Poll: Presidential race tightens in R.I.
Monday, Sep 22, 2008 - 10:09 AM
A new poll released Monday by Brown University shows Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama losing his lead in Rhode Island.
It appears that a number of Hillary Clinton's supporters are still angry that she isn't the Democratic nominee.
The most recent poll by the Taubman Center for Public Policy, taken last week, showed that if the election were held today, Obama would get 47 percent of the vote to John McCain's 34 percent. Nineteen percent said they were undecided.
In August, Obama was leading McCain by 20 percentage points, so he's dropped 7 points.
President George W. Bush's approval rating is at an all-time low in Rhode Island. He came in at 12 percent. Gov. Don Carcieri's approval rating was 39 percent.
The poll also showed that 70 percent of Rhode Islanders feel that the state is going in the wrong direction. It also found that 56 percent of Rhode Islanders support the raids being conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on illegal immigrants.
U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, who is up for re-election this year, topped federal office holders for approval ratings. Attorney General Patrick Lynch, a possible candidate for governor in 2010, topped the state's general officers in approval ratings.

What hurts more than anything, especially as a Catholic Deacon, is that my homestate is 60% Catholic. But when it comes right down to it... many of those are CINOs
For comparison, Kerry beat Bush 60% - 39% in RI in 2004.
If the valve on the back of my stove was that "tight", we'd all be dead from the gas leak.
Hillary won RI pretty handily. Same with Mass and NJ. I don’t think Catholics, even East Coast Catholics, like Obama that much.
Big problem for him. That is why his leads are modest in PA, CT, NY, NJ, Maine and now RI. Haven’t seen Mass yet.
Rhode Island is the most heavily Catholic state in the United States.
Looks pretty red to me. Commie Rodent rotten red.
In 1972 Rhode Island was McGovern’s second-best state...he came closer to winning there than in any other of the 49 states he lost. His home state of South Dakota was third, just barely.
