Reid Statement On Reports Of Agreement To Withdraw U.S. Combat Troops From Iraq By End Of 2011

Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today in response to press reports that U.S. and Iraqi negotiators are close to agreeing to withdraw U.S. combat forces from Iraq by the end of 2011:

“While the Administration has spent the last two years doing everything in its power to block a change in course that would made America more secure, it appears the Bush Administration is finally inching toward adopting key elements of the strategy long advocated by Senate Democrats on Iraq – including a timeline for redeploying U.S. troops in order to incentivize the Iraqis to take responsibility for their own country.

“That John McCain and Congressional Republicans continue to oppose this course shows just how out of touch they are with today’s challenges. Such a change in strategy, as Senator Obama and other Congressional Democrats have long advocated, is absolutely critical to restoring America’s strength, improving the situation in Afghanistan and returning to the hunt for Bin Laden.

“It is also disturbing to read press reports that suggest that the Iraqis would prefer Senator Obama’s 2010 timeline, but the Bush Administration is insisting on a longer, 2011 timeline. Above all, the U.S. Congress must see the text of this agreement, which still has many unresolved issues, before we can make any final judgments on this agreement.”

Until I read the agreement myself, I won’t believe anything from just about anyone. The Lefties might as well settle down, because we won’t be completely withdrawing. Maliki isn’t that stupid.

Harry Reid is beyond surrendercat. Waste of oxygen.

Democrats to Press Bush to Reduce Troops in Iraq

By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG and MARK MAZZETTI
Published: November 12, 2006
WASHINGTON, Nov. 12 — Leading Senate Democrats vowed today to use their new majority in Congress to press for troop reductions in Iraq within a matter of months, stepping up pressure on the administration just as President Bush is to be interviewed by a bipartisan panel examining future strategy for the war.

The Democrats — the incoming majority leader, Senator Harry Reid; the incoming Armed Services Committee chairman, Senator Carl Levin; and the incoming Foreign Relations Committee chairman, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. — said a phased redeployment of troops would be their top priority when the new Congress convenes in January, even before investigating the conduct of the war.

“We need to begin a phased redeployment of forces from Iraq in four to six months,” Senator Levin, of Michigan, said on the ABC News program “This Week.” Later, in a telephone interview, he added, “The point of this is to signal to the Iraqis that the open-ended commitment is over and that they are going to have to solve their own problems.”

that was their boast. They wouldn’t know an actual plan if it smacked them in the face.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A draft agreement between the United States and Iraq contains no fixed dates for U.S. forces to withdraw, but Iraq would like combat troops out by the end of 2011, government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said on Thursday.

“The draft does not contain definite dates,” Dabbagh said.

Whenever I see anything that claims to be a quote from Harry Reid, I always have to triple-check whether it’s satire or not. It’s seriously very hard to tell just from the quote.

While it was the strategy long advocated by Senate Democrats, YOU pickle-puss and your ilk has nothing to do with it.

Bush has always stayed on course, so quit trying to take credit for something YOU didn’t not do.

including a timeline for redeploying U.S. troops in order to incentivize the Iraqis to take responsibility for their own country.

Except that the 2011 timeline, if implemented, will be at the urging of Iraq, not an attempt by us to force Iraq to "take responsibility". The Democrats are insulting the Iraqi people and their government by suggesting still that Iraq isn't doing it's job and that we need to threaten them like a petulant child.

In contrast, Bush is bargaining a real agreement between allies, based on the needs of the Iraqi government AND our own needs. Thus we might want troops in longer than they want, because it's in our best interest, but in no case are we trying to scare them with a threatened pull-out, which was the Democratic plan.

The Democrats often try to scare our allies into behaving. Remember Jimmy Carter trying to scare our allies in Iran -- instead of getting what he wanted, he drove the country into the hands of the extremists, who were happy to take advantage, and create the single biggest threat to peace in our world today.

The Middle east turmoil -- brought to you by Democrats who think people can be threatened into doing whatever they want.
