Russia: US must choose Moscow or "project Georgia"
Reuters ^ | 13 Aug 2008 | Oleg Shchedrov

Posted on 08/13/2008 11:27:06 AM PDT by MaestroLC

MEIENDORF CASTLE, Russia, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Russia's foreign minister said on Wednesday the United States had to choose between partnership with Moscow and the Georgian leadership which he described as a "virtual project".

"We understand that this current Georgian leadership is a special project of the United States, but one day the United States will have to choose between defending its prestige over a virtual project or real partnership which requires joint action," Sergei Lavrov told reporters.

U.S. President George W. Bush on Wednesday demanded Russia resolve a crisis with Georgia and said he would dispatch U.S. military aircraft with humanitarian supplies.

Why would we want to be “partners” with a regime of murderous thugs who are actively aiding and abetting the Axis of Terror?

This is a very difficult decision.

On one hand, we have a small democracy that not only poses no threat to the United States, but has actually proven to be much more of an ally than our traditional ‘friends’ in Europe.

On the other hand, we have a nation that still maintains a few thousand nuclear warheads, most of them aimed at us. And now, they’re issuing an ultimatum.

Yep, very difficult choice, this one.

The Russians have thrown the gauntlet. Either cooperate with us on our terms or stand with your ally. The Russians are betting we won't have the cojones to stand up for the Georgians. They are taking the fullest measure of our resolve to defend our interests and stand by our friends. When push comes shove, that's what the Kremlin is betting America won't do. For the record, we haven't language like that since the worst days of the Cold War used against us.

With Russia?

The only real partnership Russia has is with Iran.

We choose to stand with free Georgia, her democratically elected government and it's freedom-loving people. And we choose to stand against tyrannical regimes and countries that think what they want to take by tanks and force of arms is theirs for the taking.

If America and Americans do not stand with Georgia, then the Ukraine, Poland and other CIS states that won their freedom from the USSR will be the next to fall.

Note to Russia; this isn't 1936 - 1939 and your not NAZI Germany. We learned our lesson since the last time this stunt was pulled. The last time, no one did anything while Hitler gobbled up the Sudeten Land, Austria, Czechoslovakia and 80 million people died. This time around we will stand with our friends against naked aggression.

Tell Russia to go to hell. Only an idiot would believe that Russia has been an honest partner on ANY issue since the fall of the USSR.

Remember the period leading up to the invasion of Iraq? Russia was right up front mucking up the issue while their advisors were all over Iraq doing God knows what? Remember the convoys leaving Iraq and going to Syria...esccorted by Russians, in some cases Russian trucks. And what about how helpful Russia has been with Iran? Their partnership is a JOKE!

Go to hell Russia!

Partnership with Moscow? No thanks.

Moscow (KGB Kremlin Thug-ocracy) is leading Russia in exactly the wrong direction. Threatening neighbor nations. Rigging elections. Shutting down the free press. Murdering critics. Playing patsy-cake with the Mullahs in Iran.

Post-Soviet Russia had the opportunity to be great again. Putin is dragging it into the gutter.

It (the Bush speech) said nothing about what had happened on Aug 8, when Western leaders maintained silence when Tskhinvali became a target of massive bombing," Lavrov said.

The events leading up to Aug. 8 tell the whole story. This was a planned invasion spear headed by irregular Russian forces from North Ossetia and the separatist forces within Georgia.

” We choose to stand with free Georgia, her democratically elected government and it’s freedom-loving people. “

I agree with most of your post, but this reads like it was written by a PR firm.

US interests here have more to do with what russia is trying to accomplish than the nature of the georgian government. It is simply convenient, from a propaganda viewpoint, that they had elections (I don’t know how much foreign influence/money went into this election, a la Ukraine).

Picking off former SSR’s, supporting (or financially supporting) election of pro-US governments in them, etc., in fact is a matter of GREAT concern to russia and was guaranteed to concern them.

I don’t factually know how much US corporate involvement was involved in what was in effect the looting of russian assets and natural resources from the State in teh yeltsin years, but i don’t see how they could have simply been on the sidelines. Maybe someone has more info?
