LAX: Air India's departure is part of a slate of expected cuts.
Air India will withdraw its three weekly round-trip flights from Los Angeles International Airport in September, signaling a trend that finds more overseas carriers cutting service amid record-high fuel prices.
Tuesday's announcement comes as international air carriers are expected to slash 213 weekly takeoffs and landings at LAX by November, an 11 percent drop compared to the same period last year.
As a result, 33,452 fewer seats will be available to airline passengers each week by late fall, an 8.4 percent drop from last year, according to data provided by Atlanta-based Innovata, an airline scheduling database.
"It's going to be even more than that as we move closer to fall," said Frank Clark, head of LAXTEC Corp., the agency that represents carriers in the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX.
"As long as fuel remains over $100 a barrel, the airlines will re-evaluate their market profitability and adjust schedules accordingly," Clark said. "They can't sustain a high level of service with these high fuel prices."
The figures do not take into account Air India's plan to cut six weekly takeoffs and landings aboard Boeing 747-400 jetliners between LAX and Frankfurt, with connecting flights to New Delhi and Mumbai.
Earlier this week, Cathay Pacific Airways announced plans to suspend one of three daily round-trip flights between Hong Kong and LAX beginning Oct. 26. The Hong Kong-based carrier is also dropping 10 weekly flights to Canada as it tries to beef up service between Australia and North America.
Earlier this year, Aer Lingus announced plans to pull all six of its weekly flights from LAX by fall, while Malaysia Airlines will drop all nine of its weekly flights.

That boy jes' ain't right, Granny!
Our local airport (Pittsburgh) is one of the best in the country and seriously under capacity.
LAX is great compared to DFW or the dreaded MIA.
Having flown in and out of both several times this summer, I have to disagree. LAX is definitely worse than DFW.
DFW reminds me of a Detroit Grey Dog Station.
Perhaps, it that feeling has to do with the fact that you are almost always on American Airlines when going through DFW.
If you have the option, IAH (BUSH) is the most pleasant international airport experience in the States. Atlanta is not all that bad.
Miami in a nightmare.
How are they going to manage the loss of revenue? Raise fees?
Coming into the country from abroad, EWR is best (nicest Immigration folks I've seen), SEA next (home airport is why), ORD & SFO & ATL okay, DTW far last (the stoopid search).
LAX? Went through it last year, for the first time in decades. Didn't like it. As dirty as MEM and without the "charm."
