Clinton was advised to portray Obama as foreign By MIKE ALLEN | 8/10/08 12:47 AM EST
Mark Penn, the top campaign strategist for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), advised her to portray Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) as having a limited connection to basic American values and culture, according to a forthcoming article in The Atlantic magazine.
The magazine reports Penn suggested getting much rougher with Obama in a memo on March 30, after her crucial wins in Texas and Ohio: Does anyone believe that it is possible to win the nomination without, over these next two months, raising all these issues on him? Wont a single tape of [the Reverend Jeremiah] Wright going off on America with Obama sitting there be a game ender?
Atlantic Senior editor Joshua Green writes that major decisions during her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination would be put off for weeks until suddenly Clinton would erupt, driving her staff to panic and misfire.
Green reports that on a staff conference call in January where Clinton received little response or silence to several of her suggestions for how to recover from the Iowa loss and do better in New Hampshire.
Clinton began to grow angry, according to a participants notes, Green recounts. This has been a very instructive call, talking to myself, she snapped, and hung up.

Good. Learn from Hillary what worked against Obama, and re-formulate it for McCain’s benefit.
One of the things a leader should never do is scare your assistants so much that they’re too afraid to give you honest advice. This also shows why she shouldn’t ever be President, besides being a doctrinaire Marxist agitator- she’s never had a real leadership role and was paralyzed when having to make the big decisions.
Right. From strictly a management aspect, HRC has never handled people well. She is more like the Queen of Hearts.
Mark Penn was correct. The Dalai Bama does have limited connection to American culture: said he had been to 57 states and had a couple more to visit; said that, as president, he would be working with world leaders for the next 8 to 10 years; and said he looked different than all the other Presidents who had been on the dollar bill. He sounds not so much like an affirmative action candidate, as he sounds like a special education candidate. The Dalai Bama flunked either American Government or Mathematics 101.
Hill and Bill obviously didn’t have the guts to do this....... Obama would have pulled the race card
Clintons- You live by the race card, die by the race card
Has the metrosexual Obama ever changed the oil on a car or done a brake job? This dude lives in the clouds.
Has McCain ever done automobile repair? Definitely!
When the house is on fire, its better to have a psychotic fireman than no fireman at all.
Lol.
Somehow I don't think so.
As a jet fighter pilot, I'll bet he learned how to look over and possibly do certain repair/maintenance procedures on gas turbine engines. Not while in flight, of course.
That reminds me of an old joke played on green ADA soldiers. New privates assigned to Air Defense Artillery on McGregor Range NM were sometimes told they were going to be the Nike “in flight mechanic.” They would get really happy until they thought about it for a while.
If he is going to say that his lack of foreign policy experience is more than offset by having been raised outside the US for part of his childhood, and traveling to visit his many foreign relatives, then HE is saying that, to a great degree, he lacks American roots.
Penn’s assessment of Obama seems accurate to me. He’s the anti-American candidate.
“...Wont a single tape of [the Reverend Jeremiah] Wright going off on America with Obama sitting there be a game ender?
Apparently not.
Penn made the mistake of thinking that things like Obama going to a church like Wright’s trumping race.
I still laugh at the idea of Spring Breaking in Pakistan gives him foreign relations experience. By that account, most of the college crowd can run Mexico.
You are completely 100% accurate in this post.
She scared her advisors to the point of being afraid to suggest and make critical decisions on her behalf, and then when put in the situation herself, couldn’t do it either.
It said that Bill was the one who decided to go with the 3:00 am ad. So that just nixes the entire premise of the ad in the first place.
It’s 3:00 am, do you want Bill Clinton answering the phone, because apparently Hillary is too much of a wussy to decide what to do.
Honestly, I’d still rather have Bill answer than Obama.
Honestly, most of the college crowd COULD run Mexico at least as well as their government does.
I think they just assumed Hillary was a shoe-in and that Obama was such a ridiculous candidate (which he is) that there was no way he could pull ahead of Hillary.
