Report: Edwards' wife in anguish after affair

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Elizabeth Edwards' decision not to leave her husband after he confessed to an affair was hastened by the discovery of her cancer recurrence just months after the revelation, her brother and a friend told People magazine.

"She couldn't say, 'Well, maybe we'll work through this for years, or maybe we should separate for two years,"' said Hargrave McElroy, a friend, told the magazine for its Aug. 25 issue. "(The cancer) forced her to choose whether to move forward."

Edwards, a two-time Democratic presidential candidate, admitted last week to having a short affair in 2006 with a filmmaker named Rielle Hunter, who was hired that year to produce short videos for his political action committee. The former North Carolina senator denied he was the father of Hunter's five-month old daughter, and offered to take a paternity test to prove it.

Through her attorney, Hunter rejected the idea of such a test and said she has no intention to speak publicly about the affair. Through a spokeswoman, both John and Elizabeth Edwards declined a request for an interview Wednesday.

Edwards has said he both ended the affair and told Elizabeth about his infidelity in 2006. He kicked off his second bid for the White House in New Orleans a few days after Christmas, at an event that Hunter attended and Elizabeth did not.

“Hunter rejected the idea of such a test and said she has no intention to speak publicly about the affair.”

Right...I bet she’d “speak publicly” about it quick enough if he turned the hush-money tap off.

I don't know if anyone else saw it, but tonight on Deborah Norville's show (I always get the titles of the entertainment shows mixed up) Rielle Hunter's big sister (by 18 months) gave an exclusive interview. Her name is Roxanne Druck Something, she lives in NC, and was ashamed that her lil sis took up w/a man who she knew had a dying wife; she's also sure that Rielle is in 'hiding' at Johnny's behest; that the baby is his; oh....and that she is happy to also have her own fifteen minutes of fame.

So he ended the affair in 06, but still does her in hotels?
That's not ending it.

Yeah right. I’m still not convinced she had a recurrence of cancer. She looks too healthy (read: chunky) here a year or more after their announcement that the terminal cancer had returned.

Fist she had to deal with the anguish her husband caused. Then, months later, the cancer returns. Maybe the cancer would have returned anyway but the added stress could not help matters.

That is so true, no one will ever know but I couldn’t live with thinking I could have caused additional harm that way.

As I wrote earlier this week, I have no sympathy for Elizabeth. A liberal woman who hitched her wagon to a scum-sucking shyster lawyer. A guy who was smarmy and untrustworthy to begin with, and then helped try to cover this up.

No sympathy for her about this. I do feel bad she has cancer that will probably kill her. But not about her husband’s affair at all.

I think the reason the reporters don’t report the infidelity is becuase THEIR OWN sex lives are sordid.

You are probably right to a degree. But they seem to be some what selective.

For instance, they jumped on the “I have a wide stance in the airport bathroom” story and the “singing prostitute with the Congressman” story. They reported those ad nauseum. (I actually knew those two guys names at one time, lol)

It seems to be a matter of who you are.

"Rielle is in 'hiding' at Johnny's behest; that the baby is his...."

She's what, forty-two years old? Seeing someone on the sly, you don't just "accidently" get pregnant in your forties. Without fertility drugs, it's hard to get pregnant at that age. My OB once told me that by 40 we only pop one good egg per year, the rest are dead.

Bingo. That’s why adultery is wrong because of the pain, suffering, and grief it inflicts on the spouse. But for someone already fighting off a potential fatal, terminal disease, it’s a disaster. The LAST thing a person struggling with cancer needs is being abandoned by their spouse.

He's way too smart, and too rich to even think about shutting that spigot. But after Elizabeth croaks, she's only going to give him a few months of 'mourning' before she expects him to come running to her side. At that point, either he saddles himself with this skank, or dumps her for a different skank, and then we get the fireworks show.

I wouldn’t be surprised AND....

How sorry can you REALLY feel for her. His sleaziness is obvious, and his wife knows him better than any of us. I mean she PROBABLY knows all his shady dealings, etc...yet she stayed. She could have divorced him, left with millions, but she stayed knowing the real him........how can I feel sorry for her??

There is so much that children, and especially young children, go through when they lose a parent, particularly to something like cancer.

To have mixed up with all that a load of anger and shame at their father’s conduct-—conduct that the little ones will only grow to understand the implications of more and more as time goes on-—is just horrible.

Breck Boy, I’m sure, crushed his children in this as well.

There are no words to describe what I’m thinking. All the stress he has put her under while undergoing cancer treatment is beyond belief. Stress is the worse thing for anyone, especially when the immune system is weakened.

It is. I can’t think of anything worse that you can do to a spouse except possibly take their child away. He will be judged more harshly for this than we can ever imagine.

Roxanne (Druck Marshall) says that John Edwards has been untruthful in many of his statements to the media about the affair. She says that contrary to what John Edwards says, the affair with her sister started long before she started working on the campaign and that it never really ended. That they are still in contact today. That they’ve spoken recently, and that her sister is still very much in love with John Edwards.

The two-part interview on Entertainment Tonight will air Wednesday and Thursday night.

I agree that seeing someone on the sly and gettting pregnant is usually not an accident. Usually intentional...or just plain ignorant. She could have set him up.

But prior to the emergence of fertility drugs, there were a lot of “oops” menopause babies.

What is a supposedly good, upright Baptist boy doing in a bar in New York, flirting with seasoned skanks, floozies, party girls, and golddiggers when he has a wife dying of cancer back home??? Who was taking care of his wife?

Presumably, he wasn't in the bar alone. There must have been staff, colleagues, and security people in tow. So someone else who knew him was there and saw them flirting.

Suppose he had won the nomination and then the election. Would he have been gassing up Airforce One for fake important policy trips to California? Apparently, he is not as concerned about global warming as he would have us believe.

It was reckless and stupid as well as immoral.

She seemed to deal with it well enough when he threw her out there as an attack dog on the campaign, knowing full well no one could respond because of her condition.

If Edwards was a real man he would retire to his study with a brandy and a pistol and do the right thing.

Well, a donor has her shacked up in a McMansion in LA. More AC for the Edwards phallic carbon footprint. If there is a heated pool or sauna...more fodder for the global warming hysterics.

No mansion in California is complete without some help from illegals with no green cards. $15,000 per month. That was some meaningless affair!

What a shameful comment! I know a woman who was terminal for 3 years. She died bloated and FAT from cortisone and other treatments. Not everyone dying of cancer is gaunt and hairless. I am sure you did not mean to sound so callous.
