On August 2, 2007, after the "surge" counter-insurgency strategy in Iraq was already yielding reported signs of success, Joe Biden - who was running for President - posted on YouTube a campaign video which included clips from his speech from the floor of the Senate, denouncing the "surge" and predicting its utter failure.
Here's are Biden's words (on the video, go to the 3 minute mark):
"The question is do we continue - do we continue - to send our kids into the middle of a meat grinder, based on a policy that is fundamentally flawed. We predicted there would be a civil war if we didn't gain control. Surprise, surprise, surprise.
This is a cycle of self-sustaining sectarian violence that 20 thousand, 30 thousand, 50 thousand, 100 thousand Americans will not be able to stop. Did anybody on this floor, did anybody count on the utter incompetence of this administration when they were given the authority they were given? Absolute incompetence! I stood on this floor 3 years ago, saying we needed another 100 thousand troops, before the sectarian violence became self-sustaining, and warned - as others did - once it did, all the kings horses and all the kings men could not hold that country together..."
False.
Bad judgment.
And spoken with that clownish pomposity which is quintessential "plugs" Biden.
I just realized that unless you have fairly fast broadband - faster than my DSL - anyone interested will have to suffer through a minute or 2 of Biden before they can get to the 3 minute mark.
Sorry about that.
Biden still has a fallback plan for Iraq.
Apartheid.
Reports from Iraq are that they are deeply disappointed in Obama’s choice for veep.
The eurotrash might be delighted but they’re irrelevant, IMO.
"I think that the only reason Clarence Thomas is on the Court is because he is black.""I don't believe he could have won had he been white."
I’ve never understood the Dems love affair with putting massive numbers of troops into the Afghanistan “meat grinder”.
1.The Afghans historically have hated and fought against foreigners.
2. Afghanistan is not nearly as strategic a country as Iraq. Its location is remote, influence in world and Near East events is minimal.
3. It is important that Iraq’s oil production be kept on the world market and improved as made possible by maintaining a relative peaceful environment there.
4. Afghanistan has no strategic resources. You could put a fence around the country and no one would know or care.
Biden’s plan to partition Iraq was incredibly ill-informed. He based it on the urban legend that all the Kurds live in the north, all the Sunnis in the middle and all the Shiites in the south.
The reality is something different. MOST of the Kurds live in the north, MOST of the Sunnis live in the middle and MOST of the Shiites live in the south.
MOST is not ALL and Biden’s plan would involve the necessity to relocate tens of thousands of Iraqis into their ethno-religious zones. A recipe for further conflict and misery.
