1. Hes desperate. Lets stop pretending this race is as close as national polling suggests. The truth is McCain is essentially tied or trailing in every swing state that matters and too close for comfort in several states, such as Indiana and Montana, that the GOP usually wins pretty easily in presidential races. On top of that, voters seem very inclined to elect Democrats in general this election and very sick of the Bush years.
McCain could easily lose in an electoral landslide. That is the private view of Democrats and Republicans alike.
McCains pick shows he is not pretending. Politicians, even mavericks like McCain, play it safe when they think they are winning or see an easy path to winning. They roll the dice only when they know that the risks of conventionality are greater than the risks of boldness.
The Republican brand is a mess. McCain is reasonably concluding that it wont work to replicate George W. Bush and Karl Roves electoral formula, based around national security and a big advantage among Y chromosomes, from 2004. ..........."

Um....This is a desperate article.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Indiana and Montana will not be close.
McCain is aiming for a landslide victory, so he has a mandate to implement his policies.
Politico.com has gone over to The Dark Side. Not even the pretense of impartiality.
I agree. Obama is probably 5-10% worse off that the polling shows. Many Democrats and independents won't vote for Obama, but won't say so for fear of being branded racist.
Ummmmmmm ... that is the private view of Democrats and Republicans looking at their privates rather than the polls. Everyone else knows the race was already neck and neck even before Palin was picked. I agree, this shows more the desparation of the author than it does the desperation of McCain.
the GOP is no more dinged up than the Dems. Politicians in general are despised right now. Congress is in single digits. Sarah Palin has the potential to do wonders for the GOP brand. McCain is generally respected across the board and has been for years. The party will move in the right direction this year.
I have been slow in warming to McCain. This pick has me really excited. As I’ve said before, this election is a chance to DESTROY the MainstreamMedia once and for all. If Obama loses with the incredible amount of resources they’ve spent and what little credibility they have on the line, then it’s over for them.
The analysis of Vandehei and Harris has the objectivity and neutrality of a carnival hawker singing the praises of the trash he is selling to gullible dimwits.
Seems to me that the media appears to be desperate?
I think Palin helps the GOP brand. I say they should publish more pics of her brandishing weapons, tout how she is pro-life and wants to drill in ANWR.
No votes will be lost. Some will be picked-up.
I’m feeling good and looking forward to the debates. And I don’t even like McCain.

LOL... excellent one :)
A lot of people in the country also have that opinion of her now but wait until after the convention and the debates.
McCain has actually convinced me he knows what he's doing.
Methinks they doth protest too loudly.
If McCain and Palin hold their own from here on out, it will be a landslide for them.
It was founded by Washington Post people. They always had a tilt.
But in those same states Barry is not "essentially tied"?
I'm just not sharp enough to understand how that works.
Obama-42%
No recount!
They started there, just went darker, that’s all.
Joe Nobody’s talk branding like they’re Somebody.
Hmm. Sounds like the same BS when Kerry was running. Sorry, but McCain is not the desparate one. McCains ad campains were slowly deflating the Messiah. This one just happened to speed up the implosion!
It occurs to me that if an Obamanite landslide was so certain they would mention it.
Politico is in the panic mode.
Okay. I'll be the lone dissenting voice on the thread (Flame away. I'm sure you will...:-). Most of America doesn't realize anything. They will blame Bush for everything and take it out on McCain. He has an incredibly uphill battle ahead.
“Um....This is a desperate article.”
Exactly. Something we should already know from the Thompson campaign is that Politico is pretty much an arm of the Democratic party.
They have such tunnel-vision DC perspective.
“He’s desperate...”
1. NOT an act of desperation. It was a POLITICAL decision. McCain Has been leading, tied or within a few points of the “ONE”. Before he even announced a VeeP, he knocked O’bama’s two “bump” opportunities down to a)Picking Biden-0%, and b)Convention-6%. That’s about the absolute worst any candidate has done since Nixon picked Agnew. Even Dan Quayle brought Bush41 a 12% bump.
Some of the reasons McManiac chose her are:
Choose a Veep nominee that has a track record of supporting core beliefs. Very successful.
Take the attention away from the Dems after their Convention. Very successful.
Bring the Core Conservatives back into the fold. Wildly successful.
Consolidate the disaffected female voters. Appears to be successful.
“...Lets stop pretending this race is as close as national polling suggests.”
OK, good idea. It’s not as close as the polls say, McCain/Palin are eating your guy’s lunch!
“On top of that, voters seem very inclined to elect Democrats in general this election and very sick of the Bush years.”
Really? The polls say otherwise.
Get a real job, you maroon!
All day long I heard the talking heads ask about the suitability of Palin in the event that there be a passing the torch, and nary a word about the suitability of a torch bearer barely 3 years out of the Illinois Statehouse who announced his candidacy on his 100th day as a US Senator.
Maybe one day they will get it.
McCain’s choice is not a gamble nor much of a mystery. He is saying that it will be his presidency, he will be the leader. He is clearly differentiating himself from the Bush years by saying that he will not rely as much on the counsel of assembled old hands but on his decades of acquired wisdom and experience.
In addition, Palin appeals to the value voters in PA, OH, MI, MO and a few other key swing states. I’m not considering so much the votes of women, but the votes of people who are responsible, self-reliant, believe in The Diety and in their communities. He is trying to get the base a little more willing to get out and vote for him.
Maybe those who get paid to think and write about these issues will get it someday.
I’ve been reading news stories about Obama attacking McCain’s married wealth. Where does he get the balls to mock McCain not knowing how many houses his wife owns, when Obama himself is able to obtain, from developers, premium Chicago property at deep discount? Mrs. McCain inherited the wealth from her hard-working parents. Obama bought his land at a 60% discount from the previous purchase price - in the middle of the biggest real estate boom in American history - no doubt some kind of Chicagoland deal with at least the expectation of a quid pro quo, if one hadn’t been delivered already.
It is unlikely but it would be great if this caused Democrats to lose control of the Congress.
How is it desperate if McCain is tied in the polls? with the messiah’s fawning press coverage obama should be trouncing Mccain in every poll.
Politico. Right. ‘Nuf said.
I would say this article is GARBAGE! Just like all the trash left in Denver by the Dems!
Every 4 years we get the Dems believing that they will win because of the slanted polling and usually they lose. This time with people so spooked about Obama and his Carter like policies I do not think the election will turn out the way they think it will and they might actually lose some house and senate seats!
It’s the WaPo whores at the Politico who are desperate.
Desperate? Sounds like the Democrats are doing a lot of projecting. Governor Palin scares them to death.
if obama aint up by 15, he’s down by ten. At this point, even Mondale was up by 15.
From what I understand McCain has a comfortable lead in Indiana. Besides, we haven't began to work on Obama yet and won't until after the next week's convention.
First, the most merciful Obama should have had an 8 - 10 point lead going into the DNC convention.
Now he's tied coming out of his convention and the Republican candidate made his VP choice.
Pitiful, pitiful.
