RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Democrat Barack Obama said Tuesday he will "need to win" in North Carolina in November, asking supporters to fight for the White House as both presidential candidates continue to open their wallets to compete in the state.
Obama and Republican rival John McCain have both been expanding staffs in North Carolina, underscoring the precariousness of polls in a state that hasn't voted for a Democratic presidential candidate in more than three decades.
"We've got to fight to make sure America gets back on track," Obama said. "I'm going to need to win North Carolina."

Obama used the Raleigh town hall to highlight his economic policies, arguing that ending the Iraq war could help provide billions for investment in the United States. And he said the nation can't drill its way out of its oil problem and instead needs to invest in alternative sources, such as solar and wind power and electric cars.

The North Carolina Republican party shot back with a Web video, saying his tax plan would injure small business and claiming he doesn't understand North Carolina's economy.

While Obama is hoping to compete in North Carolina, it appears he's lost one of his top surrogates: former rival John Edwards. The former North Carolina senator, recovering from his admission that he had an affair with a former campaign staffer, did not attend the Obama event on Tuesday like other Democratic leaders in the state.
Obama praised both Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, during a stop here in June. But he did not mention either by name Tuesday.

North Carolina now has the RAT run 'education' lottery which does cure stupidity. Hussein Obomber better concern himself where crime is out of control - like maybe Chicago...
One needn’t “remember Harvey Gannt” and bring race into it to realize that Obama will have a hard time winning NC. One need only remember John Edwards.
Yep. John Edwards was elected Senator in ‘98 with 51% of the vote. Part of the reason he decided to run for pres. in 2004 was because he knew it was a toss up as to whether he would get re-elected to the Senate.
Then, John Kerry made him his running mate. And the Kerry-Edwards ticket lost N.C. by a big margin. Obviously John Edwards on the ticket last time didn’t help at all in N.C. Kerry-Edwards only got 44% of the vote.
Who? Oh, yeah. Wasn't he caught with his pants down?
The guy with the pretty hair?
Glad to see Obambi wasting his time in NC.
He’ll win North Carolina in his dreams.
If Obama even gets close in NC, it would be a long long election night for McCain.
I just don’t see it happening.
NC has been turning left for some time. Don’t be surprised if it goes. Washington, Virgina and Maryland retired to there. Raleigh is left and the mountain region has been taken over by moonbats.
Just keep an eye on the Dole/Hagan senate race. If that starts to get tight, then Obama might have a shot. Ive seen the registration numbers in north carolina and the dems are finding dead people everywhere.
I was just out there last week and was surprised by all the O-Man bumper stickers I saw. I don’t recall seeing one for McCain.
Not in his wettest dreams.
A “well-rewarded” Jesse Helms is standing watch now.
Edwards getting tripped up made me think Helms asked God to trip up that colossal hypocrite.
Yeah right. Not near enough blacks living in NC to swing the state to Obambi.
I can help you win North Carolina. My media plan is executing and uniting TwoAmericas if not my two mamas. Any publicity is good publicity; any lovin' is good lovin'; take what you can get! Call me!
-John
Then, the Big O needs a running mate who knows North Carolina, who has planted his seed and grown roots in North Carolina. It can only be...
Obama-Edwards in 2008! Campaign slogan: We have 9 years in the Senate combined!
More than likely Obama loses NC but it may be close. NC doesnt have an effective GOP and it has been withering for years. The guv will go to the RAT and possibly Dole will lose.
Yep, I agree the gov stays Rat and Dole loses.
Dole will have only herself to blame.
ya think it may have something to do with bridges to nowhere and free medicare for illegals?
I live in NC and know a couple black get out the vote registration workers. Black registration is way up and they will bus them to the polls. Republicans need an exceptional
turn out. McCain, McCrory and Dole are not an easy sell.
I know Republicans who supported Richard Moore in the primary.
Not sure what they are doing now.
And don’t get me started on Dole. I have a feeling she is in deep trouble, even with Republicans.
Yes and the NIMBY attitude on off shore drilling.
All Dole wants from NC is campaign $$$$ and enough votes so she can stay in DC. My county GOP has taken her to task a few times in the last year with lttle good.
In order to win North Carolina B-mac MUST do all three of these things:
A) Hold ALL of the White votes frenchie got in 2004 - NOT A CHANCE!
B) Get 95% of the Black vote - sounds almost doable until you consider that zombie's most recent poll had his Black voter numbers so low that they were not even reported, just alluded to. In this case ANY slip would end the race.
C) Increase the Black turnout by 36% - those who have not been involved in a campaign need to understand that an increase of 6% is a PHELPSIAN feat, and 36% is impossible.
Enough said?
Given that Bush votes were 56+% in both ‘00 and ‘04, this would be a truly amazing result. I think SnObama should go for it, though.
