ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (Reuters) Republican nominee John McCain said in an interview aired on Sunday he would bring Democrats into his Cabinet and administration as part of his attempt to change the political atmosphere in Washington.
"I don't know how many, but I can tell you, with all due respect to previous administrations, it is not going to be a single, 'Well, we have a Democrat now,"' McCain said on CBS' "Face the Nation."
"It's going to be the best people in America, the smartest people in America," he said in an interview taped on Saturday.
Both McCain and Barack Obama, his Democratic rival in the November 4 presidential election, are claiming to be the agent of change needed to fix problems in Washington.

Well of course he will.....
Lieberman....heeeelllooooo
Senator McCain, ask aRnold how that post-partisan thingy has worked... or did he get it from you?
Damn...Now I’m suffering from post-partisan depression...
This may be much ado about nothing. Probably trying to get the independents.
Zell Miller would be good for some post.
Don’t screw it up, Senator.
It is going to be a long 4 years. At least his Palin pick gives me some hope.
Doesn't that eliminate ALL the 'rats?
He’ll bring in Lieberman and confine him to a defense of American and Israel portfolio if he’s smart, and I’m beginning to think that he’s smarter than I thought.
Lieberman and Zell Miller would be two of my picks.
Oh yeah, I would also put Teddy at the ATF. He would be in charge of the Alcohol section.
W had hopes of creating a less hostile environment in DC when he first showed up. Good Luck wid dat.
Exactly. Or he is trying to enlist some democrats away from Obami.
We all know McCain is going to say things like this so we shouldn't be surprised by this or other things that will aggravate the base. McCain, just keep Palin on the ticket and back her aggressively and you have my vote.
Lieberman would make a great Secretary of State.
Also I don’t really care who runs Commerce since it runs on auto-pilot anyway.
David Brooks has pointed out that after eight years of coming and goings in the Bush White House, there aren’t an abundance of Republicans waiting in the wings to work in a McCain administration. The reality is, staffing Dems and Independents may be more than a political maneuver, it may be a necessity.

Depends on the democrat and the position I ain’t got a problem with it.
It depends on who the Democrats are and where McCain puts them. Lieberman would be a decent Secretary of State or Defense. (And the governor of Connecticut is a Republican.)
Well, the Democrat pool to draw from will be very small, and within a short time he will find them working behind the scenes to weaken his administration. They will be leaking important info to the MSM and do the nation a disservice. He needs to get the best and smartest OK, but be very, very wary of any current Democrat in Congress or the WDC bureaucracies. You betcha!!!
Zell wouldn't be bad.
This is nothing to even talk about now, let’s get him elected first! Competent qualified Dems should have a role in the Cabinet if they are the best choice. Nothing wrong with meritocracy as long as the right team is in charge.
Agreed. And an added benefit of having, e.g., Lieberman in some cabinet position is that it will drive Reid and Pelosi right over the edge. I like Zell Miller, too.
they may change their mind for the opportunity to work alongside Sarah.

“Oh yeah, I would also put Teddy at the ATF. He would be in charge of the Alcohol section.”
Wasn’t the Kennedy fortune originally derived from trafficing in, then illegal, alcoholic beverages?
The post-partisan thing worked well for W, now, didn’t it?
And the “smartest people in America” on the cabinet was tried first by A. Lincoln a while back, just before the War Between the States.
But, will his cabinet “look like America?”
Confidential to John: stop and take a look at where you are right now as opposed to two weeks ago. Do I have to spell it out for you?
There ARE some good Democrats. Lieberman and Miller have been mentioned, there are also people like former Senator Sam Nunn . . .back from the days of the “Scoop Jackson Democrats”. . .
Which democrats? Which cabinet positions? What will be the balance of power in the House and Senate? And what will McCain’s policies actually be? Without answers to those questions, McCain’s statement doesn’t mean much.
Joe Kennedy made his fortune smuggling booze (rum running) into the country during the prohibition days, so I understand.
Zell Miller - Secretary of Defense?
How about this thought - are there any moderate Democrat senators from red states that have Republican governors? Put 'em in the cabinet and have the governor appoint a REPUBLICAN in their place! heh heh ....
reid, pelosi and especially the moveon.org crowd which hates Jews.
yawn, Dude what’s with barf alert. Every administration has one or two of the opposition. why pretend like this is something new.
I wonder how many dem senators w/ Republican Governors could be tapped.
Lieberman is the first one. Time to find some others.
“It’s going to be the best people in America, the smartest people in America,” he said
That automaticaly eliminates Democrats.
This isn't Bush. This is John McCain. Knowing him, he'll likely appoint Barbara Boxer to be Secretary of Defense.
Appoint Teddy to Education. Two days later get rid of the department.
reagan was a democrat...
McCain says he will include Democrats in Cabinet
That was Bush’s first big mistake.
John take a lesson from your predecessor, dump the dems.
Yeah, I'll feel so much better with Diane Feinstein, Barbara Boxer, Bernie Sanders and Pat Leahy running the President's cabinet, since they're from states with Republican governors.
yeah--even Clinton had William Cohen as his Secretary of Defense...
Yes, it's certainly scary, but if he does it right, it could work. Lieberman would have been a bloody disaster as V.P., but he could be good in some sort of job. Sarah Palin should be put in charge of achieving energy independence. And maybe there are other Democrats who could be fit into particular jobs.
It hasn't always worked well in the past, but it really would depends who he picks and where he puts them.
Although I took the bait and posted on this thread ... I think it better now to simply not count our chickens and focus on keeping BHO out of the white house.
Although the last week or so has been exhilierating I’m a little worried about peaking too early. We have to keep fighting until BHO is defeated.
(St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle ....)
no they were not the ones I was thinking about
He did pick Palin and did back the surge when it wasn't politically expedient to do. So, who knows? McCain is McCain.
Although the last week or so has been exhilarating Im a little worried about peaking too early. We have to keep fighting until BHO is defeated.

Amen!
