Beating up on Palin Is a Lose Lose for Obama
The American Chronicle ^ | September 09, 2008 | Earl Ofari Hutchinson

Posted on 09/09/2008 5:43:14 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama should do two things about GOP vice presidential pick Sarah Palin. The first is repeat: "I´m running against John McCain and I´m running for president not Vice President." He should keep repeating that as many times as it takes to get him to back off the distracting, pointless, and self-absorbing amount of time he´s spent knocking her. The strength of his appeal and campaign has always been that he´s taken the political and ethical high ground. He´s stuck to talking about the issues of tax cuts, the Iraq War, the economic meltdown, health care, the housing foreclosure scandal. He´s resisted the mighty temptation to take personal slaps at McCain and even Bush. At no point has he stooped to low brow non-issue character assassination.

That changed when he shouted to a crowd in Flint, Michigan, "I mean, you can't just make stuff up. You can't just re-create yourself. You can't just reinvent yourself." He bit hard on the Palin bait and that´s a bad thing. A candidate who spends inordinate time and energy trying to tar their opponent runs the same risk as an attorney or a prosecutor in a courtroom. They avoid at all costs being seen as too overly aggressive with a witness. It´s called witness badgering and that´s even more dangerous when the witness is a middle or working class mother. Bullying her can stir juror sympathy, even anger toward the attorney or the prosecutor, and it could cost them their case.

Palin is more than a GOP rival. To many she´s the epitome of the struggling American mother. Millions of working class mothers will identify with her no matter what their views on abortion, creationism, or her experience or lack thereof. In other words, the bogeyman Obama creates in Palin could be someone else´s bigger than life hero. One that´s not easily deconstructed later. That´s already happened. Packs of Hillary female supporters have expressed outrage at the Palin attacks. And polls show that more white women are shifting to McCain. A big reason: The loony Hate Palin attacks.

The second thing Obama should do is to resend the message that he apparently sent in the first hours after McCain announced he´d picked Palin. When a top Team Obama member hammered Palin, Obama did the smart thing and simply congratulated her and then went back to talking about the issues. He´s forgotten that and that´s sent the subtle message that it´s OK to fan every silly, unsubstantiated, salacious rumor mongering slander and slur that can be conjured up. With some of this stuff you don´t know whether to howl with laughter or scream in disgust that presumably intelligent adults not only dignify but actually believe it. A website that exclusively lists and debunks Palin rumors http://explorations.chasrmartin.com/2008/09/06/palin-rumors as of September 6 listed seventy-one Palin falsehoods. It warned that the number continues to grow exponentially by the hour.

Here are some of the juicier Palin gems. Her Down Syndrome son is the result of incest between Hubby Todd and their daughter Bristol. Palin called Obama Sambo and Hillary Clinton the "B word." She had an illegitimate child by an African-American. She´s an avid porn watcher. She had an affair with her husbands´ business partner. Two of her daughters, Willow and Piper, are named after witches on TV. Her son Track who is leaving for Iraq joined the National Guard because he´s a drug addict. Then there is the list of the by now Palin anti´s. She´s anti-black, Mormon, Semitic, American Indian, Catholic, Muslim, teaching evolution, funding special needs, and animal rights. The two jewels in the anti-Palin crown is that any book that doesn´t conform to her alleged crackpot, fringe beliefs will be tossed in a roaring Nazi style public bonfire. The other Palin gem is that God willed the Iraq War.

In sane political times anyone even slightly past the age of reason wouldn´t give this stuff a second´s notice. It would be laughed away if it appeared on even the most extreme fringe websites. But these aren´t sane political times. These are times when even the silliest, most outrageous, even grotesque gossip can quickly take on a life of its own.

In the days ahead it´s almost certain that the cottage industry in Palin rumor mongering will grow even bigger and even more outlandish. This will stir even more disgust and anger among many of those who may not have an ounce of sympathy for Palin and the GOP. That in turn will put big smiles on Team McCain. Shrill and vile Palin hits deflect hits on McCain on the issues. They will give credence to the McCain camp´s contention that Obama is desperate and will latch onto anything to smear an opponent. They will give even more credence to McCain´s rail that the media is a big bad, sexist bully that delights in beating up on a poor, defenseless, mother and woman who just happens to be a presidential ticket candidate. Beating up on Palin is a lose lose for Obama.

that they are destroying Obama/Biden, not McCain/Palin!

They are self destructing right in front of our eyes, people, hopefully, will see this and realize that if this guy can't take even the slightest pressure he'll fold into a ball and hide under his bed the first time he has to deal with Iran, or Russia or China or Syria or ...

People need to wake up!

His handling of the Sarah Palin nomination and Sarah Palin as a VP candidate is EXACTLY why he CANNOT be elected President. Not because he's being rude and disrespectful to a capable and experienced lady, although that is offensive enough.

No, Mr. Obama has bitten hard on the Palin nomination tactic, and displayed an unprecedented FAILURE to think tactically and strategically to outflank the move. He keeps digging himself further and further into the trap, and cannot extricate himself.

In short, you've been outplayed, Mr. Obama.

And if you can outplayed in a Presidential election, God (or Allah) help you when you're sitting across the table from Vladimir Putin!!!!

Obama is the sub commander who fires a torpedo at his own sub, every time he makes these dirty remarks towards Palin.

She’s more experienced, more qualified, nicer and has more class.

Obama’s like the “big man on campus” high schooler who graduated and can’t figure out why the rest of the world doesn’t fall at his feet. His 15 minutes dragged on for an hour. Time to switch the channel from this Jerry-Springer-act called Obama.

Obama didn't get the message. After the "pig" insult tonight, its over. What people saw is someone who isn't courteous to his political opponents. Its ok to attack them on the issues but this was plain hitting below the belt. That was the behavior of a street thug, not of a future President Of The United States. And we should NOT tolerate it!

Palin called . . . Hillary Clinton the "B word."

75% of Americans have done this, including no doubt many of her "friends". NOT calling Hillary a "B word" would be abnormal.

any book that doesn´t conform to her alleged crackpot, fringe beliefs will be tossed in a roaring Nazi style public bonfire.

I wouldn't object to this as long as we limit it to anything by Karl Marx, Arianna Huffington, Jonathan Alter, George Stephanopolous, James Carville, Bill or Hillary Clinton, Obama, Saul Alinsky, Herbert Marcuse, and about two dozen other lefties I could name.

Obama has never encountered this situation in any of his previous campaigns, actually having formidable Republican opposition. By going negative, he has given up the one thing that has gotten him to where he is, the ability to be inspirational across traditional party lines, I remember how many Republicans back in 2004 were impressed with Obama’s ability to reach across party lines. His recent performances on the campaign trail have made all of that but a faded memory.

He has continued to “preach to the choir” even after the Convention, while McCain/Palin have reached out to the undecideds.

Note to budding political cartoonists:

Draw a picture of Obama grimacing with a giant lipstick protruding from his backside.

Show Biden saying “I think you are supposed to use it on the other end.”

I am waiting for the Second Stage- when the frantic left realizes that they have enhanced the McCain candidacy, maybe inevitablized it by their ludicrous attacks. Then they will accuse right-wing and nefarious Christian trolls of making the attacks to look like they come from the Obamanation organization. It is merely another step in the leftist descent into ludicrosity.

Hussein’s personal biggest error is in running now against Palin instead of McCain. His people, and now even he, himself are throwing mud fast and furiously that is mostly soiling the throwers and McCain is staying blissfully clean. He can trvel about making his campaign appearances and gaining voters without the Obamanites even paying attention.

Prehaps because of his upbringing, he has big issues with women, and you are right that he seems unable to control them.

Viewed in this light, the pick of Sarah Palin seems quite strategic on McCain's part.

I may have underestimated McCain.

What has become glaringly obvious here is that Liberals and the left in general, including the 200 IQ left, really believe that intelligent Christians and middle Americans, those with 70+ IQ say they believe all that “conservative” stuff solely as a political tactic- to aggravate the Liberals. The other Conservatives and non coastal-elites are barely functional retards.

What kills me is that the author of the article is exactly right....the way to deal with this was to IGNORE Sarah.....but , nooooooooooooo. Mr. Obama had to run headlong directly at her to destroy her, and ultimately destroys himself in the process.

His STRATEGIC BLUNDER is proof Obama does not have the background or experience to be President.

I'm reminded of the scene in the movie "The Right Stuff" where Annie Glenn refuses to let Johnson into her house, and Johnson throws a fit saying "Can't we find anyone that can control a housewife?"

I was watching Greta this evening.

She was hosting the show from Alaska.

One of her first questions to Carl Rove was, "Was I the only one to hear Obama'a comment about lipstick on a pig, and think he was directing it at her?"

With each attack on Sarah he puts another vote on the McCain/Palin ticket.

Obama can make one of two mistakes in the next two months. One is to attack Sarah Palin, the other is not attack Sarah Palin. He has no good options. He can only take the option that causes the least damage to his campaign.
