Voters Want Barr In Debates
The Washington Times ^ | 8/20/08 | Ralph Z. Hallow

Posted on 08/20/2008 7:49:54 AM PDT by steve-b

A majority of voters say Libertarian Bob Barr, a potential spoiler for Republican John McCain's presidential hopes, should be included in the three presidential debates scheduled in the fall between Barack Obama and Mr. McCain, a recent Zogby poll says....

The online poll of 3,339 likely voters found that 55 percent of voters nationwide - including 50 percent of Republicans and 69 percent of independents and 52 percent of Democrats - want Mr. Barr, a Republican turned Libertarian, to participate in presidential debates...

Mr. Barr is sensitive to allegations that he is playing the same spoiler role for Republicans that Mr. Nader has been accused of playing for Democrats in the past.

"I view myself as a true and viable alternative to the other two parties," Mr. Barr said.

But Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, a Democrat who favors gun rights, sees an opening and recently held a telephone press conference organized by the Obama campaign to say that both major party candidates fall short in the eyes of gun-rights advocates.

"If guns are your primary issue, you're probably not going to like either of these guys," Mr. Schweitzer said, adding that in that case the best alternative was Mr. Barr - who won an A+ rating from the gun-rights lobby - "if you're absolutely not going to vote for McCain or Obama on guns."

Asked if Mr. Schweitzer, in suggesting Second Amendment defenders pull the lever for Mr. Barr, had done a "smart thing," Mr. Barr smiled and said, "They're very smart people in Montana. They have a very smart governor."...

I love how they spin this. The poll doesn't show that 55 percent of voters nationwide want him in, it shows 1836 people want him in the debate. He, like the 240+ other people who are running for President, has not met the criteria to be in the debates (I believe it is 6.5% polling). He is only polling around 2% nationally.

I don’t see Barr as being that much of a threat to McCain now, as he’s become a communist on the issue of global warming, jumped into bed with the ACLU, thrown the Iraq War under the bus, and sided with the russkies in their war on Georgia.

A vote for Barr is a vote for Obama. I don’t see any reason to support a spoiler.

On-line polls are worthless - let the real pollsters do a real poll and find out what the real (low) percentage is.

Barr is only polling 3% here in Georgia, his home state. That doesn’t translate to deserving a spot in the debates.

This is crap. Obama knows Mc Cain will crucify him in a one on one debate. If he can cloud the debate with other candidates it minimizes his loss. Look for Obama to try and wriggle out of debates by saying he wont debate Mc Cain without these fringe candidates.

ROTFLMAO!

I wonder what a real poll of likely voters would yield.

No one cares if Barr is in the debates.

The Libertarian party gets what - 1% of the vote for President? While I have voted for some of them at the local level, I’d have to say no to Barr - Barr, is not even on the ballot in all 50 states so cannot even come close.

Oh baloney...this is the Time's way of trying anything, anything to derail McCain now that he is in his stride.

My bet is that the vast majority of voters, if all (or even scientifically) polled, don't even know who Bob Barr is. And that will be apparent and evident on Election Day.

This is a bunch of his supporters flocking to and inundating an online poll which actually says nothing about voters nation wide.

And the Times knows it, otherwise they would have an equally hard push to get Nader in there. In fact, IMHO, it is likely that Nader will get a lot more votes than Barr...but the majority of them will come from the wrong side of the Time's dung heap.

This is a lame attempt by the MSM to ‘hide’ Obama during the Presidential Debates. Going one on one against McCain, Obama is going to stand out as an empty suit. If you mix it up with 3, 4, or 5 other candidates, you reduce the number of questions each candidate has to answer and create the potential to have arguments break out among the various candidates. The debate gets turned into a sideshow.

Neither barr nor nader stand a chance in this election. The only role either one can play is to take votes away from McCain or obamaboy. The way the media projects the polls just blows my mind.

But on the other hand every citizen has a right to vote for whomever they please. That one legged one arm baboon is slipping back into the picture.

LOL...Ridiculous you say? About as ridiculous as Barr and Nader being included in debates.

"I view myself as a true and viable alternative to the other two parties," Mr. Barr [lied].

Bob Barr.

You are the textbook LOSER!

You know that you will never, ever be president.

We, the American People (of both parties) just don't want you.

You know this.

So to make your worthless self feel important (and to get even with us for not wanting you) you willfully conspire to hand over a country to an America-hating Marxist out of sheer spite.

You are the neer-do-well in school who sabotages others' science projects, because you aren't good enough a student to create your own.

You are the arsonist who delights in burning down what others have and worked hard to create.

...true and viable alternative...?

Even in your twisted mind, you know this is a lie.

Ugh...

Correct. Third parties are spoilers, they dilute and can’t win. They detract from the real issue and cause those they are closest to in positions to lose a race. They can not win on their own and in the next 20-30 years I don’t foresee any third party supplanting one of the major parties. The two party system will remain possibly for another 100 years as a vast majority of people in this country are not fed-up enough with government to really change things.
