NEW ORLEANS -- Residents who try to ride out Hurricane Gustav will be making the biggest mistake of their lives, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin warned on Saturday.
Nagin Warns Of 'Storm Of Century'! Video
"You need to be scared. You need to be concerned. You need to get your butts out of New Orleans. This is the storm of the century," Nagin said.
Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for Westbank starting at 8 a.m. Sunday, and mandatory evacuations of the Eastbank will begin at noon.
"Riding it out would be the biggest mistake you could make in your life," Nagin said.
Nagin warned that no emergency services will be available to residents who choose not to leave. He told residents who want to stay to make sure they have an ax, as they will be cutting through their roofs to get out of their flooded homes.
Nagin said 2005's Hurricane Katrina came ashore as a Category 3 storm. Gustav is expected to hit as either a Category 4 or 5.

Any word if the legendary “looter guy” got out yet?
Now he will be proclaimed a hero.
.....some places, given natural disaster history and geograhy, are existing on dwindling borrowed time.
Ray Nagin finally’ evacuates the “Chocolate City”.
Same Nagin who was in Houston riding out the storm during Katrina.
He was forced to go back to New Orleans to fix the mess he created in the Astrodome.
Beat me to it.
Ray thinks that he’s now become a hero after screwing the pooch in ‘05.

Quick Study
4 or 5? Those folks need to get out and quick
Sounds like it could wipe out the buildings in New Orleans just by the wind.
Will be no New Orleans left if this forecast holds.
Prayers for everyone in the hurricane’s path.
As long as the good people get out somehow I can’t find anything wrong with New Orleans ceasing to exist.
Nah, He's got a governor that will remove him if he doesn't order an evacuation...
How many people did he say would be left in the city ?
5?
I can just see looters saying..FIELD DAY..lets ride it out.
PING
Wait a minute. Didn’t Ray Nagin stay in New Orleans during Katrina? I thought he was stranded on the 27th floor of a downtown building with his emergency team and his cell phone? And he called Bush and told him to get his “ass” down to New Orleans because he needed reinforcements?
Anyway, let’s hope and pray that the worst doesn’t happen. Can New Orleans survive a direct hit from a category 4 or 5 hurricane? Even though they said the levees have been reinforced, wouldn’t the wind damage cause mass destruction? Remember last time, Katrina veered off at the last minute so wind damage in N.O. was minimal. It was the flooding that caused the mass destruction. Combining the winds and new flooding, will there be anything left?
It’s a frightening thought.
Let’s pray the worst part of this storm hits lightly populated areas and misses New Orleans.
Probably not.
Oh, this time around he will force an evacuation lesson learned. Then he will be proclaimed a hero. Memories are short. ;-)
Between Michael Moore's "there's a god" and this corrupt, opportunist chucklehead, I'm beginning to wonder if God might just decide to spare New Orleans.
ROTFLMAO!!!!! That is probably the funniest thing I have seen in MONTHS. M O N T H S !!!!

It will be bad but Katrina will remain Queen beach. Just a hunch....
Wish I could claim it, but I loved it when I found it.
Three years, almost to the day, too late.
Ray just wants everyone out of New Orleans until he can get his “paper work” straight.
From the Weather Channel website
Animated infrared satellite maps:
Most of these they update about every 20-25 minutes. I recommend using a screen enlargement feature if you have one. I typically zoom to 200%.
I'm told they might be slow to download on dialup.

They just shifted the track a little to the east which is not a good sign. To early to tell, but it could be as bad or worse for New Orleans than Katrina.

Ray is setting up President Bush for the fall/blame, just watch and see... if its bad = Bush fault, if its really bad = Bush fault, no matter what happens, it will be Bush’s and the republicans fault for any problems just check with any media outlet they will tell you the feds (Bush) should have done more.
If it doesn’t apply to you, please ignore.
I was referring to some the comments by those who don’t have a dog in this fight.
“Gustav is expected to hit as either a Category 4 or 5.”
Last I checked it was a Category 4 at 145 mph (a Category 5 is 155 mph)but the experts were saying that it my hit as a Category 5!
Katrina hit as a Category 3.
Hurricane ‘Gustav’ my turn out to be far more powerful than Katrina.
If it hits as a Category 5 it will destroy everything in it’s path!

Thanks for the links.
I'm praying and hope others will also that the storm will not be as bad as it appears could happen. If it happens that the coastal region, New Orleans, and to the west are spared, I will not criticize Nagin for crying "Wolf" or getting peoples' lives all disrupted for nothing.
I probably won't think of him as a hero but one who has learned something from his mistakes and give him the benefit of the doubt of acting in the best interests of those he leads.
It would be hoped that some provisions for a shelter will be made but not publicized for the stubborn who refuse to leave and that some emergency services will be available no matter how crude. It would seem the more humane thing to do. But by declaring there will be no this or that may encourage more people to get out in a more timely, organized manner might be the smartest thing to do.
My heart goes out to the people there. They don't deserve a repeat of Katrina or anything close, and disasters anywhere have a ripple effect on a lot of the rest of the country.
I was remembering Dallas...
If they're like me, this is like a bad dream. I think it's more shock than anything. It's just unbelievable for this area to get hit like this again. And there's nothing we can do. makes you feel helpless.
The wheels on the bus go ‘round and ‘round
‘round and ‘round
‘round and ‘round
The wheels on the bus go....
FoxNews had said early today that there is a high pressure system sitting in the center of the country which might act to block the hurricane and cause it to veer west somewhat once it gets close to the Gulf Coast.
What reason are my tax dollars used to fix NO?
No long term solution has been shown.
A 100 year storm could have and will still destroy NO.
Move it or lose it.
Not one penny of the peoples money should go towards NO.
It can not be saved without federal dollars, otherwise it would have been done sooner and at a profit by the market.
Yeah, no more money for tornado damage either. Right?
May you and yours not suffer.
good luck to you, buddy
At what point does it become clear.
My statements are directly aimed at New Orleans.
I believe it is unique.
It won't. It must be in the dozens of times by now that people get suckered by the projected path. The closer this thing gets to landfall, it'll be "Lake Charles to New Iberia, New Iberia to Morgan City, Morgan City to New Orleans, New Orleans to Biloxi, Biloxi to Mobile"... stop. If I were in the Florida Panhandle, I'd get the heck out of there. Katrina went due west for a while to get close enough to New Orleans before beginning her turn. This one is going right up the gut.
