NEW YORK (AP) More than 40 million people tuned in to the Republican convention Wednesday to hear vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin introduce herself to voters.
That audience rivaled the one for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama last week. Nielsen Media Research estimated 37.2 million people watched Palin on either ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel or MSNBC. PBS estimated it had four million viewers for the speech.
Last week Obama had 38.4 million viewers on the commercial networks, topping 40 million with PBS and C-SPAN added in.

If only there were Greek columns and gaudy props to bring in the intellectuals.
So she was seen by more people and on less networks than Obama’s Greek god coronation.
I read in another thread that Biden got 24 million viewers for his acceptance speech.
The MSM/Libs attack helped raise Gov. Palin’s viewership by 16 million, it seems.
Maybe we should thank them. LOL.

There’s a NFL game tonight, but my old buddy, Joe Gibbs will be speaking at the convention right before Lindsey Graham and McCain.
I must confess
Ich bin eine Paliner
she can hunt fish govern and kick liberal butt
and that’s before noon ;-)
The media attack on Palin leading up to her speech, caused quite a buildup in interest. Many, if not most people were tuning in expecting her to stumble through the speech and fail(I must say I had my doubts about her). What they got was the opposite. This lady, and her outstanding speech have been the best thing to happen for the conservative movement and republican party in years.
That’s great
Why does Drudge have her at < Obama?
So did she get more viewers than him or what? I find these numbers confusting.
Anyway, FOX is probably the only news agency that will report this.
We watched on CSPAN, that’s for sure.
confusing*
GREAT Grampa Dave! I love it!
I believe C-Span also broadcasted Palin?
The pic of Obama is disturbing. He looks really really awful.
Can you put a “before and after” shot, one of this cig pic and one with him holding his arrogant head up like he is God?
We prefer CSPAN to the talking heads networks. If only we could get rid of the callers...
C-Span had all the coverage of the speeches. Rudy’s speech went all over the Country as well as at 9:00 cdt the networks and cable picked up the Convention. Would imagine that is why they flip flopped him with the Hawaii Governor because his speech was filled with red meat and he got the crowd really going before Gov Palin spoke. It was a smart move which the MSM hated would be my guess.
it's funny that they keep comparing Palin with Obama... isn't that weird? Obama keeps comparing himself with her, too... this seems like a very bad move on his part...
i just saw Hawaii's Governor, Linda Lingle, speaking casually with a reporter on CSPAN... what a wonderful speaker... she clearly and concisely promoted both McCain and Palin in a way that i never hear from just about anybody in the political limelight... she hit every positive point of the duo, and in such an articulate way... she seems fantastic!
Not defending Drudge as I don’t frequent his site.
But, Nielsen Media Research estimated 37.2 million for Palin and 38.4 million for Obama. Thus she drew less in the ratings. Adding the C-Span types it was probably still less.
Yep. I watched it on CSPAN 1 as I’m sure a lot did. No commercials no stupid commentary.
Thanks! Just sent this to two Democrats. ROFLOL
Consider each a product. The BHO product has spent literally hundreds of millions to get name recognition into the market place; this does not even count the 'in the tank' MSM which extended at least another $100,000,000 free and positive coverage. The BHO marketing period has been at least 18 months, if not longer.
The SHP product has spent easily less than $1,000,000 with a marketing period of less than a week. Additionally, the 'in the tank' MSM spent another $10,000,000+ in negative coverage of SHP as well as her family including her minor children.
From an investment point of view, the Democrats, including their media shills, make the Edsel or Classic Coke look like good investments. If the last week is prologue, the next President and Vice President will be John McCain and Sarah Palin, respectively.
The Hollywood Candidate vs. America’s Candidate.
Doesn’t get any clearer than that.
Nielsen doesn’t do ratings for C-SPAN or any other channel or network which doesn’t accept advertising. The purpose of Nielsen is to judge viewership primarily for advertising rate setting but they are popularly used to determine who is more popular.
HBO doesn’t get rated either and neither does PBS. But Univision does get rated and they had 3.4M viewers at that time last night but they watched some other regular programming and not Palins speech.
But factoring in BET, TV ONE, Univision and Telemundo being on a RNC boycott (apparently), Palin can easily be said to have beat Obama in ratings. We’ll be analyzing network vs. network to prove this but it seems pretty much obvious now.
Obama’s speech was carried by Black Entertainment Television and TV One, cable networks that are primarily geared to black audiences. The two networks did not carry coverage of Palin, nor did Spanish-language broadcast networks Univision and Telemundo, which carried Obama’s address.
Some say she can field dress a Moose. Can’t wait to see her field dress Joe Biden.
My wife and I watched it on CSPAN.
Looks like she actually had more viewers, as they neglected to mention C-SPAN’s numbers.
PBS estimated 4 million viewers which was included in Obama’s numbers and left out, gee I wonder why, of Gov Palin’s numbers. According to the AP ... take that for what it is.
I get the Podcast version of the speeches from iTunes. Are they counting the downloads too because some of us are missing the speeches due to time zone differences and work hours.
C-Span isn’t factored in, so she may have beat Obama’s speech “unofficially”.
For those that are rated by Neilson it was only about a million less. And that while being shown on four less networks then Obama was.
That while only being in the race less then one week while they’ve been building Obama up since the 2004 Dem convention.
That despite her only being the VICE Presidential nominee and not the Presidential nominee.
IMO, that’s a win. That’s also a strong sign when you consider less then a week on the national stage that she is very close to upstaging Obama’s reported “star” power, and may well have have done so after last night.
She got more viewers and it is quite obvious by the way the MSM is parsing the story. They said Zero got over 40 million viewers, an arbitrary number, and that Palin also got over 40 million with the 4 million from PBS added on. They failed to mention her CSPAN numbers. They don’t want us to know that the “Historic Night” was topped by a little lady from Alaska. :)
Linda is very popular governor, very liberal on social issues, Jewish, from obama’s home turf and while it wouldn’t be too surprising if she pushed for McCain, it is remarkable that she was used to introduce Palin.
That’s not how I read it. She got 37.2 mil to his 38.4 over the same networks, but PBS estimated 4 million watched their coverage of Palin, boosting her numbers to over 41 mil. No CSPAN numbers for Palin. Meanwhile, they can only say just over 40 mil for Obama with PBS and CSPAN added in.
Okay folks, let’s do some actual head to head match ups here. Obama greatly benefited from having at least four additional networks covering his speech:
BET - Black Entertainment Network
TV ONE (another black network)
Univision (largest Spanish channel - 3.5M Obama viewers!
Telemundo (other Spanish network essentially)
When we compare Their Messiah to Our Barracuda, we see that one actual news channels - the only place we have a verifiable apples to apples match up - Barry got smoked by the Rookie!!
NBC Republican Convention 7.72 Sarah Barracuda
ABC Republican Convention 5.05
CBS Republican Convention 4.63
FNC Republican Convention 9.038
CNN RNC 2008 6.114
MSNBC Special Coverage 3.277
Total 35.829M total viewers
NBC Democratic Nat. Convention 6.269 Their Messiah
ABC Democratic Nat. Convention 5.727
CBS Democratic Nat. Convention 4.459
FNC Democratic Nat. Convention 4.229
CNN Democratic Nat. Convention 8.056
MSNBC Special Coverage 4.097
Total 32.837M total viewers
“Ich bin eine Paliner”
I must admit, that’s one of the better Palinisms I’ve seen coined today. Love it! LOL
Well are you gonna add in BET, etc? In the major networks she was behind..... It really doesn’t matter as she did a great job and in reality she was the VP candidate as being compared to the Presidential candidate.... thus even if she was only down slightly it was a win. Apples to Apples she beat Biden sustantially.
I didn’t mean to sweat ya! I was just trying to get the accurate #.
Thanks,
fs
If Obama's teleprompter broke, he would be dead in the water.
That's where I saw it
But does that count internet. I’m sorry to say, but I could see many of the people who saw Obama watching it on the internet, more than I would expect McCain supporters too. I’m not saying that more people didn’t watch McCain, but I would check the Youtube numbers before saying anything.
