Stop making babies to reduce global warming

The other day, as a favor, I posted a scientific article from a friend of mine, Dr H. Harrister, PhD, who conclusively showed that fitter people have larger carbon footprints than do fatter people. You might remember Dr Harrister from his famous paper showing that zombie attacks will increase due to global warming.

Unfortunately, because of sloppiness on my part, several readers came to the conclusion that Dr Harrister, PhD's paper was satire. That is to say, a joke. Far from it. That paper was just as rigorous and valid as the dozens that now appear monthly in scientific, peer-reviewed journals the world over.

As evidence of that, we have the essay by John Guillebaud, PhD and Pip (yes, Pip) Haye, MD, in the very prestigious British Medical Journal. The title of their work "Population growth and climate change: Universal access to family planning should be the priority." For my slower readers, I emphasize that they use the familiar euphemism "family planning" for "contraceptives and abortion."

These eminent authorities start their editorial by claiming...

Reduce and control populations... it's in the communist doctrine... eco-terrorists also want to reduce man's existence on this planet. What a concept... if the commies really believe this junk then all leftists should kill themselves for the good of Mother Earth.

It may not have been satire, but it was certainly a joke. Well educated people are just as prone to stupidity as uneducated ones, and far more prone to using the alchemy of science to push their idealogical barrow.

I think he is joking as he says: That paper was just as rigorous and valid as the dozens that now appear monthly in scientific, peer-reviewed journals the world over.

And after reading the current article, he's right.

Shhhh. Liberals are already reproducing at a lower rate than conservatives.

If we can convince them to lower their rate even further as part of being “green”, it will only benefit us in the long-term.

Shhhhh. Pass it on.

Yes, let other countries mill out babies. Then they can coax their criminals to ‘cross’ here ‘unregistered’ and then they can vote to have a federal park land rush.

Libs may not be reproducing naturally, but they have their Xerox machines going at warp speed in our schools and universities. Exactly as planned in the little red book.

My parent’s fifth child, though his intelligence and industriousness, saves his employer several thousand times his own personal consumption of natural resources, year after year.

Somebody’s child is going to figure out how to break our dependence on fossil fuels.

Human beings solve problems. These people treat human beings as if they are the problem. One wonders why, if human beings are so destructive, one or the other of these economists does not immediately go to the top floor of his building (using the stairs, not the elevator) and throw himself off the roof. The remaining living egghead could surely do an adequate job producing any future work of this quality.

I was thumbing through one of these “Live Green” books the other day. Printed on recycled paper with a rough brown cover, soy ink, the whole thing... I think it was called “Live Green”. One of the chapter introductions was by the actor Owen Wilson, presumably written before his recent attempted suicide. In the intro, Wilson goes on about how buying a hybrid car has opened his eyes to how important the environment is and how every decision he makes effects his carbon footprint. He wrote that he was becoming obsessed with minimizing his damage to the environment in everything he did.

Soon enough, he’s sitting there with slit wrists and an empty bottle of pills. He later said that he was battling depression when he tried to take his own life. I can’t help but wonder if his new “green” thinking was responsible for the depression, since it is ultimately a negative thing, all about the harm you do, and never about the good.

If Mr. Phelps eats 12,000 cal/day, he is producing 6x the CO2 of the average couch potato. So what?

In some cases, this translates to a liberal censoring board.

Paying the uneducated poor to have babies is an expensive/pollution intensive way to get to that child. We should use the left's belief in AGW to defund the incentives to have welfare babies as well as stop the import of poor people from other countries. If properly framed AGW beliefs can be used to lower taxes and reduce big government too.

The number of brilliant individuals who were born to poor and uneducated parents in huge. We do not live in a deterministic society. The poor rise up to make more of themselves all the time.

I'm not saying to change anything about equal opportunity, only that government policies of giving incentives to poor people to have babies and giving benefits to poor people to immigrate from low energy consumption countries is in serious conflict with the goal of reducing pollution growth. Eliminating most social spending that encourages population growth has the most bang for the buck compared to all other choices. Conservatives can use CO2 mania to achieve conservative goals and we shouldn't overlook the opportunity.

Very well said indeed, and human beings did come up with ways to break dependence on so called fossil fuels. Nuclear, wind, offshore drilling, deep and slant drilling, and improving solar cells/batteries. The problem is the eco freak NIMBY tree hugging power mad “people are the problem” types who have kept these technologies from going into wide use.

If we want cheaper plentiful gas, Drill wherever there is oil (there is a crapload), build more refinery capacity, and build more nuclear capacity. “...it’s rainig soup, we just need to come up with more efficient spoons...” ( a Robert Heinlein character).
