ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (Reuters) – Republican nominee John McCain said in an interview aired on Sunday he would bring Democrats into his Cabinet and administration as part of his attempt to change the political atmosphere in Washington.

"I don't know how many, but I can tell you, with all due respect to previous administrations, it is not going to be a single, 'Well, we have a Democrat now,"' McCain said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

"It's going to be the best people in America, the smartest people in America," he said in an interview taped on Saturday.

Both McCain and Barack Obama, his Democratic rival in the November 4 presidential election, are claiming to be the agent of change needed to fix problems in Washington.

This is no surprise. Everyone knows that Lieberman has a guaranteed cabinet seat (probably Secretary of State).

It is going to be a long 4 years. At least his Palin pick gives me some hope.

Oh yeah, I would also put Teddy at the ATF. He would be in charge of the Alcohol section.

Exactly. Or he is trying to enlist some democrats away from Obami.

We all know McCain is going to say things like this so we shouldn't be surprised by this or other things that will aggravate the base. McCain, just keep Palin on the ticket and back her aggressively and you have my vote.

David Brooks has pointed out that after eight years of coming and goings in the Bush White House, there aren’t an abundance of Republicans waiting in the wings to work in a McCain administration. The reality is, staffing Dems and Independents may be more than a political maneuver, it may be a necessity.

It depends on who the Democrats are and where McCain puts them. Lieberman would be a decent Secretary of State or Defense. (And the governor of Connecticut is a Republican.)

“It's going to be the best people in America, the smartest people in America,”

Well, the Democrat pool to draw from will be very small, and within a short time he will find them working behind the scenes to weaken his administration. They will be leaking important info to the MSM and do the nation a disservice. He needs to get the best and smartest OK, but be very, very wary of any current Democrat in Congress or the WDC bureaucracies. You betcha!!!

This is nothing to even talk about now, let’s get him elected first! Competent qualified Dems should have a role in the Cabinet if they are the best choice. Nothing wrong with meritocracy as long as the right team is in charge.

Agreed. And an added benefit of having, e.g., Lieberman in some cabinet position is that it will drive Reid and Pelosi right over the edge. I like Zell Miller, too.

The post-partisan thing worked well for W, now, didn’t it?

And the “smartest people in America” on the cabinet was tried first by A. Lincoln a while back, just before the War Between the States.

But, will his cabinet “look like America?”

Which democrats? Which cabinet positions? What will be the balance of power in the House and Senate? And what will McCain’s policies actually be? Without answers to those questions, McCain’s statement doesn’t mean much.

Zell Miller - Secretary of Defense?

How about this thought - are there any moderate Democrat senators from red states that have Republican governors? Put 'em in the cabinet and have the governor appoint a REPUBLICAN in their place! heh heh ....

Yes, it's certainly scary, but if he does it right, it could work. Lieberman would have been a bloody disaster as V.P., but he could be good in some sort of job. Sarah Palin should be put in charge of achieving energy independence. And maybe there are other Democrats who could be fit into particular jobs.

It hasn't always worked well in the past, but it really would depends who he picks and where he puts them.

Although I took the bait and posted on this thread ... I think it better now to simply not count our chickens and focus on keeping BHO out of the white house.

Although the last week or so has been exhilierating I’m a little worried about peaking too early. We have to keep fighting until BHO is defeated.
