Blacks shouldn't necessarily take being called an Uncle Tom as an insult. The real Uncle Tom was actually an escaped Maryland slave named Josiah Henson, who was one of the pioneers of what became known as The Underground Railroad.

This man inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe when she wrote her novel. Being compared to Mr. Henson is being compared with a true American hero.
