Rendell: Obama coverage was embarrassing
politico ^

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell was supposed to give “closing remarks” during this afternoon’s Shorenstein Center-sponsored panel discussion with all three Sunday show moderators — NBC’s Tom Brokaw, ABC’s George Stephanopoulous and CBS’s Bob Schieffer — but instead, he opened up a can of worms about bias in 2008 election coverage

"Ladies and gentleman, the coverage of Barack Obama was embarrassing," said Rendell, in the ballroom at Denver's Brown Palace Hotel. "It was embarrassing."

Rendell, an ardent Hillary Rodham Clinton supporter during the primaries, now backs Obama in the general election. Brokaw and Rendell began debating campaign coverage, including the on-air comments by Lee Cowan, and when MSNBC came up, Rendell went after the cable network.

“At that point, PBS’s Judy Woodruff, who was moderating the moderators event, said: “Why don’t we let Governor Rendell sit down.””

Judy Woodruff? Didn’t she get canned by CNN?

“That was met with applause from the crowd of big-time media figures, which included Arianna Huffington, Gwen Ifill, Al Hunt, and Chuck Todd.”

Big-time media figures? Arrianna Huffington, Gwen Ifill...? Big time? More like small time...losers?

Yeah, but it only applies to his favored Democrat. There is not media bias against Republicans. He just discovered this during the Hillary!/Obama run-off? Unevenly applied objectivity on Rendell’s part?

Gwen Ifill, the “moderator” of the VP debate? No bias there.

I love to hear Dems squeal. For years the Clintons had special treatment from the media. CNN was called Clinton News Network on FR and other sites. I’m not saying that the coverage of Obama wasn’t fair or equal, but the Clintons got their comeuppance from the media they once had in their back pocket. The Toons are known for using people and then throwing them aside. This time they were the ones who got tossed. And I love it.

All you have to do, is read the democrat/liberal blogs, and see the media headlines to know, they are not really happy with Obama’s pick.

My local (and very liberal paper) had an amazing headline today. Basically it said “Obama take safe pick with Biden”. The sub-headline said “Biden goes against Obama’s message of change”. Frankly I was stunned that they wouldn’t try to at least spin it positively.

Short term, Biden probably doesn’t hurt or help much. Long term, I don’t see him helping. But long term, Biden has the potential to hurt Obama. Biden has such a rich history that will be used against them. And he is a time bomb waiting to go off. I could see Obama having to dump him by Mid-October.

Will history repeat? Will we have a "I'm behind Biden 1000%" followed a few weeks later by tossing him under the bus? Is Biden the next Eagleton?

Following Elizabeth Edwards’ live televised phone confrontation with conservative columnist Ann Coulter on MSNBC, in which she asked Coulter to stop making personal attacks on her husband, Hardball host Chris Matthews appeared on the Today Show to give his thoughts.

“Ann Coulter’s one of those people who believes that Iraq attacked us on 9/11 ... she also believes that we found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, so there’s always going to be people off to the right or to the left that very different opinions than the rest of us,” said Matthews. “She obviously believes that she can take these shots at the Edwards family and that’s part of the political discourse.”

“I think a lot of relatively boring guys like to go around carrying her books, to be honest with you,” he continued, saying that Coulter is a “brilliant writer” who “knows how to enrage.”

“Unfortunately, you’re dealing with a real life situation with Ann Edwards’ [sic] medical challenges, which we all know about, and the fact that they did lose their son, Wade, and you don’t make jokes about those things in polite society,” he said.

When asked if the Edwards camp should respond, Matthews replied, “My hunch is, that in human terms, Elizabeth Edwards has won this round.”

The following video is from NBC’s Today Show, broadcast on June 27.

*******

I don’t think Ann Coulter said anything about Elizabeth’s cancer or their dead son Wade.

I wonder if Chrissy would like to tell us if he is still in love with the Edwards family.

I wonder if this conversation was during John Edwards’ affair with Rielle Hunter and Elizabeth knew about it and was defending the cheater?!

Anyway, Chrissy Matthews’ set up Ann Coulter by not telling her Elizabeth Edwards was calling in.

*******

Chris Matthews: You know who’s on the line? Somebody to respond to what you said Edwards yesterday morning — Elizabeth Edwards. She wanted to call in today we said she could. Elizabeth Edwards go on the line you’re on the line with Ann Coulter

Elizabeth Edwards: Hello, Chris.

Matthews: You wanna say something directly to the person who’s with me?

Edwards: I’m calling you … in the South when someone does something that displeases us, we wanna ask them politely to stop doing it. Uh - I’d like to ask Ann Coulter — if she wants to debate on issues, on positions — we certainly disagree with nearly everything she said on your show today — but uh it’s quite another matter for these personal attacks that the things she has said over the years not just about John but about other candidates. It lowers our political dialogue precisely at the time that we need to raise it. So I want to use the opportunity … to ask her politely stop the personal attacks.

Ann Coulter: OK, so I made a joke — let’s see six months ago — and as you point out they’ve been raising money off of it for six months since then.

Matthews: This is yesterday morning, what you said about him.

Coulter: I didn’t say anything about him actually either time.

Edwards: Ann, you know that’s not true. And once more its been going on for sometime.

Coulter: I don’t mind you trying to raise money. I mean it’s better this than giving $50,000 speeches to the poor.

Edwards: I’m asking you.

Coulter: Just to use my name on the Web pages…

Edwards: I’m asking you politely…

Coulter: … but as for a debate with me, um yeah, sure. Yeah, we’ll have a debate

Edwards: I’m asking you politely to stop personal attacks.

Coulter: How bout you stop raising money on the Web page then?

Edwards: It didn’t start it did not...

Coulter: No you don’t have cause I don’t mind

Edwards: It did not start with that you had a column a number of years ago

Coulter: OK, great the wife of a presidential candidate is calling in asking me to stop speaking...

Matthews: Let her finish the point...

Coulter: You’re asking me to stop speaking, stop writing columns, stop writing your books.

Matthews: OK, Ann. Please.

Coulter: OK

Edwards: You wrote a column a couple years ago which made fun of the moment of Charlie Dean’s death, and suggested that my husband had a bumper sticker on the back of his car that said ask me about my dead son. This is not legitimate political dialogue.

Coulter: That’s now three years ago —

Edwards: It debases political dialogue. It drives people away from the process. We can’t have a debate about issues if you’re using this kind of language.

Coulter: Yeah why isn’t John Edwards making this call?

Matthews: Well do you want to respond and we’ll end this conversation?

Edwards: I haven’t talked to John about this call.

Coulter: This is just another attempt for –

Edwards: I’m making this call as a mother. I’m the mother of that boy who died. My children participate — these young people behind you are the age of my children. You’re asking them to participate in a dialogue that’s based on hatefulness and ugliness instead of on the issues and I don’t think that’s serving them or this country very well.

[Applause from the crowd]

Matthews: Thank you very much Elizabeth Edwards. (Turning to Coulter) Do you want to — you have all the time in the world to respond.

Coulter: I think we heard all we need to hear. The wife of a presidential candidate is asking me to stop speaking. No.

Remember election night 2000, when Rendell went on air
and said that Gore should be a man and just concede to GW and not ask for a recount ?
About an hour later, Rendell reappeared on tv looking like he had been taken to the woodshed
and suddenly changed his tune saying that Gore should absolutely demand a recount.
Maybe now he’s not so afraid of MSNBC or The Onanism.
