Obama Stops Advertising in Red Battleground States
Fox News ^ | 8-22-08 | Carl Cameron

Posted on 08/22/2008 1:07:52 PM PDT by frankjr

Barack Obama’s presidential campaign has put the brakes on ads that were running in seven states carried by the GOP in the 2004 presidential election, FOX News has learned.

Of the seven states — including Alaska, Georgia, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota — Florida and Virginia are considered key battlegrounds this year. Obama’s decision to stop advertising in those states is raising eyebrows.

Either Obama has those states locked up or the 57 state strategy is not working.

Interesting. Just a few weeks ago some pundits were saying that North Dakota was in play for Obama.

Is Obama giving up already in Virginia and Florida? This would be significant.

What the heck is up with Montana? I've seen a couple of maps showing it in play, including Rove's prediction map on H&C.

Didn't Bush win Montana twice by double digits?

I would suspect they will save their money in those states for 10 days then do a poll post convention and decide which states to go after.

Too bad, I was hoping they would waste money going after pipe dreams.

I had to excerpt, but the full article says the Obama team is saying it is just a temporary suspension due to the upcoming convention.

But it does seem strange that since Obama has been coming down in the polls, now is probably not the best time to pull advertising. But hey, I’m no strategist.

Obambi probably takes Iowa and New Mexico back for the RATs. Past that, his best chance to flip a state is either Colorado or Ohio.

He has been trailing in both recently, and of course he also can't afford to lose any of the Kerry states that have been getting closer and closer except possibly New Hampshire. If he manages to lose a place like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin or Minnesota, his odds of becoming POTUS are exceedingly small.

The one thing I can't understand is given the huge amount of money he has available, why is he pulling back anywhere?

I have a suspicion that Obama has a lot less $ than people think. Remember 2004, when everyone thought that Dean was bringing in tons of $ (also from the Internet) and suddenly there was none? They may be counting pledges, which is not the same as $ in hand.

Frankly, I do not think he can win Fl and Va, which they are supposedly focused on as their swing states. Virginia could be in play for them only if Kaine is picked as a running mate...which may not be in the cards.

Well with the convention coming up, they figure it’s like a four day long infomercial.

Then again, how many people will watch the convention? The most coverage will be the sound bites of speeches that people see on the news.

Remember in the old days, the broadcast networks prided themselves on their “gavel to gavel” coverage of the conventions. I can see though, that nothing really newsworthy happens at these conventions anymore. It’s all pre-scripted.

Unless the Clintons pull off a coup somehow in Denver and get Hillary the nomination, there will be nothing newsworthy. Obama’s speech at Invesco Mile High will be repeats of his hope and change and “this is our time” speeches. There will just be more noise as 75,000+ people have an Obamagasm.

I don’t know where I saw it, maybe NRO - their campaign blog, that he has been spending it almost as soon as it comes in, compared to all the free ads McCain gets afterupsetting precious Obambi, who then whines about it forever. He ran ads in places I was surprised to see them, and so early too.

Do campaign finance laws require him to keep his primary money and his general election money separate? If so, he might be running out of primary money and isn't allowed to tap into the general money until next Thursday when he (or Hillary if the great back stab happens) is officially the nominee. We'll see whether the ads come back then.

I think McCain is in a similar situation, but he might have problems spending all of his primary money and he absolutely has to keep it separate because he's accepting federal campaign money for the general election.

It appears that McCain and Obama are actually much closer in available cash then the collection numbers would indicate.

Although Obama raises twice as much in personal contributions as McCain does the RNC greatly out raises the DNC and when the amounts raised by each are combined they are almost equal.

However the campaign infrastructure of the Obama campaign is HUGE and the RNC can pay most of that expense for McCain and leave him to spend almost all of his donor contributions on advertising. The DNC having so much less money cannot help out to the extent the RNC can so Obama’s campaign must kick in donors cash to fund operations.

Also despite the good month he had in July, the campaign may be seeing a precipitous drop off in donor cash this month. It would be unusual to see poll numbers dropping and not have it accompanied by a drop in contributions.

No one gets on the dropped list. If he drops more states that will just give him more time and money to focus on Ohio and that's the last thing I want.

"Obama was going to take Montana, North Dakota, "

Obama's people fooled themselves when they had great success in the caucus states by recruiting young star-struck college freshmen to take a day off classes and make a fuss for him. Ordinary working folk often cannot make time for the caucuses and so they were ripe for manipulation and electoral manipulation is Obama's one area of serious expertise.

In they excitement of winning IA MT ND and Colorado among others, they mistook the caucus excitement as across the state support for Obama. I'm here in Colorado, and there is absolutely no way Obama can carry Colorado, believe me.

McCain would have to be found performing black market abortions on the weekends before he could lose.

Montana has only 400 K people, so if 10,000 illegals and 10,000 fags from kalifornia move into the state, the color turns from red to purple to puke blue.
