FOR THE RECORD [T]he House of Representatives approved a bill to allow offshore oil drilling, but nearly all the Republicans voted against it... It isnt a drilling bill, its an anti-drilling bill. If it becomes law, nearly all the oil and gas in the Outer Continental Shelf would be off-limits forever... This bill permanently bans all drilling within 50 miles of the US coast, which just happens to be where most of the recoverable oil and gas reserves are. It permits drilling between 50 and 100 miles out only if the adjoining states agree - which they wont, since the bill denies them any share in the royalties the oil companies would have to pay, thereby eliminating any financial incentive for a state to say yes. Virtually all the oil off the California coast and beneath the Eastern Gulf of Mexico would be locked up for good. Dont be fooled: The only offshore drilling this bill really opens the door to would have to be 100 miles or more out to sea, where the oil companies have no infrastructure... According to the Interior Department, the offshore areas where drilling is restricted contain more than 19 billion barrelsthats equal to 30 years of current imports from Saudi Arabia. The bill would deny Americans access to as much as nine-tenths of that oil. A good deal? I dont think so. Jeff Jacoby
Bush needs to Veto this as fast as it hits his desk. Call a press conference and tell the public that the democrats are determined to block our ability to access our own oil. He is vetoing the bill and demanding that they send him a bill that allows us to drill our own oil instead of sending the $$$ overseas.
Oil is up $25 per barrel today.
Locking out areas that we could drill in is not helping keep oil prices down.
Can you slant drill in the ocean?
While I agree that this crock of $#!^ should be vetoed the idea that any Congress can pass a law that is permanent is ludicrous. Even the Constituiton can be changed.
He MUST veto this bill and he MUST use the bully pulpit. McCain needs to sing out of the same song book.
Our notoriously anti-American Congress gets it, all right.
The ones who don’t get it are the American people who don’t vote the treasonous sobs out!

Months ago a lot of us said that, if Congress would just get off its lazy a$$ and simply announce that they were going to start drilling, the price of oil would fall. Lo and behold, Bush issues his Executive Order and the price of oil fell from $145+ to $90 in less than two months. Well, you dummies, it works in reverse, too. If you sit there with your thumb up your a$$ and announce that you will not allow drilling the OCS, ANWR, or all federal lands, the price is going to go up. Now, FOR ONCE, do what right for the country and forget your sorry self-interest and start drilling...NOW!!
This shouldn’t surprise anyone. The oil is between shore and 50 miles and the democrats know it. The big questions is.......who is getting payed off?
I wonder if oil will surge 25%
Someone needs to calm Jacoby down.
Nothing lasts forever ... not even Jeff Jacoby.

What a Crock of shi-. Drill where there no oil. They might as well outlawed drilling everywhere but the damn moon.
President Bush Veto this POS bill.
Let’s go find the Marianas trench and drill there!
Worried about CNLE stock and your hubby’s solar investments, Nan?

"I told you we owned her. You owe me a dollar."
“The Democrats still want to keep us dependent on foreign oil.”
They could be in the oil producers’ pocket.
Veto and vote out all who support this bill.
Why stop halfway?
This would be the headline, if the losers thought they could get away with it.
Anyone else get the sense that making offshore drilling more expensive is the next best thing to arbitrarily banning it?
Of course, losers. keep re-electing these total morons.
I can deal with the results better and longer that the typical idiot voter can.
Go for it, guys, re-elect these morons to office.
I think you refer to Barney Frank (D-MA) when you say “franks”. He is Chairman of the House Banking Committee, but he should be Chairman of the House Committee on Sodomy & AIDS.
Congress is getting more disgusting by the minute.

The Democrat "No Domestic Energy Policy!"
All of that puts the U.S. in a position that war for oil or
complete economic collapse will be our only choices.
You can't frustrate every source of domestic energy
without consequences. Our enemies will blackmail us
to the extent that we are vulnerable to blackmail.
The Democrats are leading us into a real war for oil.
A war we won't have the energy to fight. A war we don't need to fight because we have our own resources.
Yes I’m a cynic and the no drill energy policy coupled with the Wall Street mess appear to be calculated. I say this because (assumption) most of those complicitly involved are above average intellectually and well below average ethically. I can think of a number of reasons why someone would want the US of A to go away and what is happening now regarding our current disastrous leadership will most certainly lead to its’ demise. Might I add, with not a single shot fired.
What you may not yet realize is that he Democrat party has become the solely owned property of the extremist wing of the environmentalist lobby. The envirowhackos want $10 gas so that fossil fuel powered internal combustion and turbine engines will cease to be used for normal transportation and commerce, and electricty not produced by water, wind, or solar power will be outlawed. If they reach their ultimate goal our homes will be virtually unheated or air conditioned, our goods will be hauled by draft animals or wind powered watercraft, and we will ride bicycles or use some other non-motorized form of personal transportation to get to work, as if there would be any jobs in that kind of economy.
As insane as all that sounds, the whackos to whom so many Democrats owe their election success believe it would be highly desirable if it ended the practice of using fossil fuel energy just to make our our economy viable and our lives somewhat comfortable. Of course the Democrats aren't as stupid as they usually seem to be, and they will make sure to keep that illusory goal just out of reach of the whackos yet appearing to be attainable if the campaign money keeps flowing in.
Not a single shot fired ... yet. When people start getting hungry, shots WILL be fired.
I wonder why the Rats want to destroy the US? Who owns them, or are they just that stupid?
Well, I have read that the Chinese are doing it in the Florida Straits 50 miles from the keys in order to reach the oil on our side of the line between Cuba and our coast that was agreed upon before Castro's takeover. So I suppose the answer to your question is yes.
Of course American companies are forbidden to drill in that area, so I guess we may as well let the Chinese have it if it can't benefit us, thanks to a Reid-Pelosi run Congress.
Bush has never been especially fond of the veto pen. And as for the bully pulpit, he apparently had his vocal cords surgically removed at some point in the last year or so.
Perhaps the problem is, nobody listens:
http://gatewaypundit.blogspot.com/2008/09/bush-called-for-reform-of-fannie-mae.html

Contact your Congress critters to let them that you know the best oil is located in the first 50-mile range, shoreline to 50-mile point.
U. S. House of Representatives
And un-elect all the dimocrats who will not support drilling EVERYWHERE!
Communists need to be sent to the wall.
I guess I missed Bush’s calls for reforming Fannie and Freddie, or maybe the MSM in it’s infinite wisdom didn’t see fit to publicize the President of the United States’ calls for changes in the way those mismanaged enterprises were being run. After all, it’s much more important to keep the viewers and readers up to snuff on the goings on of Hollywierd celebrities and the latest news on the Kennedy clan.
We will hear NOTHING in the MSM about the Democrats pushing subprime loans and/or covering for Freddie/Fannie.
We’ll hear NOTHING about Bush or McCain calling for reform of Freddie/Fannie and the Democrats opposition to reform.
