Barr stands with South Ossetia...(Barr On Putin's Side in This)
Independent Political Report ^
Posted on 08/19/2008 12:08:29 PM PDT by mnehring
“The Saakashvili government in Georgia made a foolish mistake by initiating hostilities in its breakaway province of South Ossetia,” says Libertarian Party presidential candidate Bob Barr in a press release entitled No Foreign Aid for Georgian War. “American taxpayers should not have to pay for that mistake. After all, they already are paying $10 billion a month for the administration’s mistaken invasion and occupation of Iraq. They cannot afford to pay the price for other people’s wars as well.”
In response to the press release, Liberty Maven says:
It is comforting to know that Barr is quick to point out what the press and the Bush administration seem to want to sweep under the rug: Georgia instigated this conflict. Even if the Russian response was disproportionate that fact remains.

Add one more to the Pat Buchanan pile supporting Putin and the Ruskies over our ally Georgia.

Bob Barr is still angry with Republicans over his loss of his House seat. Hence, he will do everything to make McCain lose the election.
Bob Barr - the infant denied.
Bob, take some Effexor or other anti-depressant and get over yourself.

Can you describe what Georgia did to “provoke” Putin into invading?
To: mnehrling
The Russian disinformation campaign at the beginning of hostilities was very effective...a lot of useful idiots have accepted their line.
I saw a report (Fox?) that an opposition politician in Georgia is blaming the conflict on the Georgian president. Same instincts as our Democrats but the stakes are higher for Georgia in this conflict than they are for the US in Iraq.
To: BGHater
Seems he is causing more problems for the US by throwing our ally under the bus and siding with an old enemy in this matter.

Georgia instigated this conflict. Even if the Russian response was disproportionate that fact remains.
Could you tell us the difference between Hitler declaring that Germans were being 'oppressed' in the Sudetenland, and Putin declaring that Russian ethnic groups were being 'oppressed' in South Ossetia?
Was Hitler likewise 'provoked'?

We have no business being allied with Georgia.
We would never tolerate Russian alliances on our doorstep. We have no strategic interest to defend over there. Neither Russia nor Georgia has clean hands in this affair, but our intrusion into the area is inflammatory and dangerous.

The US wouldn't have as many problems if we cut back on our Security Bailouts Across Europe.
We are seeing signs of that. We have kept Europe safe for years.
What have they done? They have spent their money on their socialism, welfare, and long vacations. Instead of reinvesting it into their Defenses and Military.
Putin sees them as weak. He is right. At some point they gotta learn to defend themselves.
We had Hurricane Katrina where thousands depended on the Gov’t for help. Now their is Hurricane Putin, same deal but, now Foreign Gov't turn to us for help instead of being prepared.

Georgia did not initiate hostilities.
Along abut August 1st they reacted to South Ossetian shelling of Georgian villages. On August 7th, after a cease fire had been called, they responded again after more shelling of Georgian villages.
Admittedly, that second response played directly into Russian hands (who I believe clearly insteigated and provoked the Georgian response) so the Russians could use it as a pretext to invade.
Who you going to believe...our allies, who have supported us in Iraq, who have tried to break away from the Russians...or a Russian puppet on a string?

Right on, but a little spicy fact: Ossetians are Iranina-related, neither ethnically nor linguistically linked to Russians. Thus Moscow’s flimsy “reasons” are even more invalid.

If we allowed this to fester, as we did once before when George Patton recommended that the 3rd Armored keep moving into Russia, we will simply end up with both feet in it as we did with Hitler.
Isolationism or non intervention did not work then, now or ever in this world.

The CIA World Fact-book lists a lot of strategic interests we have with Georgia. In addition to the pipeline, it is one of the major ports between Europe and Asia. We also have a
security pact (see Treaty) with Georgia which makes us Constitutionally authorized to honor (Article VI, Section 2).
