Anyone else notice that Michelle didn't Thank her Mom in her speech?
Didn't hear any of the pundits comment on this last night.
All it would have taken was six words, Thank You Mom, I Love You.
Opportunity of a lifetime to honor the person who raised and cared for you, gave you a great video intro, and you missed it.
Shame on you Michelle.

How about “I am racist, communist America hater?”
Only one thing matter:
POWER.
Sad, but true.
For all of the attempt at humanizing I felt this speech was more about what’s in it for me........
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Because it is all about Michelle. . . .
If you get a chance watch it again.
I sat there with my wife watching for it, as I found it odd that she spent more time on her brother, and father, and left out her Mom who was in the audience.
Only oblique reference was I stand here as a daughter.....
This slight, tells me a lot about what she is all about.
More importantly, she described how Barack drove her and the new baby home ever so carefully from the hospital. Was this to cloud the FACT that Barack worked to make sure that other newborn babies would be thrown away to die in an ignominious manner?
“I am voting for John McCain.”
“Stop me before I spout again.”
“I’m sorry I’ve been so ungrateful.”
“Haven’t cracked a Bible in years.”
"So, we'll just keep it for a few days and see if it's a blessing or a punishment."
Didn’t think of that, good observation.
This was Political Posturing , not humanizing.
Don’t know if you saw McCain on Leno.
Very natural, quick to make a joke about himself, and right to the point when he had the opportunity to do a little politicking.
Great move on his part to get more face time with Leno, as compared to viewers who would really watch the DNC convention.
You are admirable for listening to this tripe. I turn the tv off when her or his mugs appear. I have had enough already.

The Obamas and the DNC are wrong about the American Dream.
The American Dream is that if you work hard, and persist, you can achieve great things.
Their American Dream seems to be centered on what you can get for free in America. Look at all that’s been given to the Obamas out of all proportion to their efforts and accomplishments.
And I come here as a daughter -- raised on the South Side of Chicago by a father who was a blue collar city worker, and a mother who stayed at home with my brother and me. My mother's love has always been a sustaining force for our family, and one of my greatest joys is seeing her integrity, her compassion, and her intelligence reflected in my own daughters. My Dad was our rock. Although he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in his early thirties, he was our provider, our champion, our hero. But as he got sicker, it got harder for him to walk, it took him longer to get dressed in the morning. But if he was in pain, he never let on. He never stopped smiling and laughing -- even while struggling to button his shirt, even while using two canes to get himself across the room to give my Mom a kiss. He just woke up a little earlier, and worked a little harder.
He and my mom poured everything they had into me and Craig. It was the greatest gift a child could receive: never doubting for a single minute that you're loved, and cherished, and have a place in this world. And thanks to their faith and their hard work, we both were able to go on to college. So I know firsthand from their lives -- and mine -- that the American Dream endures.
She spent an extra paragraph on her dad, presumably because his was a tail of overcoming hardship. I would also venture a guess that given the state of black families in America, particularly absent fathers, they wanted to draw extra emphasis on her dad being there as the breadwinner.
But she did honor her mom as well.
My wife and I wanted to see how much of a politician she is.
Proved it to me when when I saw her slight her Mom..
Also, I believe in know what the other side is really saying, so I can point out to the undecided voters what to watch for.
Surprising how a few little natural things can swing their opinions.
They don’t have to be economists, military strategists, or lawyers to get the simpler stuff , like honor your MOM......
The America dream also has to do with upward mobility. If you work hard, your kids can have a better life/standard of living than you had. It’s been a hallmark of American life that each generation has a better standard of living than the last. I think that’s what Michelle’s story was supposed to convey. Of course, their policies are all about giveaways and class envy, but the story she told was about grit and work and faith.
Actually, I don’t fault Michelle for not telling the world she loves her mother. I think there’s far too much of such obligatory, but essentially meaningless, “I love [fill in the blank with family member’s name]” declarations. You don’t see such declarations in politicians’ speeches in any other country, to my knowledge.
I’d much rather see detailed policy prescriptions from candidates than meaningless pap like “I love Mom.”
Of course, Michelle Obama isn’t a candidate, which makes her presence last night as the main speech-giver quite curious.

Die, Whitey, Die! Die Whitey, Die!
Bet she was thinking them.
Yes, she did say those comments, but didn’t stop, and say the six simple words
Thank You Mom, I Love You.....
That’s what I saw missing, and the reason for this thread....
You’re right. Each of their assignments was given to them because of what they represented, not because they earned them.
They are the Affirmative Action Family Running for President.
To me, this was supposed to be a personalizing speech, and those six words would have shown something.
After all her Mom took the time to lend her voice to the intro of her.
From a political perspective Yes, I agree, no real substance offered
Fox poll this morning showed the majority of their voters thought Michelle won them over.
And, I believe she can get real mean.

CNN showed a clip of it this morning along with the McCain ad featuring Hillary. I was shocked they gave so much face time to McCain.
It’s a dumb thread. She paid tribute to both her parents.
ping (didn’t listen to Mrs. O)

Not unexpected.
Obama/Michelle supporters will rally to their words. What they will miss is their substance.
To me, substance comes from simpler things also, like “ Thank You Mom, I Love You”
Either she, or her speech writers forgot to include that simple humanizing touch.
I tend to believe the off the cuff comments much more than focus group scripted speeches.
Same here. I actually get a negative physical reaction as well as a mental one. Even seeing their photos.
I couldn’t watch the entire speech but did anyone also notice that the word “world” was used more than the word “country”.
See #7. She did honor her mom as well.
And don't tell me it's personal, he is running to be my President, he has no privacy.
Anyone count the number of times yesterday and last night these speakers said “God”? The Pledge does not count as one.
When she said “That’s why I love America”, it made no sense in the context. And Barack didn’t even know what city he was in...until his daughter asked him again. With the way he bumbled around trying to say good-night to them, he must use a teleprompter just to tuck them in.
“Power” = a thought-terminating cliche

...all the way across the continent in Hawaii...Maybe Caitlin Upton can help her with geography class.
Well stated. Apparently, God played no part in the Obamas’ rise in riches and position.
Wait, if they were to acknowledge God’s part in their promotions, they would turn bitter for things not being even better. And they’re trying to paint themselves as happy, not bitter.
That’s why they can’t mention God’s role.
Phew, glad I figured that out.

” Its a dumb thread. She paid tribute to both her parents.”
Respect your opinion that she did based on the reference in response 15.
With all the hype of “humanizing, showing how she and Barry are like us, I was watching /listening for the simpler things.
My take is she missed the opportunity to very directly speak to her mother, who is living, and was in the audience with by using six words.
“Thank You Mom, I Love You “
Call me old fashioned, but that’s what I would have done, and I think there are a few others who would have done the same.
P.S. The great thing about FR is we can state our opinions, see what others think, and learn from each other. Sometimes that will mean we agree, other times disagree. I think that’s where we are at on this topic.
She was too busy trying to make her dad Obama’s dad. Obama’s family is not the portrait they want out there, so MO had to try and portray her family as Obama’s — a strong black father being the key.
The 4 words MO didn’t use “I am an American”
When you have your chance at first lady, you can thank your mom.
