Krista Flint, executive director of the Canadian Down Syndrome Society, said, "Many of the country's medical professionals only give messages of fear to parents who learn their baby will be born with the genetic condition."
"It's very dark," she said in the Globe and Mail report. "They hear a lot about the medical conditions that are sometimes associated with Down syndrome. They hear about the burden . . . it places on children and a marriage."
"They hear about things like shortened life expectancy. They hear a lot about the challenges of a life with Down syndrome. That's why Mrs. Palin has become an example that could possibly stem the tide of families who abort fetuses after a positive determination for Down syndrome," Ms. Flint said.
"We know overwhelmingly the message families get is 'Don't have this baby, it will ruin your life,' and I don't think people would look at Sarah Palin and see a ruined life," Ms. Flint said. "Regardless of politics, I think it's a good example."
According to Physicians for Life between 84 percent and 91 percent of babies with Down syndrome are aborted in the U.S. While this figure is similar in Canada, it is even higher in England and Spain where 94 percent and 95 percent of unborn babies with Down syndrome are aborted.

Unbelievable.
My business partner was faced with this when his wife was pregnant with their second child. The ob insisted that they abort the child because he was positive that the tests were showing Downs Syndrome. My partner, an engineer, looked at the data and told the doctor he was misinterpreting it, but the ob insisted vehemently that they abort the fetus.
Their second child is now a healthy, thriving 10 y.o. The doc was wrong.
Hitler desensitized the Germans to the coming holocaust by first getting them to accept euthanizing people with disabilities. They were, after all, not normal and were a drain on German society.
That’s a frightening story!
And what would be wrong with that?
Culture of death
Not accurate. The real story is much scarier.
The euthanizing of retarded and disabled people actually started well before Hitler came to power, under the entirely democratic Weimar Republic and was promoted by the doctors and their associations.
At the time eugenics was a cause almost everybody favored. Nothing particularly fascist about it. It is only in retrospect that it became associated with Nazism and the Holocaust.
Socialized medicine is what is behind the high numbers in Canada, England and Spain. The gubment is deciding and making the choice more than the woman.
That is what Obamessiah wants for America. The gubment dictating abortions.
We told the doc that since we would keep OUR CHILD no matter what, there was no point in testing for Downs.
My daughter's middle name was inspired by a 3rd cousin Down syndrome child who was beloved by her family; she died at age 2. I never got to meet her, but did see her picture. She was a beautiful little girl.
The book is still in print, I read it years ago, and amazon has it, 5 stars:
A brief story of a child with Downs Syndrome, born to Dale Evans & Roy Rogers
nothing personal but you cherry picked the excerpt
the first part jibes better with the title.
i heard some Malik woman in Canada today saying the most vile stuff about Palin
Plain brings out hateful women
and good ones too
Too bad a bizarre sub-human like Illinois State Senator Obama sought to have them brutally murdered, even if born live and viable after an "unsuccessful" abortion attempt.
We said exactly the same thing to our OB who is pro-life himself anyhow.
My wife had three babies after 35 including the last at 43.
I had my Rosary in my pocket so that I could refrain from strangling some of these "doctors".
She is perfect with huge blue eyes and a bubbly love of life. I do not know how we could have done without her.
vaudine
The arrogance of her and her husband raising an imperfect child!! Pleas note the thick sarcasm.
What these idiot doctors forget is that none of us are perfect and are all diseased in someway that will show over time. Idiots each and every one of them to infer that a Down’s child is not a blessing to the parents.
They need to meet my cousin. His infectous laughter and smile would change their minds in two seconds...hold it...no it wouldn’t, but I’d have a good time watching them squirm to see a Down’s human being who is happy and lives on his own (under supervision at a group home) AND has held several parttime jobs at various restaurants, etc.
About 40% of kids with Down Syndrome are born with a specific type of heart defect. It isn't the easiest surgery, but is quite common in the U.S.
I'm wouldn't be surprised if it is difficult to get the surgery in Canada.
My daughter was told regarding her 7 month pregnancy that “it would be more trouble than it was worth. You need to just get rid of this and try again later.” Then 1 1/2 months later a perfect little boy was born with no medical issues whatsoever.
Pigs!!!
How sad that our society has become so numb that a person can say these words without shame. There is a cleansing of epic proportions on the way.
There are no guarantees in life, are there? One who starts off “perfect, normal, average” my have a curve thrown into their life at any point. I so love this description of “normal”....

I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability - to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It’s like this......
When you’re going to have a baby, it’s like planning a fabulous vacation trip - to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It’s all very exciting.
After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, “Welcome to Holland.”
“Holland?!?” you say. “What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I’m supposed to be in Italy. All my life I’ve dreamed of going to Italy.”
But there’s been a change in the flight plan. They’ve landed in Holland and there you must stay.
The important thing is that they haven’t taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It’s just a different place.
So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.
It’s just a different place. It’s slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you’ve been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around.... and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills....and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.
But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy... and they’re all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say “Yes, that’s where I was supposed to go. That’s what I had planned.”
And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away... because the loss of that dream is a very very significant loss.
But... if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things ... about Holland.
grandma mac
Indeed. We need to return to the basics.
