Republican Successes are Not Accidents
Townhall ^ | September 06, 2008 | Megan Basham

The Obama campaign and their friends in the media are finally starting to admit that Republicans have gotten some things right. Not just in the last few days but also in the last few years.

After John McCain gave what was a less-than-rousing but authentically American speech, talk at MSNBC turned to how he will use the “mistake” that has turned out to be his greatest asset. How, Newsweek’s Washington Bureau Chief Howard Fineman asked MSNBC host Keith Olbermann, will McCain’s “accidental brilliance” of picking Sarah Palin as his running mate continue to bolster his bid for the presidency?

This is the new mainstream media line when it comes to Palin. Not that she was an ingenious choice, arrived at after a thorough weighing (and yes vetting) of all the pros and cons she would bring to his candidacy. Nor even that she was a calculated gamble that paid off. But that her arrival on the political scene at a critical time with a critical message was simply the result of dumb luck.

This seems like a dangerous bit of spin for the left. Even if the public swallows the idea that the uncovering of hidden-gem Palin was a mere fluke, what does that fluke’s ability to reverse the momentum of the election say about the Obama-Biden ticket? It is hardly a projection of strength and confidence to suggest that their platform of change is so weak a lucky whirlwind in heels and lipstick can make off with it.

In a move he will surely come to regret in the weeks to come Obama used the same tactic in an interview with Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly earlier in the day. When O’Reilly pointed out the unassailable fact that the surge in Iraq is working, the for-now frontrunner admitted that it “succeeded beyond our wildest dreams.” But he also insisted that it did so “in ways that nobody anticipated…including President Bush and the other supporters.”

At best, this seems like an embarrassingly naïve position, at worst a willfully ignorant one. Why would Bush, Cheney, Jack Keane, and others have initiated the surge at all if they had not anticipated the ways it would succeed and measured them against ways it could fail?

Like his media sympathizers’ insistence that Palin was akin to a lightning strike, Obama’s response is likely to strike most voters as fundamentally childish. Sure their strategies are working. Sure Bush is defeating the terrorists, and McCain may very well defeat me. But not because they meant to…

There are multiple things that the Bush Administration and Congressional Republicans have to answer for in the last eight years —spending and a lack of meaningful immigration reform topping that list. But just as their failures are their own, so their successes are no accidents. And the mark of a leader, nay the mark of an adult is to give credit where is credit is due.

Ask any kid who’s ever had a Monopoly or checkers board turned over on him after a win. “You got lucky” is the last resort of losers.

"Luck" is when preparedness meets opportunity.

President Jimmy Carter won because of Watergate and President Bill Clinton won because of Ross Perot. Both were Southern governors. That's it since LBJ, folks. There is no Ross Perot or Watergate this year and Senator Obama sure ain't a Southern governor.

2006 is the exception to the rule. When Republicans fail to stand up for their principles and govern like Democrats, they have heads handed to them. When they stand up for those principles and cut taxes and spending, they win. That's as simple as it gets.

The only candidates the main stream media knows about are the ones (liberals) they promote.

There have been Governor Sarah Palin articles, pictures and news posted on freerepublic for at least 6 months-—this site is tough on candidates, especially on Republicans in primary season—Governor Sarah Palin’s pick is certainly no accident.

Oh, yes. God forbid that these self-appointed intellectual elites ever have to admit to being outsmarted by those "stoopid Republicans".

A great line from the article.
" Ask any kid who’s ever had a Monopoly or checkers board turned over on him after a win. “You got lucky” is the last resort of losers."

Obama, a sore loser, he didn't get HIS WAY.
In fact, this is the mind set and attitude of any liberal.

In other words Obama is saying the surge had nothing to do with the American troops who fought and died to make it happen. According to him it was just a fluke. Nobody will ever see a Democrat praise the American Armed Forces unless it's done to score points. I really despise this little turd for saying this.

An Obama presidency would be an unbroken succession of “perfect storms.”

Sort of like the way that Soviet agriculture was hit by an unbroken string of “droughts” almost immediately after the farms were collectivized.

Liberals, Democrats . MSM in their self centered childish arrogance can not fathom in their minds that their policies, ideology, and world views are just plain wrong, or that they can accept defeat.
They can not accept that Conservatism does work like Capitalism works.
The same thing can be said if in Nov that McCain/Palin wins by a even larger landslide than even Ronald Reagan did in 1984, the Dems would still call for recounts and say that we just got " Lucky ".

Ohh yeah, BTW DEMS ? President Bush in 2004 could have contested a few states results that had a smaller margin than Ohio did, and your boy Kerry almost contested Ohio.

You were ticking off a list of Southern governors who had become president. I was just pointing out that you missed one.

The liberal elites have a monopoly on brains, according to them. This may be the Rs’ greatest advantage. The libs are supremely arrogant. They believe their own bs.
The media were lazy not to vet Sarah. Her name’s been out there for months. So, now they’re caught with their pants down. Good!
What will Hussein’s choice of Biden be called on Nov. 5th? How about his party’s choice of him? Brilliant? I don’t think so.
I’d love to know how much time and effort they’re devoting now to saving their congressioanal majorities.

OK OBAMA ? tell us less informed ( in your mind, Steerage class folk ) people why the surge has worded then ?
Was it because you had secret negotiations with your terrorist buddies over in the Middle East to lay off the Americans ?

Another good paragraph - underline my emphasis: Even if the public swallows the idea that the uncovering of hidden-gem Palin was a mere fluke, what does that fluke’s ability to reverse the momentum of the election say about the Obama-Biden ticket? It is hardly a projection of strength and confidence to suggest that their platform of change is so weak a lucky whirlwind in heels and lipstick can make off with it.

The real accident was Barack Obama being “right” on Iraq.

Even if one stipulates that Iraq was a mistake (and I don’t), BO has yet to answer the question: what nugget of insight led him to make this judgment? A toss of the coin could have been “right.”

When nearly the entirety of the U.S. government, plus world leaders like Tony Blair and foreign intelligence services thought Saddam a threat, what information did BO have as an Illinois state legislator upon which to rest his decision?

O’Reilly should have asked him that one. But Bill was more interested in making headlines about the surge than getting to the crux of the matter.

Reagan suffered from a whole lot of dumb luck, too.

He was dumb as a box of rocks; even was senile in his second term; was clearly going to start WW3; and that “Tear Down this Wall” line a total loser.

McCain is just as dumb politically as Reagan.
