Netherlands Recognises Polygamous Marriages of Muslims
NIS News Bulletin ^ | August 12, 2008

ROTTERDAM, 12/08/08 - Although polygamy is banned in the Netherlands, the marriages of Muslims who have several wives are recognised by Dutch authorities.

Registrars in the major cities, in particular, record dozens of bigamous or polygamous marriages per year. These marriages are prohibited and an offence in the Netherlands. However, polygamous marriages that take place in countries where more than one wife is permitted, such as Morocco, are accepted, newspaper NRC Handelsblad reports.

If immigrants with several wives settle in the Netherlands, the local authorities register all the marriages. However, the Central Bureau for Statistics (CBS), where all marriages are registered nationally, removes these bigamous or polygamous marriages from its files, on the assumption that administrative errors have occurred. As a result, it is not known how common the phenomenon is in the Netherlands.

Amsterdam city council has informed the CBS that the marriages are not a mistake. "We will now investigate whether this can be regarded as a trend that was previously not recognised. If this is the case, it is out task to report this," CBS researcher Jan Latten explained in NRC Handelsblad.

"At present, it is not included in our statistics," Latten pointed out. "In the same way, we delete marriages involving fourteen-year-olds. A man with two wives just cannot exist by law."

Spokesman T. Verhoeven of the Rotterdam city council disclosed that polygamous marriages are registered almost every week. "They are simply acknowledged. It is important for us to check that the documents are authentic and that the husband does not have Dutch nationality." Otherwise the construction is illegal, Verhoeven explained.

One set of laws (and welfare benefits) for Muslims, another set of laws for everyone else. How do the native Dutch, some of the most intelligent and educated people in the world (see http://www.iqcomparisonsite.com/NationalIQs.aspx ), benefit from so much relatively unskilled Muslim immigration? Why don't they make the husband, upon entry, specify who his *first* wife is. She should be recognized as his sole wife under Dutch law, and if he and the other "wives" don't like it, they should stay in their home country!

When equal protection is used as justification of homosexual marriage, it opens the door for any other sort of desired marriage. Such as polygamy.

Marriage laws weren’t created by either God or state as a benefit to the couple or the two parties involved. They were created to meet the interests of God and the state.

In any event, homosexuals desiring marriage have exactly the same rights as heterosexuals desiring marriage: you can marry one adult individual of the opposite sex. The protection is equal.

This is one of the many, many reasons I left that country.

Pretty much the final nail in the coffin of the Netherlands...just a matter of getting buried now. The Muzzies will be more than happy to take care of that too.

Pretty much gives “honor killings” the green light, too.

OK, they will recognize incoming polygamistic relationships that would be valid in other countries.

So, the question arises, if you are Muslim and have entered the Netherlands, is your "right" to further multiple wives cut off forever? What if one dies -- can she be replaced? Once accepted, can you go to a Muslim country that recognizes multiple marriages and pick up a recognized "vacation marriage?" Will it be recognized on your return? If so, why can't non-Muslim Dutch citizens--rappers and the like--get in on this deal? Wouldn't it be religious discrimination if they couldn't?

Its a slippery slope (pun partially intended).

If they are accepting marriages which took place BEFORE immigration, then I *might* understand the accomodation or mercy. If the Dutch are talking about recognising marriages AFTER emigration, then the Dutch need to seriously rethink this.

So Barack Hussein Obama Sr.’s marriage to Barry Junior’s mom would’ve been legal in the Netherlands?

They’d better permit polygamy for everyone or they will find the breeding rates among muslims with multiple wives out pacing all other groups.

Hey, I’m sure the Muzzies are going to show the Dutch the same level of tolerance when they get majority power!

An example of what is happening in the rest of the world, giving in to Muslim customs. Think what those Arab countries would be like if they had not the good fortune of sitting on all that oil! They would still be in tents, roaming the desert killing each other.

There must have been a very good reason that my ancestor left Holland in 1659 and settled in Brooklyn, Nieuw Amsterdam.

Maybe, when did the Nederlands give up Indonesia?

“If they are accepting marriages which took place BEFORE immigration, then I *might* understand the accomodation or mercy.”

I don’t think the country benefits from admitting such people. I don’t know how Dutch social benefits work. In the U.S., when a husband dies, his wife may be eligible for some Social Security benefits, and if she still has minor children, so are they. For a polygamous family, should all the wives and their children get such benefits? It would be grossly unfair only for people of certain religions to get vastly more benefits than others. If the same benefit were *divided* among all the wives, that would remove one objection, but I’d still have many others.

Laura Ingraham was a repeat this morning but I caught part of an interview with some figure from an American muslim organization (not CAIR).

There were a couple of guests and they were debating the meaning of different passages of the koran. And one that came up was the submission of the “people of the book” the the muslim masters and paying additional taxes. The flunky was trying to say that another passage about no religious requirement (not the right word) negating it but he DID concede that in a muslim majority nation the non-muslims were required by Islamic law to submit.

And it doesn’t just have to be historically muslim nations, he also included Indonesia as an example of a muslim nation that is tolerant of other faiths.

Ultimately it is an imperialist theocracy. It lays claim to land and is reluctant to surrender any territories to other ideologies. It is discriminatory. If the West applied the same tactics to Islam that Islamic nations apply to other religions (restrict or prohibit the practice) all Imam agree that would be a trigger for jihad in those nations.

Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free? Just ask Hugh Hefner and his three live-in girl friends at the Playboy Mansion. He’ll tell you its a much better deal than the antequated institution of marriage, whether monogamous or polygamous.
