I believe he is a former football player that has often accompanied Condi at functions.

I googled his name and apparently he has died. If I remeber correctly there were photos of Condi and him at the Inauguration in 2005.

Video: (BEACH) VOLLEYBALL TEAM WINS GOLD, BLINDSIDES NBC WITH SHOUT-OUT TO (PRESIDENT) BUSH!
August 21, 2008 by Allahpundit

A palate cleanser by popular request; you’ll remember our heroines here from the Butt-Pat That Wasn’t. The official Olympics site has highlights of the match but this snippet had to be rescued from oblivion by Tivo. Exit question: Good lord — don’t they know who runs this network now?

Hi Snugs,

The football player that has escorted Condi on several occasions was Gene Washington. He is very distinguished looking. I remember Gene Upshaw’s name during the players strikes during past years. I’m sorry to hear about his passing so quickly.

I was watching the May-Walsh volleyball match the other night when they thanked the President. I was really surprised and very pleased.

It seems that NBC Really does not want anyone to see that Shout out to President Bush. Although the item is still listed on Hot Air, not even the link to 187 comments about the video works now (unless it is just a problem with my computer.)

Since I couldn’t see the video on Hot Air, I went to google to look for other reporting and found a point by point description of the match. The author worte a good story all the way to the last paragraph and then -— Wow! was all I could say.

“May and Walsh won their 108th consecutive match and became the most successful beach volleyball team of all time. May brought a vial of her mother’s ashes to scatter in the tournament sand. Then, strangely, Kerry Walsh exclaimed to an NBC reporter that she wanted to “thank President Bush for all that he does!””

“Not the best way to end the most amazing professional beach volleyball career in history, but as someone who’s not likely to ever win a gold medal, it was nice for me to know that nobody’s perfect...”

White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe briefs reporters, Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, in Crawford, Texas.

Gordon Johndroe: Good morning. The President had a rather full morning this morning, so let me run through it and then I'll be happy to take your questions.

The President started his day by recording the radio address; the topic is energy. The President urges Congress to work with him to expand domestic oil production and take meaningful steps now to address the pain caused by high energy prices.

He then heard from Secretary Rice on her trip to Baghdad and received an update from his national security team on the current situation in Iraq; that was by secure video. He then had his normal intelligence briefing after that, also by secure video. President Bush spoke to Prime Minister Maliki of Iraq. The two discussed the agreement we are currently working on with the Iraqis and agreed that our teams would continue those discussions.

After that, the President spoke by phone to French President Sarkozy. The President expressed his condolences to President Sarkozy and the people of France for the soldiers recently lost in Afghanistan. The two discussed President Sarkozy's recent trip to Afghanistan. They also shared assessments on the situation in Georgia. The two agreed that Russia is not in compliance and that Russia needs to come into compliance now.

Also, next week the President will return to Washington on Wednesday. On Friday, the President meets with the President of Tanzania in the Oval Office, and that evening the President will attend, at the United States Marine Corps Barracks in Washington, the Evening Parade.
