BEWARE any politician that says he is going to raise taxes. Even if he promises it's only on the super-wealthy.

The reality is this: there aren't enough rich people to generate substantial tax revenue from increases. And poor people have no money. That just leaves the middle class.

So, for me, it's a question of whether the politician is philosophically opposed or supportive of tax increases. If he supports tax increases, he means the MIDDLE CLASS, no matter what lies he tells.

Well, you have to give the little fascist credit for his restraint. He only wants 55%, after all. :-)

“... and penalize people who leave the state by seizing 55% of assets exceeding $20 million.”

Yup. You could see this coming.

When the productive folks gather up their goods to flee, let them go, but keep “the goods”.

Make no mistake. Perhaps not this time, but SOMEday this is going to become law in California as the EuroAmericans continue to desert that state in ever-increasing numbers.

Whether such a law can be constitutional or not, may have to be decided by the United States Supreme Court. But it WILL come, someday...

I think it would pass in a heartbeat. But if Californians are so dumb as to drive their richest taxpayers out of the state, it will make California's current $15 billion deficit budget look like child's play compared to what's going to be coming down the pike.

In a blog this morning, it turns out the main obstacle to a budget deal in California are the teachers' unions. They will never accept a hard spending cap. There you have it!

Since Reagan the best thing to come out of California is I-10 West.

Did you mean I-10 East?

We want rich people to live here.
Don’t we?

Wasn’t there an episode of “The Simpsons” where the town of Springfield levied a leaving town tax....

Dunno about that but there was a Little Lulu comic book back circa 1949-50 where Lulu tells Alvin a story about a spendthrift King who comes up with the idea of putting a tax on taxes; "and taxes on taxes on taxes! And taxes on taxes on taxes on taxes!" At the end, he's taken away by the men in white coats.

Of course, that was in the Old America.

...and penalize people who leave the state by seizing 55% of assets exceeding $20 million.

Ex-governor Celeste of Ohio tried this exit tax idea years ago. He got a law passed where any company that closed its doors and left Ohio would have to leave behind a sum equal to 6 months payroll as an exit tax.

After the bill went into effect, Celeste was scratching his head trying to figure out why new company starts in Ohio had dropped to zero. The state legislators quickly rescinded the bill and things got back to normal. CA might try to see the lesson here: people and wealth are highly mobile.

Does anyone in CA realize that another option is to reduce spending rather than raising taxes?

It this gets on the ballot and looks like it will pass there will be a mass exodus out of CA before the tax can go into effect.

Even if they could somehow hang onto people that are there, the state would die a slow death as no one would be interested in moving to California. Their pool of talent would be limited to those already there, and any that did decide to leave wouldn't come back.

Talented people would be encouraged to get out while they were young and before the accumulated a lot of assets. It would be worth it to take the huge hit once and get out from under the oppressive taxes for younger people, and maybe even older people since they know their estates will be taxed just as heavily on their deaths anyway.

California might get a quick infusion of tax dollars (which they would undoubtedly spend quickly), but their tax base would quickly dwindle to nothing.

Exactly. The number of people in the cart already outnumber those who pull the cart in California. Guess which set vote for the Democrats. Its hopeless to expect that sort of lunacy to disappear in the once Golden State!

The Civil War more or less settled the issue of whether a state could secede from the Union. But I have to ask, can we eject a state from the Union?

This has ZERO chance of passing, even here in liberal California. Why not? First, well over a third of the state is Republican and will vote against it on principle alone. Second, this proposal takes two serious shots at the SF Bay Area, which accounts for almost half of the liberals in the state. It would force them to drain and restore Hetch Hetchy (a very unpopular idea in the bay, even among liberals). Second, the Bay Area liberal element is directed by the Marin moonbats, who tend to be very wealthy. They are usually liberal right up to the point where you put their PERSONAL wealth at risk.

The only people who are going to support this will be the liberal rabble in L.A., and there aren’t nearly enough of them to get this passed.
