GOP adds global warming to its 2008 platform By Jackie Kucinich Posted: 08/26/08 04:34 PM [ET] The National Republican Party for the first time is expected to acknowledge global warming in its 2008 GOP Platform, according to a draft of the document.

“Increased atmospheric carbon has a warming effect on the earth,” the document said. “While the scope and long term consequences of this warming effect are the subject of ongoing research, we believe the United States should take measured and reasonable steps today.”

Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), the party’s presumptive presidential nominee, is a strong proponent of tackling global warming and has co-authored legislation to address the issue.

In the GOP’s 2004 platform, the term "global warming" was completely absent.

How current is this? I was in a meeting today, but I could’ve sworn I picked up something on my Google reader that said they took out “Global Warming” and left “protect the environment.”

I hope you’re right, Corin. Cultic AlGorishness has no place in the GOP.

“While the scope and long term consequences of this warming effect are the subject of ongoing research, we believe the United States should take measured and reasonable steps today.”

While I’m not happy that the GOP is buying into this, the above sounds a heck of a lot better than “We have a consensus, the debate is over!” and “We’re going to do a bunch of things that may or may not help, regardless of the consequences.”

If the platform states that that global warming might exist, it should explain why I saw snow, the last two Easters, in Chicago.

The GOP wants to increase government and taxes. Good grief! They haven't learned from the shellacking they took in 2006. Its like the ghost of Red Arnold took over the party!

The full statement:

“Increased atmospheric carbon is a result of the earth warming, such warming is part of a naturally occuring climate cycle. While the scope and long term consequences of this warming cycle are beneficial, we believe the United States should take measured and reasonable steps today to prepare for the inevitable cooling part of the climate cycle which will be the cause of massive starvation.”

LOL - I’d like them to explain how back in the mid-70s I was running around without a coat and no snow on the ground in Central Illinois (near Peoria) on Christmas Day! ;) Don’t ask me what year it was - I do know I could still ride the red flyer tricycle that my grandparents had for me at their house.

Global warming is such a joke. If it were man-made then why it is happening on other planets in our solar system without SUV’s!

About five times, when I argued, with liberals, about global warming, I reminded them about the 1980 heat wave.

The 1980 United States heat wave was among the most devastating natural disasters in terms of deaths and destruction in U.S. history. The heat wave claimed at least 1,700 lives. Because of the massive drought, agricultural damage reached $20 billion. It is among the billion-dollar weather disasters listed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

A strong high pressure ridge in the central and southern United States allowed temperatures to soar to 90 °F, almost every day from June to September. The drought was also caused for this particular reason.

In Kansas City, Missouri, the high temperature went below 90 only twice and soared above 100 °F for 17 days straight. In Memphis, the temperature reached an all-time high of 108 °F, on July 13, 1980, part of a 15-day stretch of temperatures above 100 °F, that lasted from July 6–20, 1980.

I tell the other person that I don’t remember a heat wave that bad since 1980, and I ask how we can be having global warming now, although we didn’t have global warming, in 1980, when we were hotter. I haven’t found anyone who knows the answer.

Platform statements are near meaningless, put together by folks who love to hear themselves talk. Did anyone actually watch the CSPAN coverage with the platform committee today? Worse than watching paint dry.
