Georgian President grateful for Poland’s help

Created: 22.08.2008 12:20

President Saakashvili of Georgia expressed gratitude on Polish Radio this morning to President Lech Kaczynski and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski for their visit to Tbilisi during the war with Russia.

President Mikhail Saakashvili told Polish Radio and other Western media in an eight minute interview on Friday that President Kaczynski and FM Sikorski’s Georgian visit after the outbreak of military action in South Ossetia, “was an act of great courage” on their part and he was grateful for that.

"These people took a great risk,” said Saakashvili and explained that their trip to Georgia might have provoked Russian military intervention in their country as well.

When asked if he regretted any of the decisions he had made in events leading up the war – he has been criticised for falling into a trap laid by Moscow when he sent troops into South Ossetia - Mikhail Saakashvili said that he did not, because Russia would have invaded Georgia anyway. He quoted a Russia general who had said that the Russian army “had waited for an order since June 15 and they were getting impatient”.

President Saakashvili also said that Russia was “convinced that the West would be afraid of it and it could manipulate“ the western world. He revealed that Vladimir Putin once asked him directly if he thought Europe would come to Georgia’s rescue in the Caucasus.

Mikhail Saakashvili said that presidents change, but Georgia had to remain independent.

“The Russians know that as long as I am an in power, Georgia will stay independent”, the President told Polish Radio.

Too bad they can’t find a second to thank the good ole USA. What selfish people.

Trust me, the Georgians are far from selfish people. And I have email every day almost from Georgians who are thankful for all we have done for them.

I guess you missed the thread where the Georgians got up in the middle of the night to go to the airport and greet the first plane with aid. They were flying both US and Georgian flags.
