Pelosi indicates openness to offshore drilling vote

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday night dropped her staunch opposition to a vote on offshore oil drilling in the House.

Republicans, reacting to high gas prices, have demanded a vote on additional oil exploration in the Outer Continental Shelf, where drilling is currently blocked by a moratorium. Until now, Pelosi (D-Calif.) has resisted the idea as a “hoax.” But in an interview on CNN’s Larry King Live, she indicated that she was open to a vote.

“They have this thing that says drill offshore in the protected areas,” Pelosi said. “We can do that. We can have a vote on that.”

Nancy: "We can solve these high prices by shooting down the speculators!"

Jed: "Well... don't rightly know what a speceelater is, but I seen Granny shoot at some revenuers snoop'n 'round her still. Kept us from pay'n more fer her authritis medicine...and I only did some shoot'n at some food. If you'd jest let me get back to some good 'ol fashion, down and dirty, drill'n and pump'n, I think I kin fix your problem Miss Nancy."

Nancy: I'm flabbergasted that you would suggest such a crude thing on national television Mr. Clampett.

Jed: "Weee doggies Miss Nancy, when Jethro eats too much of Grannie's road kill stew, he gets them flabber gassers, too. Just take some baken soady to relieve that gas. But I thought we was here to talk about gasoline, not that kind of gas...

Pelosi had previously said she would allow a vote on drilling and then backed off.

She was asked if she could envision a vote on drilling in new areas this year, and she answered, “Of course.”

But her aides later released a statement saying she was not announcing a change in her stance on a drilling vote.

She indicated such a vote would have to be part of a larger package that included other policies, like releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which she said could bring down prices in a matter of days.

This way Pelosi and her fellow-traveling comrades can cripple our reserves intended for military and defense.

Luckily, GOPers in both houses are too smart for that.

Oh, wait, Lindsey Graham et al. will go for it if it includes some 50 mile drilling restrictions.

Nancy does nothing without a reason.

Possible scenariio--Dems are getting creamed by drill now demands from public. Five Repubs. of the wonderful NEW gang of ten, rushing to be bipartisan (Chambliss of GA, Graham, & 3 others) are agreeing to offshore drilling--50 miles out, only 4 states, allowing all sorts of orgns. to have a say. In other words, just enough of a come on to take away a winning Repub. cause and to get the drilling question off the backs of vulnerable Dems. This paper/bill still says no ANWR, no reopening of drillrigs shut down since Katrina that are closer in than fifty miles, etc.

Why wouldn't Nancy agree to a vote on a bill that, in effect, gives nothing, but looks like they are for drilling?

In a letter to House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Republicans have been obstructing Democratic bills aimed at lowering gas prices through releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, investing in alternative fuels and conservation and cracking down on oil speculators.

“While a very small band of your colleagues remain on the House floor to discuss gas prices, their constituents deserve to know why their representatives in Congress have failed to support serious, responsible proposals,” she wrote. “Using yesterday’s solutions to today’s problems will not allow us to achieve energy independence.”

When asked about an idea floating around that Pelosi call a special session only to vote on issues like childrens’ health insurance and other Democratic agenda items, Boehner became indignant.

I am say Lindsey Graham and a few other republican senators are working with senate democrats to get a weak oil bill that will do nothing to help us get more oil. The house republicans along with moderate democrats will have a much stronger bill that will actually increase drilling. So there will be two different bills. It then goes to the conference committee where the house and senate work out the differences. Whatever comes out of that meeting will be voted on. I am sure Reid and Pelosi will see to it that the bill will be no good and not worth passing.

If drilling all of those massive reserves wouldn't bring the prices down, then how does she justify saying releasing the SPR would bring prices down? ridiculous.

OK, yeah, I agee with you.

Pelosi has probably thought up a way to make it look like she is going along with an open, up-or-down vote on drilling. In fact, she is planning an end-run around the issue so as to pass legislation that will prevent drilling.

This issue - DRILL NOW, DRILL HERE - is our get-out-the-vote issue that will propell the Republicans and Conservatives back into power.

But only if we work it right this time.

Good question, my FRiend.

Ms Pelosi, as with most of the Dems in the Congress, is all about instant fiction to support her malignant blames and Stalinist accusations. She lies for the sheer sport of it.

(And she knows instinctively that the dominant media will support every non sequitur and obscene lie.)

One other thing. Although Ms. Pelosi is not especially...umm...S.M.A.R.T., she doesn't appear to understand her cognitive limits.

This is another golden opportunity for John McCain.

While Nancy is wanting to release oil from the SPR, WAR has unexpectedly broken out in Georgia. Any release of oil should be for military purposes only. McCain needs to explain this to the public, and point out that a thriving domestic oil industry is required for national security.

Let me give you the dialogue to the PMSNBC debate....

Nancy: Isn't it true that it would take 5-10 years for these oil wells to produce any oil?

Jed: You know Nancy baby, there is an old country song that goes somethin like "If I'da killed ya when I wanted to, I would be outta jail by now"

Nancy: Really? That's fascinating. What artist sang it?

Jed: I dunno, but I'm sure one of them FReepers who listen to country music can tell you.

The MSM is misreporting her position - which is nothing but empty rhetoric, because she wants to wrap it all into a big bill full of damaging actions, such as releasing oil from the SPR. She wants to make is sound she is “listening to the American people”, when in fact, she is just makes it sound like it.

Pelosi is a liar. I don't believe her one bit...it'll be called a "vote on drilling" by the LameStream Media and the Democrat operatives (but I repeat myself)...but what it will REALLY be is a very very restricted drilling option, for lots of money PLUS huge new taxes on the developers of new oil resources.

IOW, a tiny bit of oil for huge new taxes. That is the Nazi Pelosi way.

Maybe Palosi’s recent flirtation with allowing a House vote on offshore oil drilling, was a signal to Putin that the US was serious about changing the oil equation? That assumes that Pelosi would actually listen to reason from those smarter than her on both oil and global geo-politics.

The sole reason Pelosi wants to insist on releasing oil from the SPR is so when the prices do go down because we open up drilling, she and the dems can say it was the release of oil from SPR that brought it down.

The Republicans need to stand firm on not releasing oil from SPR. It is a shortsighted and dangerous plan given that the Iranians are threatening to shut down the Straits of Hormuz and the Russians are at war with Georgia where another important pipeline is in jeopardy.

Supply disruptions in the future are a very real possibility.

Just my two cents.

Thanks for the ping.

A pretty good point. On the other side of the coin, how lame would it look if the GOP blocks drilling because of that one detail? I think people would look at it as cheap, partizan wrangling.

Sure the rats will claim that her little SPR dribble did the trick, but I like to think that voters can be smarter than that.
