Liberal Bias in U.S. History Textbooks? (Fox News Article on FReeper book)
FoxNews.com ^ | September 11, 2008

Posted on 09/12/2008 6:25:41 AM PDT by rightwingintelligentsia

Think the history your kids are being taught in school is fair and balanced?

Think again says Larry Schweikart, University of Dayton professor and author of "48 Liberal Lies About American History (That You Probably Learned In School)."

Here are four examples from Schweikart's "worst offenders":

• "The American Pageant," by Bailey and David Kennedy

Schweikart's take:

"One of the most long-running and flawed, of these texts, esp. in the Reagan years. On p. 237, I actually have two charts, one from the book, and one reflecting the REAL data (i.e., "real" dollars as a share of GNP — which any responsible economist would have used. The visual difference is stunning."

The visual difference is stunning.

Too bad they didn't stun us by showing us the charts.

Excuse me. That should have been “stune,” not “stun.”

Sorry.

some public skools i’ve notices teach

“world history” as opposed to “american history”.

world history is usually taught from the 3rd world perspective, amplifying all the ideas of the left that we discuss here.

I’ve taught at a College for over 30 years and the students that our public schools turn out are pathetic. One third are functionally illiterate and most don’t know anything about American History. Forget about math or critical thinking. Its pretty scary.

Notwithstanding the books, the teachers are often worse. My daughter just dropped her first college history course and changed to a different class.

American History form the founding to 1877

Day one-According to the instructor, The founding fathers disappeared after the revolution and did nothing because “they sucked.”

Day two, Bush paid money to keep out of Vietnam.

She dumped this guy cause she was paying hundreds of dollars in her own money to learn history, not this guys preconceived idiocy.

I explained the reality of the founding fathers being kind of busy building a country and writing the US Constitution and the truth of Bus and Vietnam and his service in probably the most dangerous branch of the National Guard.

The new guy is far better.

It would be much, much more effective of we could make sense out of this. Where are thew charts, even at the link?

I'm conservative, teach college level history and use one of the cited books -- Nations of Nations by Davidson et. al. The two examples of this text's bias are accurate. But the text has numerous other non-idological qualities (too many to name here) that make it a preference text for a lot schools. Besides, I would think that a good history instructor would be able to explain revisionist and critical history and to use perceived bias as a "teachable moment." I am surprised that Zinn's A People's History of the United States is not on the list since a lot of high schools and colleges use this very biased book as a text.

i recently finished a degree and had all i could do to get through the general education credits. on top of having to read and supposedly learn from these liberal texts, this was a black college and i was subjected to this constant barrage of what the “evil whites” did to the minorities.

what amazed me is in one 20 page chapter on the civil war....only one sentence mentioned Lincoln. the rest were about the atrocities whites committed.

i dropped a world history class because the text treated christianity and judaism (and jews and christians) appallingly and cast doubt on any claims or beliefs of either.

Was reading this book yesterday...a must read for those like history and not PC history

Probably the one thing I learned from this book, that I had not heard before...was some of the things related to the Star Wars SDI program....that the Soviets were already planning high-tech missle defense (and why they failed)

Lies or nothing. My grandson took American history last year the ONLY time in his elementary school it will be taught and the teacher never mentioned Patrick Henry and briefly touched on Ben Franklin and Paul Revere. I can only assume the teacher are afraid to to teach about Patriots.

Former social studies editor here (K-12). Yep, our books were very biased, very PC. Although there were one or two conservatives in the SS department, the overall philosophy is very left-wing. Still, what you see in the books is the edited version - you should see some of the diatribes we received from our authors - liberals all, and influential in the educational community. But the real problem lies in the state adoption committees who create the guidelines for the books. If a book doesn’t comply, it can’t be sold in that particular adoption state. It’s entrenched and would require a large and massive effort to reform.

Old news to veteran educators (like me with almost 20 years in the class room). You should see the Economics text I have to teach from. Especially the entire chapter on The Federal Reserve. Total pack of lies. But the books are adopted by the state and a list is offered to each county who gets to choose which pack of lies to spew. I don't get it, how this process can be so corrupt in a fairly conservative state like FLORIDA (where I am) controlled by the Republicans! I think they all had the same crappola shoved at them in high school and just go with the flow. My wife just retired from teaching after 35 years of service. I can't wait till I can retire. We're planning on ME taking early retirement if we can work the finances correctly within five years at the outside. I can't wait. If certain other irons of mine in the fire work out, I may leave even earlier!

Actually, I found Nation of Nations pretty horrible. I give far more examples in the book from NofN than the two I mentioned.

And I've met few instructors who like to "teach against the book." It's hard enough to teach WITH a book, using it for reinforcement. The classes that do use Zinn tend to also use our book, "A Patriot's History of the United States," which doesn't have the touchy-feely visuals and CD-roms that NofN has, but which is far superior in every other way.

Yeah, you know where I learned that? Back in 1984, a poly sci prof and I wrote a history of the Trident Sub program, and in the course of that research we found all this stuff about Soviet laser/particle beam weapons tests . . . in the 1970s!!! They just didn’t have the money or the skill to make it a reality.

Nooooo. Liberals can’t be biased. If they lie, it was a “simple mistake” (repeated in 20 other textbooks, AFTER “fact checking”). Only conservatives can be biased.
