11 September 2008 Pristina _ There appears to be no respite in the high number of suicides in Kosovo, with 25 cases registered in the first six months of this year, the Kosovo Police says.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, the police said 25 people have committed suicide between January and July 2008, while another 105 people have attempted to take their life.

According to police statistics, most of the suicides happened in the Pristina region, while most of the victims are over 40 years old.

More than 400 suicides have been recorded in Kosovo between 2000 and 2007, of a population of 2 million.

This number has enormously increased since the 1998-1999 conflict.

Experts warn that economic stagnation is the source of most people’s depression.

According to the World Bank’s Poverty Assessment, some 35 percent of Kosovo’s population are “poor”, meaning they live on less than €1.42 per day.

Some 15 percent of the population live below the extreme poverty line of €0.93 per day.

If I calculated correctly, that's an annual rate of about one in 3,000 population. Is that really unusually high?

It would be interesting to know what percentage of the suiciders are Muslim. According to Islam, suicide is one of the worst sins one can commit.

But with GDP lower than most African countries, a place in the top five of most corrupt states and complete dependence on foreign aid, Kosovo’s President ‘Among Best Paid’. Meanwhile his own people are killing themselves.

Nice to see our tax dollars at work for "a good cause" that is so "humanitarian". /sarc off

Have a girl here in Sacramento who has put her virginity up for sale to the highest bidder to pay for grad school. With all that drug money running through Kosovo, I am sure that there are some who could meet her price!

Actually, it was his assesment of Biden that had me laughing hardest:

"Joe Biden is the archetypical Homo Beltveicus. He’d be Pol Pot’s running mate if that served Joe Biden’s quest for power, money, and then some more of the same. He proves that in Washington we have the best Congress and the worst hair pluggers money can buy."

McCain is a lot like Hillary, in the sense that you either love him or hate him, with not much in between.
