Rove: Obama should be ‘way ahead’ By Klaus Marre and Walter Alarkon Posted: 08/10/08 12:40 PM [ET]

Republican strategist Karl Rove said Sunday the fact that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama does not have a large lead in the race shows that there are “grave doubts” about the Illinois senator.

“With a restive electorate, with an economy that's sort of chugging around, with a war in the background, at the end of eight years of Republican rule in the White House, Obama should be way ahead,” Rove, who engineered President Bush’s two election victories and whose name is synonymous with tough campaigning, said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

Obama isn’t performing up to hype. This is on his shoulders, not because McCain is beating him.

Sorry Karl, but there is so much more to Obama, what he IS and what he STANDS FOR, that old-fashioned political measures do not apply. America has NEVER seen the likes of Obama, what he is, what he stands for, and what he would do to America, in the Presidential race. Worse than McGovern, Carter, Kerry and Clinton combined. More dangerous than all of them, and far less experienced. What a horrid credential -— that must count for something, Karl.

Barry should be showing as a landslide according to hype and help from the liberal media. McCain should have packed up and gone home in utter awe. Instead, JM hasn’t had to do much at all to stay even.

So, what’s the problem Barry? Not enough Hopium to go around?

I wish I had your enthusiasm for Karl. Were he to stand up and admit that it was the Swiftvets and their ads that proved the difference for GWB in 2004 I would gain a great deal of respect for him. His ego - and possibly his greater knowledge of what he and his team actually did - prevents that. But, mostly I think it's his ego.

I do agree with you that in this instance he is a genius.

Regards,

TS

I agree. We haven’t seen the last of The HildaBeast on this one. IMO there is some serious planning and plotting going on right now in preparation for the convention.

He is a sharp cookie. And now that he’s in Punditville he’s raised the bar for political punditry (and subtle action).

He’s too runtish.

Presidents, unless they have a metric ton of character, need to at least look like a big, fun, kid.

McCain isn’t Bush. Making that case is a stretch.

With the teleprompters off, Obama is a worse speaker than Bush (imo). Didn’t the MSM go on and on about how Bush isn’t too bright, mostly because of his speaking ability?

My feelings are that the polls show support for Obamimam because he is making his sales presentation as an idealist, and liberals are idealistic by nature, but the marginally sane liberals will not pull the lever come november

I think it will be a close election again as usual, but instead of coming down to florida, chicago, or Ohio, it will be down to Oregon this time, (the gun-toting hippies just wont do it}

I think that Mr. Rove and Mr. Davis are perpetuating silly self-defeatism among Republicans by publicly listing "reasons" for the Democrats to be ahead.

Not only are the "reasons" largely specious to begin with, but we should be focused on showing Mr. McCain in as positive light as possible, and reminding people that Mr. Obama is far too leftist to ever be an acceptable candidate in these United States, especially with the Democrats having both houses.

The dangers of having an equally leftist Pelosi running the House with an Obama presidency cannot be overstressed --- they have an agenda going from wild spending on everything from a United States "National Health Service" to Mr. Obama's "Global Poverty Act" proposal which would dump vast amounts of taxpayer money into U.N. projects (S.2433), to destroying our military and missile defense, and from there on to more extortionate taxation --- and enacting even some of that agenda would leave a grim future for our children.

While there's nothing wrong with discussing such strategic considerations among other professionals, broadcasting such is not helping us in the strongest way against Senator Obama. Yes, it does lead one to think that the Obama campaign is weak, and that Mr. Obama is a weak candidate, as he indeed is, but conceding items that are not even true is not the wisest way to present Mr. Obama's weaknesses.

Public appearances by Republican strategists at this point should be focused on winning on the race, not on the mechanics of handicapping.

Rove now has Obambi at 260 EVS -- short of the 269 he would need to be President. McCain isn't there yet either, but he has gained ground for three straight weeks now.

If he can ever latch onto an issue (energy?) that gives voters a reason to be enthusiastic about voting FOR him instead of just against Obama, he'll wind up winning this thing.

That makes two of us. I am sick and tired of how Obama should be way ahead of McCain and the doom and gloom about McCain that comes out of their mouths. Personally don't think Rove is all that happy that McCain is doing so well and wants it to be against Obama not for McCain. Wish our pundits would shut up for a month or more -- tired of all of the doom and gloomers on the Republican side. Rove never will admit that the Swift Boat Veterans won that race as his ego is way too large.

I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if Oregon goes for McCain.

I really haven’t seen that many signs or bumper stickers yet.
