The Crackdown to Come
By WILLY LAM
FROM THE WALL STREET JOURNAL ASIA
August 22, 2008
Not only have the Olympics failed to act as a catalyst for political liberalization in China, but the regime's pre-Olympics security buildup looks set to enable the government to crack down as hard as ever on dissent after the Games are over. In line with the time-honored Chinese tradition of "taking revenge after the autumn harvest," police and military authorities are planning major reprisals against a host of troublemakers.
Punitive action has begun even before the athletes and the estimated 400,000 foreign tourists leave town. Remember the "protest zones" that Beijing authorities set up in three local parks as testimony of the regime's "new openness"? According to international human rights watchdogs, several activists who have applied to hold protests have been harassed and detained. They include two Beijing petitioners, Wu Dianyuan and Wang Xiuying, who were last week sentenced to a one-year term of "re-education through labor." Mr. Wu and Ms. Wang's crime: repeatedly petitioning the authorities for having been wrongfully evicted from their Beijing homes seven years ago.
Indeed, a good number of the strategies and institutions put into place to ensure a fail-safe Olympics are here to stay.

Entire proviences water supplies and electricity were diverted to Beijing.
The deathtoll from holding these games will never completely be known.
Great job by the IOC for staging the biggest farce of an olympics ever. The chinese are staging 12 year old girls in the gymnastic cometitions and throwing 70 year old women into gulags.
The only thing the IOC complained about during the whole games was the Jamaicain sprinter celebrating too much after his victories. Unreal.

I believe the IOC wants to promote the fantasy of all civilizations being equal and totalitarianism as legitimate as democracy.
Which is why I didn’t watch one minute of any of these Games. I won’t swallow the KoolAid of the IOC, NBC, their advertisers and particularly the Chicoms

That's why I haven't turned my TV on to NBC or gone to the Olympics video website since these games started. Of course I'm interested in the athletics, but I won't support China.
What is it about tyrannies and being a nation in collective jerkdom?

that may all be true, however with the influx of thousands of people from he free world, moving around,in conversation with Chinese, even their die-hard commies, establishing relationships, you can be assures seeds have been planted and, in time, will bear fruit.

I guess it must be our attempt to see the good in others that causes us to trust the lies of Communists and Dictators.
The new motto for those in our government that make such decisions should be stuck on stupid or stupid is as stupid does.

There were 4 days of pouring rain with thunder and lightnings. Many games had to be delayed. Some games were even played at 3am in the morning(for example, tennis.) However, because of such rain, air quality was reportedly better than expected.

I emailed that link and the pic to everyone on my email list just in case the missed it. Unfortunately I was not allowed to email it to an old friend of 56 years, she is a Democrat and intends to vote Democrat no matter who the candidate it. I was going to tell her she was obviously stuck on stupid but figure it would be a waste of bandwidth.

I know I certainly haven't seen or heard any.

The Chicoms even renamed Michael Phelps, calling him a pussy. Don’t think for a minute the state translaters didn’t know what they were doing when they declared his name in Chinese to be “Maikeer Feierpusi”.

I told her I hadn’t seen any, then she went to bed, and I sat up all night searching the Internet for reports.
She said it was the best sleep she’s had in ages, what with not having to fight me for the covers, nor being disturbed by my night thrashings.
Probably the worst thing that could have happened, because it might give her i.d.e.a.s., especially if she starts watching TV-Land when I’m not around, and sees how all those old TV married couples had twin beds....

Queen sized beds are what a guy buys when she gets cranky once in a while, like the "once a month" virus. King sized beds are what a guy buys when she gets cranky more often than that but still likes to cuddle unexpectedly, say at 3:00 am. Twin beds are for when the dog is willing to sleep on your feet.

Well, you - and GWB (for that matter) - can complain about the Chinese government all you want.
Point being is that they're not going to change the demeanor of their domestic policies.
Look, the Chinese have lived under some form of dictatorship for centuries - which is, ostensibly, what the majority of the population wants.
