Pure panic. Many of the companies taking a big hit have nothing to do with the financial markets.
Like it or not, this will make it tough for McCain to get elected. People have already lost significant home equity and now their 401Ks are taking a bath. Right or wrong, the McCain campaign will suffer greatly from this meltdown.

It’s ok. You are just back to where you were in October 2005! Remember last October when it was over 14,000?

I sure would not want to be the winner of this election...because it means you wont be re-elected in 2012.
This is more than just bad real estate deals...
$800 billion dollar trade deficit (every economist who says “trade deficits are good” should be jailed...total stupididty)...thats money not circulating in America
Allowing Illegal aliens, H-1B visas...esp in a time of higher unemployment. Non-market lowering of wages
High business taxes...while giving subsidies and tax breaks for business who create jobs overseas.
And...add in all the taxpayer funded bailouts
It doesnt look good...

for those of us who are retired and depend on 401k or like investments to supplement our pensions (which don't receive COL adjustments) so as live comfortable lives, this is indeed a scary time. I'm riding it out for I do have confidence in the system although not necessarily the people manipulating the system.

Right or wrong, the McCain campaign will suffer greatly from this meltdown.
Why, though? That's conventional wisdom. If nothing else, this election cycle has been about the repeated, miserable failure of conventional wisdom. It could be argued that nervous voters will be afraid to entrust a rattled economy and a host of world problems to a newbie.
