The U.S. military Monday handed control of Iraq's Anbar province to Iraqi security forces.
U.S. forces will withdraw to bases and rejoin Iraqi operations in Anbar only at the request of the provincial governor.
Anbar is a Sunni-dominated province whose inhabitants turned against U.S. forces soon after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. Anbar towns, such as Fallujah and Ramadi became insurgent strongholds, where militants waged fierce battles against U.S. troops.
Violence in Anbar began to subside in 2006 when Sunni tribes became weary of al-Qaida's brutality against the local population. The tribes formed councils and joined U.S.-led forces in fighting the group.

Obambi and Biden are deeply disappointed again.
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraq's Anbar province -- once dominated by Sunni insurgents but now a bastion of tribal opposition against the militants -- will soon be run by the Iraqi military.
"We have seen a dramatic increase in security there," said Rear Adm. Patrick Driscoll, Multi-National Forces spokesman, speaking to reporters in Baghdad on Sunday.
"I think that the trend now in Anbar is to move from the violent kinetic to the rebuilding process," he said.
In a significant success for American military planners following the "surge" in US forces in the country, Anbar became the 11th of Iraq's 18 provinces, and the first Sunni-dominated one, to pass into the control of the government.
Just wait until we drag up Bin Laden in November. That will get their panties in a wad. /sarc
hand most of the responsibilities to the iraqis and
move on to georgia, i say!
“See? The Iraqis are doing fine, we never needed to do a surge.”
Just wait.
Wailing and gnashing of teeth in the liberal camp...
Dems have the monopoly on rewriting history... just get on with the program buddy...
Diyala, Mosul and Baghdad - not ready yet. Some of the southern provinces are close, but not ready yet.
It would be disastrous to leave too soon.

More good news. They’ve got their own security forces now stabliized there, and local governments organized and functioning. This is key.
Quagmire.
Totally.
Restless Anbar disappointment for Hussein bin Biden.
yes, sir!
as you say.
carry on.
...days later, reality VOA.
Great contrast.
NoBambi comes from that far left wing daily-kos America hating entitlement driven segment of the populace.
He will go to any/all ends to eliminate his opponents. Look how quickly he went after Sarah Palins family.

//President Bush hailed the turnover as a major achievement, saying the region had been “transformed and reclaimed by the Iraqi people.”
“Iraqi forces will now take the lead in security operations in Anbar, with American troops moving into an overwatch role,” Bush said in a statement//
The One and The One with The One are deeply saddened.
Casualties in Iraq should further drop month to month as our responsibilities decrease in the country. Hopefully Iraq is on pace to become UAE.

What page of the New York Times will this article appear on?

That would be wonderful all around. I still wish General Patton was leading the WOT.
I finally decided what I want my tagline to be but appears to be too long for the space.
“There is only one tactical principle which is not subject to change. It is to use the means at hand to inflict the maximum amount of wound, death, and destruction on the enemy in the minimum amount of time.”
- General George Patton Jr
a truly wonderful and historic day
ari-freedom, I second that sentiment.

Many of us have given blood, sweat and tears to get to this day.

The U.S. military said the transfer of security was an "important milestone with regard to security" in the province.

I’m right there with you, Ma.

So this is now ‘success’ is it?
Well I think so, part of success anyway.
It was the intent of the USA to restore Iraq to sovereignty.
There aren't a whole lot of stories out there to chronicle this magnificent event. Most have a "Yeah, but". However, this story tells it well.Victory in Anbar - WSJ
Well, Ma, it’s just hard to comprehend. After all the years and losses and heartache, we give them the keys and say “We fixed it up as best we can. Drive it, it’s good to go”.
It’s a far cry from the times when I would talk to Gold Star Moms about them getting yet another piece of their boy back, months later. Some will forget, but not you and I. Our investment is paying off. We shall not waver.

We’ve got them out of diapers, got them walking, and they’ve been riding on training wheels. We are removing the training wheels, but we’re still running alongside.
We’ve left pieces of ourselves.
They will not fail. They’ve got a lot to think about.
If they look like they’re going to waver, I know a girl just might go smack them upside the head and pull their bootstraps up so high they’ll beg for mercy. She owes somebody a wedgie and one of these days she’ll be looking to pay it back however she can : ) In the meantime, she’s taken to hangin’ with the big dogs (as far as I’ll allow : ) taken some lessons from mama- taken over cooking for the jarheads... and lovin’ it.
