Geraldo just reported on his show, that the Houston Channel, a major waterway and port facility, weathered Hurricane Ike suffering only minimal damage. this is very good news, and relates directly to how fast things can be returned to a new normal down there.

The news media is less than happy this thing didn’t live up to their hype, but they’re still covering as if it did.

The damage to the east of Galveston is beyond devestating for about 150 miles...just wait til the choppers get in the air...your mouths will drop.

Huh. I have family members in Houston and they still cannot get back into their homes. It is unclear if their homes are still standing.
But hey if Jerry says all is well............

One of the Broadcast channels here in DFW had a report this afternoon about how the winds at the surface were only in the 60s while at about 80 feet and above they were in the 120s. Thus the minimal damage at ground level mainly trees downing power-lines and small stuff thrown around while the highrise buildings were having 2 inch thick glass blown out. the same kind of thing happened there during Alesia (sp) when I was working there in ‘83.

Well, it’s not like he didn’t also report thatlarge parts of houston are flloded. But if shiping can move tthrough the channel, the flooded areas can get pumped out, and the economy will be able to recover at the same time as the city. instaed of having to repair the channel first, before the city can even be started on, and before ships can bring in their cargo.

Good to hear, hope they get it up and rnning soon. I looked at dozens of news photos of Galveston and other parts (of TX and LA) and a LOT of debris and ruined buildings. Hopefully it drains out quickly and power restored very soon. Water damage alone can be devastating.
