McCain Pledges to appoint Democrats to Cabinet

Republican John McCain pledged if elected president to appoint Democrats to his Cabinet, saying there's nothing partisan about tackling the nation's toughest problems.

"I don't know how many, but I can tell you, with all due respect to previous administrations, it is not going to be a single ... 'Well we have a Democrat now.' It's going to be the best people in America," the GOP presidential nominee told CBS' "Face the Nation," in an interview taped Saturday that will be broadcast in full Sunday.

"So many of these problems we face _ for example, energy independence, what's partisan about that?" he said. "And I'll tell you, some of them, I'll ask to work for a dollar a year."

McCain's comments come after he was believed to have closely considered Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, a former Democrat turned independent, as a possible running mate before ultimately choosing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a Republican.

Well, this just keeps getting better and better. Maybe he'll appoint Obama to something so as to "reach across the isle".

Palin will make no difference in this administration. Her advice will be ignored by the old man.

McCain is a conservative how????

Every President does this. And Sarah Palin will be the most influential VP since Dick Cheney. And this is no time to be putting out bad vibes.

With Palin sitting next to him, McNutjob will have to be VERY careful. Besides SOME dems - like Liebermann - would be good in the right spopt - like Secretary of State or Defense or Ambassador to the U.N.

AND if McNutjob can’t finish his term - Palin will make a GREAT President.

This is a political bone. Like when Clinton appointed Senator Cohen. It is a mile wide statement and an inch deep.

Besides there are some capable Democrats and there are some jobs that don’t have a Rat philosophy as being a threat. As long as their general philosophy agrees with the old man, they can have a job somewhere.

Frankly, it probably means Joe Lieberman gets a reward for standing by his friend at the Republican convention. It’s the last job he’ll probably get.

You see, I read this and my first thoughts were Zell Miller for Secretary of State and Joe Lieberman (ok, he's an "Independent Dem", not a "Dem") for Secretary of Defense.

Strictly as a political statement this stinks. All it accomplishes is to cheese off conservatives and Republicans and does little or nothing to win crossover votes. We want nothing but topnotch conservative appointees.

Maybe this is a sop to the Democrat controlled Senate that will be confirming these appointees.

Yes, it’s reaching out to independent and Dem voters who McCain needs to win. But naah, let’s just give up and
try to reach only those on the Right. And Michelle will
be by her husband’s side as he takes the oath of office.
That’ll be better, eh? (Even though we probably are a
center-right country, we need to reach some on the center-left
too)

W appointed Rats. Clinton appointed a RINO. Nothing new here. Folks expect Lieberman might be tapped for a Cabinet post in a McCain administration.

Frankly, so long as they are capable and remember their loyalty to this Country and their boss, the President, I don't care what party a Cabinet officer came from.

I think that Lieberman might be a good pick for Foggy Bottom. Hell, on the important foreign policy issues (Israel, middle east, etc), he is right on. It will also keep him outta domestic policy for years, and be a sop to the Democrats.

Plus, there are about 15 worthless “cabinet” posts that could be given to dems that have no power at all.

People should relax. He is going to make Liberman Secretary of State or something. I dont agree with him on domestic politics but he has been stronger than many republicans on foreign policy.

McCain trying to lock in the independent vote and maybe pull along some MOR Dems. Probably a smart thing for him to signal at this point.

But look which priority he put first. “Energy Independence”. We have been hearing this a lot these last couple of days. This angle must be playing well, as well it should. Less dependence on foreign energy sources is key to our economic security as well as national security. Another advantage Palin brings to the ticket.

And as it turns out, the energy independence argument is his best line of defense against Dems who blame the Republicans for the economic problems.

By putting America first and party politics second?

Whether you like it or not, more Americans are Democrat than Republican.

The current far-Left Democrat Party is leaving millions of American Democrats to the right of them and you see no value in welcoming those Reagan Democrats to our side. All you seem to care about is whether or not an American has a (D) or an (R) after their name.

“Well, he owes Leiberman... If he means putting Ted Kennedy on the bench - that’s different.”

Why? Because he made a speech at the convention? Because he “supports” our war against global terrorism?

Every American should support our war against terrorism, so Joe should get a special dispensation for doing what any American politician should be doing?

If there are loyal conservatives/republicans who are vastly more qualified for cabinet positions, why would you put in a psudo-dem. Plus you would take away an (I) from Conn. and the libs in Conn. would just appoint another (D) for the Senate.

Unfreakingbelievable - just when he has his party reved up and ready to vote for him - he opens his stupid mouth and puts his foot in it.

Note for McLame: Dont talk about how you love democrats more than conservatives. Dont talk about how you hate the hard working American and love the Mexican Illegal Alien. Dont talk about how you sat on your hands and said nothing when you voted in the affirmative for the most liberal SCOTUS Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

This is McLames election to lose - and Ill be damned if he hasnt started to lose it.

One more question, how often to dems state they will put Republicans on thier cabnet?

The enemy is within, liberals pose more of a threat to America than AlQueda.

Right now, and for the next two months, the negativity must end. An Obama presidency must be prevented. There will be plenty of time after that to complain about McCain's policies. In fact, I look forward with enthusiasm to spending the next four years complaining about the McCain administration. But not now.

Frankly, I do see the “value” in this statement.... for me it is more about effectiveness/conservatism rather than about “D” or “R” -— there are many “D’s” out there that are more conservative than some of our “R’s” -— I have always said that we need our party to welcome the Reagan Democrats into the fold while at the same time keeping our agenda as far to the right as possible without losing too many in the middle...

Bush had democrats around. Greenspan is a Democrat. His wife trashes Sarah Palin daily! Bush kept Norman Mineta, a clinton cabinet member and who is an outstanding person, in his cabinet.

Although not in the cabinet, the Director of the FBI is a Democrat, who had Barbara Boxer at his swearing in as a US Attorney! Didn’t know that did ya?

You know Joe Lieberman is gonna be in there. But, like Bush, McCain will find it hard for Democrats to be in his cabinet. Bush asked many good Dems to help him. But, they really are not interested in bi-partisanship. They want total power. So, the party really doesn’t let their guys serve in a republican administration. They have already said that Lieberman is gonna pay for giving the speech at the RNC.

“Palin will make no difference in this administration. Her advice will be ignored by the old man.”

I have NO problem with the placement of a couple of dems in the cabinet, if they are people Pres. McCain trusts and is comfortable with. It will be HIS cabinet after all, and it would set no precedent if he did so.

As for Sarah just sitting idly by, watching McCain go against the principles that made HER who she is...... I doubt it. She is not a ‘politics as usual’ type person. She won the respect of over 80% of the population in Alaska because she was a true reformer and whistle blower. If she felt McCain wasn’t acting in good faith, I don’t expect she go quietly along with him. Pitbull in lipstick stuff and all that.

But, we’ll just have to get the pair of them installed in office, and SEE what goes on. I have no blind expectations that McCain is gonna do everything I like or want him to do. I expect to be furiously angry at him half the time. But then, I’d be angry at Obama ALL the time.... so there it is.

But just think, if Sarah Palin stays true to herself, and I don’t see why she won’t, in 2012 or 2016 we may, God willing, be looking forward to the beginning of the “Palin Years’.

cheers, pattyjo
