honor.
And my thoughts go to:
CPL William (Billy) Long, KIA 17Jun2005 Iraq OIF lll 2/69 B-Co 3ID. I still wear your stainless KIA bracelet Billy, it never comes off. We are proud of your service and also of your service in the “Old Guard” at Arlington, Tomb of the Unknown. Your step-Dad is doing okay, rough at times but he’ll send a cheery email note and of course he’s in our prayers too and we thank God for your life although cut way too short but it is you who honor your fellow soldiers, us and this nation and those of us who understand will never forget.
