Why English is the Language of Chinese Prostitutes

"Quite a few of your English students are prostitutes," a friend told me today as she recounted a conversation that she had with her hair stylist recently. "The guy who cut my hair told me that many of your training center's female students come to him two or three times a week to get their hair done before they go to work." She went on to explain that according to the hair stylist, some of my students sell their bodies at night in local hotels where there might be as many as 200 prostitutes gathered in one establishment. Other students work as "high class" prostitutes providing sexual services to just one or two likely married men in exchange for a place to live and a monthly stipend.

Yes, in China, the prostitutes I have encountered know English, but it isn't very good English. It doesn't have to be. It's more like, "Hey! F***! 100 Yuen!" How much more do they need to know?

P.S. No, I have not used their services. They come after people on the street, and are not subtle.

I hope you don’t get any ideas about adjusting your “fees”.

I’ve heard some of those stories. I’ve heard how some reach right down to certain parts of the body, which immediately gets a man’s attention.

I was shocked by the number of our Engineers sent to China for assignments running for 1 to 6 months — who ended up marrying their “girl friends”....

The working girls must be targeting foreigners - especially Americans - to get them out of China and to the world they see only on television and the movies..

English is the international language of business. Even when it comes to the seediest of all business.

I’ve heard stories about Karaoke TV (KTV) girls. Modern day geishas, more or less.

The same thing happens on nearly every overseas US military base. As we used to say, they are looking for the land of the “Great PX.”

Beat me to it. Back when I was an engineering faculty member there was a running joke that the international language of science is broken English.

Are these marriages generally successful?

Or is it difficult to predict?

NCIS did an episode about this a while back:

Some are successful, many are not. I have know quiet a few guy that married Korean girls. They all ended in divorce after they get a permanent green card of citizenship.

On a serious note China will soon be the largest English speaking nation on the planet.

That's really sad.

Were they good husbands, or were they jerks?

Some where jerks, mostly they were young and had no clue what they were getting into. Some were just plain taken advantage of.

Marriages to foreigners are very difficult. One of the biggest things your spouse will have to deal with is the isolation. They will know no one in their new home. They have little money and no social safety net if things go bad. They often there speak English but are not aware of the pop culture references in day to day life. They know the words but not the meaning.

My wife is chinese. She speaks passable english and has an average job. She is so great, she cooks and cleans and well you know what else and doesn’t talk much. She never asks about my feelings, and i can play as much golf and watch footballs games and drink beer and she just brings more. I am the luckiest guy in the world.

Could your wife say that she’s the luckiest gal in the world?

"Modern day geishas, more or less."

You couldn't be more wrong...

True professional "geishas" are women who have undergone extensive training over years and decades. They are HIGHLY compensated to provide CLASSICALLY costumed and made up attractive, talented music, dance, poetry, conversation and beauty to any number of gentlemen gathered for dinner...

One can tell the level of respect or appreciation a Japanese host is showing his guests - by the ration of Geisha to Guests he has ordered.... The higher the ration, the more the business relationship means to the host - is the way I've had it explained to me.

A Senior Geisha - one who is at least 40 to 50 years old will mesmerize the average America.... The grace of movement while simply pouring a drink, passing a dish or rising from a kneeling position and walking across the room is a sight that must be seen to be appreciated.... They are art in motion.....gliding like a cat and in a costume that takes one back a thousand years..... They are beautiful to behold -- beyond description...

True - some are kept women by a specific "benefactor" -- but they are on a far higher plain and league than karaoke or bar girls who are little more than fungible whores and present throughout the far East....

The ONLY way most Westerners ever get an opportunity to be in the presence of a truly professional Geisha in a locale like Kyoto's Gion is to be taken there by a member of a private club or be taken to a very exclusive restaurant a heavy hitter Japanese host --- because most Westerners would never dream of entering due to the cost....

That’s great. I have a Chinese fiancee soon to be wife. I would never have tried this when I was young. I would have botched everything.

I met her totally by accident and she slide under my radar. She teaches English and is very independent. Then to find out, she also has a very conservative mindset. I too feel like the luckiest guy.
