I wish Zell Miller had done this.
Nice to have the Senate back, though. Hopefully we do something with it. Like, I don’t know, ANWR, offshore drilling, nuclear power, that kind of thing.

It wouldn’t matter. The organizing resolution in Jan 07 gave the Dims control. At least that’s what I read back at the time.

We already had the Senate in 2004 when Zell Miller spoke, and gained on our thin majority in the ensuing election.
As for getting back the Senate, it sounds like a great idea, but who is to say that one of the RINOs might not just take Lieberman’s place? We know that Chaffee probably would have flipped, had he won reelection, and someone like Hagel, Collins, Snowe, or the like could easily jump over.

Controlling the Senate until November is more important than ideological party purity. Socialistic crap can be stopped dead in its tracks with McConnell as the majority leader instead of Reid.
To: pabianice
Other than being a foreign policy hawk Lieberman is a liberal. His ACU rating in 2007 was 8 (out of 100) -
Obama's was 7.
If he switches parties, Lieberman would find himself at odds with the GOP almost all the time, unless he somehow completely changes his politics.

Just what the republican party needs, another person too be called a RINO. That is exactly what the guy would be. He is pro abortion, pro gay marriage, pro illegals, you name it. He is simply a screaming liberal. Thus, a perfect RINO.

Lieberman doesn't need to switch party affiliations. He was defeated in the Democrat primary and won re-election as an independent. All he has to do to retire Harry Reid as majority leader is to announce he will now caucus with the Republicans.
I really don't think he will do it unless the Democrats try to retaliate for his endosement of McCain by taking away his committee assignments. What incentive is there to do so anyway given that the Democrats are likely to have an additional 4-6 senate seats in January 2009? Especially given that Connecticut is a strongly Democrat state?
I think Lieberman will simply let these rumors go unchallenged merely as a veiled threat to the Democrat leadership who needs to keep him in their caucus to keep power.
Of course, I would love to see Obama pick Harry Reid as vp as a consolation prize for Lieberman actually making the switch. But I'd also like to see Nancy Pelosi hang herself, and it ain't going to happen (at least not literally).
