He has always been on the so-called "shortlist," but Mitt Romney's chances seem to have brightened in the past week as the economy continues to hold the top issue slot on the campaign trail. Key McCain allies report that Romney's background as an economically driven governor and his popularity among the moderate GOP base are helping him keep pace with others on the shortlist.
"I could be wrong, but I bet he picks Romney," said a McCain finance adviser and major fundraiser. "He energizes the base. Romney was clearly the No. 2 pick and would excite a lot of traditional Republicans who think McCain is too much of a maverick," the adviser E-mailed. "These voters will also get behind the ticket because, win or lose, they will see it as a setup for Romney in 2012; most Republicans have barely heard about most of the other names that have been bandied about. They all know Romney. Second, Romney is the most Reaganesque of the bunch, and the party is searching for any way it can find to get back to the winning days of the Reagan approach. He's a former governor, like Reagan, who has ruled over a population more liberal than he is and he did it well. Third, McCain needs an economic conservative to burnish his credentials on restoring health back to the economy. Romney fits there. Fourth, Romney is already vetted. He communicates and campaigns well, will do what he's told tirelessly. He has been campaigning forcefully for McCain. Fifth, he looks and acts like he could be president, and that's 95 percent of the job of a credible VP candidate. And sixth, and most importantly, McCain needs to nail Colorado (Mormons) and Michigan (home state) for sure as they are in the top four critical swing states. Romney fits both bills."
Meanwhile, another GOP economic brain, Rob Portman, the former Ohio congressman and Bush budget and trade czar, says he's not in contention. He E-mails me: "I do not believe it is me and I am happy being home. I am also happy to be doing surrogate appearances for the campaign and will keep doing them when asked."
McCain/Romney.
Smells like...VICTORY!
Romney’s the one I’d like to see McCain pick, but I won’t believe it until I see it. Hope McCain surprises me.
I could vote for Romney. Better than some of the other names that have been floated and maybe not as good as some...but if McCain really wants to make a play for the Hillary voters, with her not in contention for the VP slot, he’ll pick Palin.
Nothing would energize me more than a Romney VP selection. I am on pins and needles waiting for the good news.
“I could vote for Romney. Better than some of the other names that have been floated and maybe not as good as some...but if McCain really wants to make a play for the Hillary voters, with her not in contention for the VP slot, hell pick Palin.”
Yeah, Romney’s good, though I’m not sure how that will go well with some people.... Romney’s better than a pro-abortion candidate, though....
I think Palin would be an amazing VP!!!!!!
Uhhhh. I don’t see him “energizing” the base. He gave new meaning to the term flip flop and most of the party hopes
he never runs again. Only his few die hard fans want to see him set up for a future run. I am sure all of them will be posting what wonderful news this is , on this thread.
And Flip Romney finished 3rd , not second , in the primaries overall.

She'd perk things up but she's not actually eligible for the office.
I can’t think of a single person on both sides that is a slam dunk. Every choice has a list of “buts”

Conservatives could hold their nose for Romney since they are already holding it for Mccain. Romney would nail down
Colorado and much of the west where Mormans live. He could
put MI in play too ... but it would be nose holding time.
Romeny is a pro-abort northeast liberal...

Portman seems to rilly rilly rilly like Clinton...
Que the Romney haters. 4, 3, 2, 1, wait for it,... wait for it.... go
LOL.
Cold in that room, aint it? Of course Hillary does chill down a room.
I wouldn’t mind getting that close to them, er, her.
“Que the Romney haters.”
A little Spanglish??
Talk about a sick joke.
Ping
Oooops change that to “Cue”
“Talk about a sick joke.”
No joke at all. They both took some liberal stands as governors that they later flipped on as presidential candidates. Such as the bill Reagan signed that expanded legal abortion rights in California.
Cases where a candidate took one stand when running for state office, then another when running for national office, are common.
That’s the best fairy tale I’ve ever heard ...
Romney is a good man with a wonderful family.
Every time I get even a little excited about McCain such as his recent rhetoric concerning the new Russian thuggery, he then promptly never disappoints with his ability to underwhelm. Given some of the young conservative names bandied about then to get smacked with Romney. What a downer.
“Thats the best fairy tale Ive ever heard ...”
If you think that’s a fairy tale, then you have a lot to learn.
Here’s the “National Review” take on Reagan’s signing the Therapeutic Abortion Act in California in 1967:

Romney does exactly NOTHING to improve my chances of voting for McCain. In fact, for me it is a negative. It suggests McCain lacks judgement, as did his flirtation with the notion of nominating Joe Lieberman.
I am sorry, I just don’t trust him..... he is a Liberal in hiding.
He is a lot more conservative than McCain.
Other than has his reasoned switch on abortion what specific issue can you cite that causes you to distrust him ? He has an impeccable and clean personal life and a wonderful family with lots of long term friends and business partners. Not the resume of an untrustworthy person. He has also not reached across the aisle for 25 years like McCain. I trust Romney a lot more than McCain.
Romney’s background as an economically driven governor and his popularity among the moderate GOP base
at the expense of the conservative...especially social conservative base.
Mitt “make every promise you have to” Romney flips
positions just as quick as the wind changes course.
Mitt is a sleazy politician that will say or do anything to get elected.
Mitt is no Reagan , more like a faithful Bill Clinton.
hillary was first!
Ya she do........she's got her headlights on ;-)
If you want to save yourself the trouble, the last “Sources Say Romney” thread is just over 700 posts since last night.
I don’t think anyone on that thread has been suspended yet - let’s see how this one goes.
Good Luck.

The only issue I can think is his Mormonism which I suspect is the real reason for opposition to him. At an individual level I have not seen a cleaner politician in a long time.
Reagan’s record on abortion:
Early in 1967, the national debate on abortion was beginning. Democratic California state senator Anthony Beilenson introduced the “Therapeutic Abortion Act”, in an effort to reduce the number of “back-room abortions” performed in California.[51] The State Legislature sent the bill to Reagan’s desk where, after many days of indecision, he signed it.[54] About two million abortions would be performed as a result, most because of a provision in the bill allowing abortions for the well-being of the mother.[54] Reagan had been in office for only four months when he signed the bill, and stated that had he been more experienced as governor, it would not have been signed. After he recognized what he called the “consequences” of the bill, he announced that he was pro-life.[54] He maintained that position later in his political career, writing extensively about abortion.
Good points, all.
We also need to remember the VP’s will only go head to head in a debate one time, and we need someone who can take on Obama’s pick, and Romney is fully capable of doing that.
Harry Reid is more of a social conservative than Romney. But we’re all against him and it has nothing to do with the fact that he is a Mormon.
Truly, though, he would be wasted in the VP slot. You’re obviously thinking 2012 & ‘16, but there’s not much that a VP generally does.
Huckabee dropped out after he did, but in terms of electoral votes, Romney finished second.
Unlike Kennedy, Clinton and many others Romney has never worn his religion on his sleeve. He lives his religion and doesn’t flaunt it for all to see. I just don’t understand the preoccupation with him being a Mormon. Most of Congress should have the morals and family Mitt has.
I think that a lot of secular people who are strongly pro-life have been pro-choice in the past. What makes secular conservatives staunchly so, is, in my opinion, the constitutional angle that it is not for the fed. gov’t. to make laws for states.
I understand you do not like Romney and I have several issues with him as well but by equating him to Obama you are the one that comes across as a right wing moon bat.
