Terror Probe in Case of Somali-Born Man Found Dead of Cyanide Poisoning in Denver Hotel
Fox News ^ | August 15, 2008

FBI terrorism experts are investigating whether the death of a Somali-born Canadian citizen — whose body was found Monday in a Denver hotel room with about a pound of extremely toxic sodium cyanide — is connected to the upcoming Democratic National Convention.

The Denver coroner said the man died of cyanide poisoning.

The cause of death was announced Thursday, but authorities haven't determined whether 29-year-old Saleman Abdirahman Dirie committed suicide.

An FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force has been sent to Denver, although Special Agent Kathy Wright said there's no information to conclude that Dirie had terrorist ties, the Rocky Mountain News reported.

While local law enforcement officials tried to downplay the incident, stressing that there was no sign of foul play in the death of Dirie, a Defense Department contractor said it's likely a terror plot could have been in the works, considering the toxicity and reported amount of cyanide found with the 29-year-old from Ottawa.

"I don't see how anybody could do anything but look into the possibility that this is a potential terrorist attack," Dr. Andrew Ternay told CBS 4 News in Denver.

The FBI, however, said Wednesday that there's probably no reason for them to go back to the fourth-floor room at the Burnsley Hotel, where Dirie was found.

The hotel is located about four blocks from the Denver state Capitol.

"It's an isolated incident," Denver Police Detective John White told the newspaper. They refused to speculate on why he had such a large quantity of the poisonous substance with him in the swanky all-suite hotel so soon before the convention in Denver, Aug. 25-28.

"We don't think it's any act of terrorism," Sonny Jackson, a spokesman for the Denver Police Department, told FOXNews.com. "We have no reason to believe it was. Nobody knows . . .

A Somali muzz found dead with a large stash of cyanide, in a city that is soon to host the convention of one of the two main political parties in America today, and there’s just the least bit of suspicion terrorism may be involved? I don’t care who the guy was: Having that amount of cyanide can’t be for anything BUT some sort of terrorist action.

Kind of like the soalis who beat up somebody the other day because the “didn’t like white people”. Why the heck are we letting these miscreants into the country?-—Oh yea, it would be politically incorrect to deny them.

Easy mistake.

You think you’re opening the Sodium chloride to sprinkle on your french fries, the phone rings, you grab the Sodium cyanide instead....

Could have happened to anyone.

Why would they think it is terror related. I mean, doesn’t everyone carry a jar full of a pound of cynanide? I usually do when visiting strange motels and hotels because you can never tell how bad the rats are(no pun intended)/SAR. Really, these people need to get their sh** together, do they really think the average American is so stupid as to believe this guy wasn’t up to no good with the poison he had?

Well, if it isn't terrorism, perhaps it's work related and OSHA should be the lead agency. /s

WTH? Check this guy's bank records, phone records, employment record, who he ate lunch with, girlfriends, wives, buddies, car rental, library card usage, where he prays at, ( a extremist mosque perhaps? ), who he rented his house from, where he shopped at, what ISP he used, his computer HD, medical record, dental record, school report cards, Blockbuster rentals, Columbia tape of the month club membership, etc.

Then and only if he comes out clean, will I believe that it wasn't a terrorist plot.

Well Y'all know that the main line Democrats are deeply hated in some circles. What a shame, and here a left wing dem was getting ready to do his job for the upcoming convention, probobly had a net of Islamic contacts in the hotel who are cooks and concierges etc.

What is it thats widely consumed on the floor of the dem convention. Why hotel brand bottled water of course! One can see it all lined up in chests of ice and coolers on the floor of the Dem convention.Labelled "Democratic Convention 2008,"ith little smilely faces of BJ, Hillary and Obamster on them.

Why are the police saying it was an isolated ncident? They have to so that they can roll up the net.

OR

They really do believe its an isolated incident ( incredulous are you , so am I!). I mean many travellers just go around the country with a suitcase full of cyanide powder. You know just in case we need to use it as a throat gargle. GREAT STUFF. Kills germs instantly! ( sarc. off)

I guess the Dems security people are calling this "coolaid close!"

This IS getting interesting. How many more assassins are in Denver. A pile I bet.

Well of course not you ninnies. It was probably a "work accident", no different than some Hamas bomb maker blowing himself into a fine mist when the "Mother of Satan" (triacetone triperoxide, peroxyacetone, TATP, TCAP) gets a little frisky on him.

Nah...that would fit the evidence, not imagination!

Yes, it could be terrorist-related, but I’m getting really tired of the knee-jerking that used to be a Liberal trait. “Probably” has been stated time after time here, whenever there’s a beheading, explosion, etc...and it’s rarely terrorist-related. Crying wolf doesn’t help the cause.

I don’t care who the guy was: Having that amount of cyanide can’t be for anything BUT some sort of terrorist action.

By your reasoning, an awful lot of terrorists are roaming around! Such reasoning reminds me of, "But he had a gun--he must be a criminal!"

You've obviously never purchased cyanide (though admittedly I've never purchased sodium cyanide...I've always bought potassium cyanide). It's not like you buy it by the single gram--the smallest quantity that I've ever bought was about 1 pound (500 grams). Though it's possible to buy lower quantities of reagent grade (at a huge premium), it's unusual.

The shipping itself used to cost more than the chemical, as you have to declare it hazardous, etc. But 500 g of reagent grade NaCN is less than $100...and even less, if technical grade.

O...and when a friend of mine got some cyanide to kill herself, her note said that she'd sent the remainder of the 500g to me--all she needed was about a teaspoon and she figured I could use the rest (it evidently got lost in the mail--but this can't be that lost shipment, as it was KCN not NaCN). In any case, she was not a terrorist.

Now, is it possibly linked to terrorism? Yes. But remember that it could instead be something like this guy offing himself. Or that he was ripping off someone in the precious metals industry. Knee-jerk and shoot-from-the-hip reactions are something for the left, not us, IMHO.

Oh come on! Do you know how difficult it is to obtain that quantity of Sodium Cyanide for non industrial use?

Read up on suicide. This guy may have killed himself, but ask yourself why.Or maybe he screwed up when he was handling the stuff.

Why was he carrying that quamntity when all he needed was a small ampunt to kill himself. It like a person deciding to shoot himself and then insteaad of a round or two of ammo, he brings along a case of ammunition to use

Do you have criminal investigative training? Doesn't sound like it.

I do.

Take this to the bookies and place your bet. This is not a normal suicide, if it was a suicide at all. And many others are involved.

Oh come on! Do you know how difficult it is to obtain that quantity of Sodium Cyanide for non industrial use?

Yes...not very difficult at all. In fact, smaller quantities tend to arouse more suspicion, and it's rare to be able to buy small quantities...plus, it's at a huge premium. For only three times the price, one can get twenty times the product...so small quantities tend to raise the question...."why are you looking for so little?"

Read up on suicide.

I would put money down that I have read FAR more than you on suicide. In fact, Derek Humphrey once tried to claim credit for my web community set up for discussion of suicide issues.

This guy may have killed himself, but ask yourself why.

About 4 in 10 people with schizophrenia attempt suicide;
about 1 in 10 people with schizophrenia succeed.

That was easy.

Or maybe he screwed up when he was handling the stuff.

It's pretty difficult to consider it dissolving some NaCN in water and drinking it as merely "screwing up during handling."

Why was he carrying that quamntity when all he needed was a small ampunt to kill himself. It like a person deciding to shoot himself and then insteaad of a round or two of ammo, he brings along a case of ammunition to use

"Sir, I don't need a whole box of ammo. Please just sell me a single cartridge."
Yeah, that happens all the time! </sarc>

From my reading, I can confirm that cyanide suicides tend to have far more than a few grams in their possession at time of death. I'm just curious why you were so eager for me to go to the literature, which shreds your points.

Do you have criminal investigative training? Doesn't sound like it.

See FReepmail.

Take this to the bookies and place your bet. This is not a normal suicide, if it was a suicide at all. And many others are involved.

I don't go to bookies, but I believe I could make some $ on this one.

Ok, lets go with your theory.

The question then would be, why did this happen in Denver at the end of an international trip from Canada? Why not in Miami, or Las Vegas , or another tourist Mecca frequented by Canadian immigres?

I still bet on the something is up theory, because the consequences of ignoring it are just way too high. And the FBI thinks so as well. They are ON IT! As they should be.

And I believe you will find that the FBI has a team iquestioning the service staff at the Pepsi Center in Denver and related caterers, especially those with known ME contacts and family.

Right, an impoverished Somali immigrant enters the US illegally and goes directly to one of the fanciest hotels in Denver, which just happens to be the site of the DNC convention, with his pound of cyanide to kill himself. A really plausible scenario.

Somebody like him probably didn’t even know this hotel existed. Furthermore, I’d suspect that a lot of the suites (it’s a suite-only hotel) at this hotel were already booked for most of August, and had probably been booked since the convention was first announced.

I was unaware he also has family in Miami and Las Vegas...I just knew of the family in Denver, especially the female family member who was the last on his cell phone. But I don't think that it's suspicious that he chose that family to visit rather than others.

Of course it's prudent to investigate possible connections, but that doesn't mean that it's likely a terrorist plot.

Based on the fact that he didn't have a passport with him at time of death, or what? They have record of him passing through the border...did they let him go through illegally, or what?

Earlier reports said that he had entered illegally (that is, with no record of his entry). Obviously, this was incorrect, but it still doesn’t make his movements any more explicable.

Earlier reports also said that his family said they had no relatives in Denver and there was no reason for him to be there; maybe they didn’t know his sister lived there, or maybe she had only recently gone there. If he’s from a Muslim polygamous family, he may have many siblings or half-siblings and it’s quite possible that not everybody in the family knows where they are at a given moment. Is his sister a hotel maid, by any chance?

This still doesn’t explain what he was doing in a SUITES ONLY high end hotel. He wouldn’t go there to kill himself, if only because he probably would never have known about such a place and wouldn’t have had the money on his own. A suite means either that he was expecting other people, or that he had perhaps gone there because he was attempting to plant a “surprise” for a group he knew would be in that suite later; or that he wanted to stage something that would affect lots of people and get lots of publicity.

Furthermore, the fact that his body was not found for six days indicates either that (a) whoever had been working with him was still around and somehow managed to keep hotel cleaning staff from going into the room or (b) somebody on the hotel’s staff was involved or (c) the room was thought to be empty, that is, nobody had booked it at that time, but somehow the Somali had gotten into it to fiddle around with the cyanide, resulting in his death. That is a very good hotel, and they certainly do not let a tenanted room go uncleaned for six days.

The key is the hotel, IMO. When and how did the Somali book? Did he even book, or did he simply turn up in the room dead? Who else has booked in that hotel? Who was booked for that suite? Media representatives? They often book suites.

The reason the leftists and, I suspect, the Muslims and other anti-American forces, want to attack Denver is not because they disagree with the politics of the DNC, but because they want as much coverage as possible for their activities.
