JAKARTA, Indonesia Hundreds of Christian theology students have been living in tents since a mob of angry Muslim neighbors stormed their campus last month wielding bamboo spears and hurling Molotov cocktails.

Stormed by former Obama classmates?
The religion of “peace” strikes again.
Coming soon to a nation near you. :)
Nice people. /sarc>
we can learn much from their tolerance of other faiths.. :)
HELP ME BARRY SOETERO!
People, this is what Islam does wherever it goes.
Mohammed invented this so-called "religion" during his days of drug abuse, murder, theft, rape, molestation, robbery, greed, vanity, brutality and other horrific acts.
There is NOTHING good in Islam. It is an absolute perversion of everything that God stands for!
To Indonesia, from America:
We’ll trade you two Muslims for each Christian. Deal?
(And if you act now, we’ll also throw in a border-jumping Mexican gang-banger!)

Jakarta ping!
Might not be just a religious thing.
“Christian lawmaker Karol Daniel Kadang accused property speculators of provoking last month’s incident to clear the land for more profitable use, after the school refused to sell out.”
Mohammed invented the religion to justify his most brutal desires.
Darwinists invented their religion to justify their godless lifestyles.
According to Islam, all the people of the world must choose:
Convert to Islam
Be enslaved and brutalized
Die.
Indonesian Collegiate hazing?
Nah, just those rascally muslims, at it again...
It’s really well past time to put an end to this islamic lunacy. Their insufferable lies and hard line intolerance of anything not of the faith are unfit to exist in a civilized world.
Oh dear, what was I saying about “civilised”? They’re a lovely bunch for 98% of the time and then every so often they take a collective leave of their senses, go on the rampage and then calm back down again.
It’s no surprise perhaps that one of the few words of Indonesian to make it into the English language is “amok”, they do like to run amok every so often.
It’s a bit of a cultural thing which unfortunately is all too often exploited by rather more sinister characters. It has long been a sore point among Arabs that the world’s largest Muslim nation is a wee bit too laid back and not really up for jihad, they’ve spent the last twenty years and millions of dollars trying to change that, unfortunately their efforts are beginning to bear fruit.
The ping wasn’t intended to put you on the spot, I just thought that as a local you might offer a bit of insight (which you did remarkably.)
Any thoughts on the land-grab aspect as mentioned in the prior comment?
In your opinion, is religion a (major) point of conflict?
I assume this isn’t a typical occurrence.
(I also wasn’t aware of the origin of ‘amok.’
It’s amazing the things you can learn on this site!)
Don’t worry you didn’t put me on the spot, I’m delighted to discuss Indonesia, and all its faults, with anyone interested.
As regards the ‘land grab’, that would not surprise me in the least, Indonesian society frequently has wheels within wheels and what looks like a simple event on the surface may have half a dozen intricately linked sub plots. However the religious element is clear here, there is no doubt that militant Islam is getting a toe-hold in Indonesia and the government is not being tough enough (in fairness they’ve done a very good job in cracking down on the actual terrorists).
It is easy to exploit religious tensions in what is a very heavily populated and racially diverse nation. Christianity is associated with wealthy people (often Chinese or people from outside the main island of Java). The poorer people who are invariably Muslim are easily whipped up by the neighbourhood thug who can use Islam to justify an attack on a Christian school or church which is accused of spreading out into their neighbourhood and proselytising.
In the old days under the dictator Suharto the government would have come down like a ton of bricks on Islamists, now we have a democracy and the leaders need the votes! Islam is a handy device to spin up some enthusiasm for your party but it is as we know it’s a tiger that you really don’t want to ride.
I wouldn’t want to be too gloomy about Indonesia’s prospects; it isn’t about to become a Talibanocracy any time soon. The important factor to remember about Indonesia is that even though it is a largely Muslim nation it’s not an Arab nation, it’s South East Asian, their cousins are the Filipinos and the Thais with all the charms and frustrations that go with those people. Islam is still fairly relaxed here and as the population, which is relatively young, get richer and more exposed to western influences in music and TV (God help them!) I don’t see militant Islam holding all that much appeal. Although it’s a moot point whether MTV is a more preferable influence for young people than religion.
Among the few other Indonesian (strictly speaking Malay) words in English would be Mata Hari, Sarong, Batik and Orang Utan and after that I’m pretty stumped.
