Taliban turns lethal: 101 US deaths in Afghanistan
AP ^ | August 24, 2008 | JASON STRAZIUSO

KABUL, Afghanistan - Taliban insurgents once derided as a ragtag rabble unable to match U.S. troops have transformed into a fighting force _ one advanced enough to mount massive conventional attacks and claim American lives at a record pace.

The U.S. military suffered its 101st death of the year in Afghanistan last week when Sgt. 1st Class David J. Todd Jr., a 36-year-old from Marrero, La., died of gunfire wounds while helping train Afghan police in the northwest. The total number of U.S. dead last year _ 111 _ was a record itself and is likely to be surpassed.

Top U.S. generals, European presidents and analysts say the blame lies to the east, in militant sanctuaries in neighboring Pakistan. As long as those areas remain havens where fighters arm, train, recruit and plot increasingly sophisticated ambushes, the Afghan war will continue to sour.

"The U.S. is now losing the war against the Taliban," Anthony Cordesman, of the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, wrote in a report Thursday. A resurgent al-Qaida, which was harbored by the Taliban in the years before the Sept. 11 attacks, could soon follow, Cordesman warned.

Cordesman called for the U.S. to treat Pakistani territory as a combat zone if Pakistan does not act. "Pakistan may officially be an ally, but much of its conduct has effectively made it a major threat to U.S. strategic interests."

An influx of Chechen, Turkish, Uzbek and Arab fighters have helped increased the Taliban's military precision, including an ambush by 100 fighters last week that killed 10 French soldiers, and a rush on a U.S. outpost last month by 200 militants that killed nine Americans.

Chechens flooding into Afghanistan to fight NATO? Are they there perhaps at Russia's behest, like the Chechen animals Russia unleashed on Georgia? Will Russia come to the aid of these "Russian citizens" as well like they came to the aid of the South Ossetians?

“...one advanced enough to mount massive conventional attacks ..”

Wow.
That is some bullsh!t.
Calling massed attacks, where the taliban take serious casualties using weakly coordinated operations, “advanced”.

What will these geniuses think of next?

I believe that Obama is on the record for wanting to attack our ally Pakistan. Hey, I recognize that Pakistan is not much of a friend, but the "this is an illegal war" crowd ought to be real careful about urging attacks against an ally.

Now that they lost their propaganda war over Iraq, the Left will set it sights on defeat and retreat from Afganistan.

Asso Propaganda at it worst

Jimmy Carter 2.0. Jimma loved to sell our our allies and play kissy face with our foes. Obama is just a black Jimmy Carter.

Caught my eye. That’s my old hometown. Nice little area just outside of New Orleans. Lots of friendly blue-collar folks. Of course I moved out at 8 years old.

AP still hasn’t gotten over losing in Iraq. Yep, we’ve lost a hundred troopers in Afghanistan this year. Wonder how many the Taliban have lost? Who’s losing again?

When we were focused on Iraq, the Left said that we were misguided -- the REAL war was in Afghanistan, and that's where we ought to have made the effort.

Now, of course, that we will be focusing on Afghanistan, the Left will be pushing for a complete retreat because the war is an utter failure.

The lesson of Vietnam is that you cannot win if you allow the enemy a sanctuary into which you cannot chase them, and from which they can attack you at a time and place of their choosing

We have to take out the Pakistan sanctuaries

In World War II, it was understood by EVERYONE that disclosing casualties to the enemy was treason.

That’s what I thought too!!! Fricken reporters sending my stomach into my throat like that. 101 of our troops is sad and a terrible loss. But the gains that have been made because of their sacrifices have been huge.

My father was on a ship that was torpedoed on Christmas Eve 1944 off of Cherbourg, France. 800 men died. It didn't even make the newsreels.

101 volunteer heroes have died in Afghanistan freeing more than 20 million people. Our Civil War freed 4 million at the cost of hundreds of thousands dead. Our losses are terrible but tiny

We don’t have to lose anything. We just have to be willing to do what it takes to win.

So we know that the US suffered 101 casualties. How many Taliban did we kill in the same time period? The AP didn’t see fit to include that information.

The AP shows why people do not trust or believe them much anymore. Their headline and initial statement make one believe that the US just got hit with a massive 101 slaughter and THATS what they want. They wish for high numbers of American dead to justify their world view and then to make sure that they foment world opinion against us as well as inflate the capability of the Talobama’s (oops, Freudian slip ;)

Anybody know who "derided" the Taliban as a "ragtag rabble unable to match US troops?"

I don't either... this guy made it up.

Been saying the same for at least since the 2nd Bush Admin started.

If these tribal areas are “lawless” and not under control of the Pakistan government then they are fair game.

Even in Vietnam there was no pretense of some area being a lawless sanctuary.

The writer of this article seems to have orgasmic joy at announcing the deaths. During the pre-surge years my news browser would fairly shout out the numbers of soldiers and civilians killed by the terrorists in Iraq. They would NEVER! list the amount of the enemy dead.
