Scientists preparing to fire up the world's largest atom smasher are being flooded with phone calls and emails – even death threats – from people worried that the Large Hadron Collider, when activated, will obliterate planet Earth.

I remember a friend of mine telling me how he read a book about this by Douglas Preston called the Blasphemer. Although it had more to do with religious fanaticism and promoted anti Christian bigotry that made Karl Sagan's Contact look like somthing from Pat Robertson. But this is based on an actual machine. They want to simulate the big bang. If what I have been hearing is true it is going to be one Big Bang alright.

Question for the truthers...if this thing ends the world, will it also be labeled an inside job?

I sure hope John Wiley Price doesn't find out about this.

Just in case, can we get Congress to attend the test?

I don’t think you can intimidate these scientists. They have large hadrons after all.

Well, the Lord does say that the last day will arrive very sudden.

God created everything to live. "To be -- for this he created all. Death was not God's doing, he takes no pleasure in the extinction of the living. It was the devil's envy that brought death into the world." (Ws.1:12-15, 2:24).

"By the word of God the heavens were made, their whole array by the breath of his mouth...He spoke and it was created; he commanded, and there it stood." (Ps.33:6-9).
"...when he shouts, the world disintegrates." (Ps.46:6).

Perhaps the most telling of all:
""The Day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then with a roar the sky will vanish, the elements will catch fire and fall apart, the earth and all that it contains will be burnt up." (2 Peter 3:10).

That's why the bible tells you to repent and save yourself while you have time, because there will be no last minute rush.

Pure paranoia out of scientific ignorance.

It will be fine, and even possibly open doors to understanding that could revolutionize our understanding of all around us.

Proving out string theory for one.

Geez, that would be a rather unexpected and rather immediate end to life.

Stop worrying. There’s no such thing as a black hole of any kind or sort, artificial or otherwise.

Like global warming. Ignorant "scientists" propagating nonsense.

WOW, how cool is that? So if they point it toward, say, China . . . ???

I'm kidding. It will called be the "thunderclap heard round the world." Right before it sizzles out.

I think too many people have been watching old black and white science fiction movies. I think it's absolutely "mind-bending" pun intended.

I hope they put it on live stream tv so those of us without a television can watch.

Of course, they could invite all the Democrats in Congress to come watch, just in case. . .
/sarc?

I don’t think the world is going to end, but I don’t think that anyone can discount the possibility that there could be some serious disturbances created in the whole fabric of space/time, not to mention the possibility of dimensional rifts, gravitational anomalies, you name it.

One does not have to be a scientist to be concerned about the idea of unleashing untold amounts of raw power with a basic goal of “wanting to see what happens.”

While generally disproven, there were for a number of years theories here and there that the first atomic explosion at Alamogordo New Mexico opened up some sort of small fissure resembling a permanent ‘shadow’ at ground zero where remote instruments dropped into the opening indicated an absence of gravity, time moving backwards, and all sorts of weirdness, and that was based on the unknown after effects of a rudimentary atomic device with output measured in kilotons.

Fast forward 63 years to this far more sophisticated and more powerful experiment, and there is no telling what sort of results we may (or may not) see.

I’m not going to cancel any subscriptions or discontinue any basic services as of Wednesday but I’m going to be curious about what takes place.
