John Edwards affair: how much will it hurt Obama?

BARACK Obama's supporters have moved to stem the damage after one-time party star and presidential hopeful John Edwards admitted having an affair during his White House run as his wife battled cancer.

With the party's national convention to officially crown Senator Obama as its White House candidate just over two weeks away, Democrats sought to minimise the John Edwards affair as a personal matter for the Edwards family.

"We have unrealistic expectations for people. John Edwards like the rest of us is only human," said Howard Wolfson, a former senior official for the rival presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton.

"The truth is a lot of ordinary, average Americans have affairs," Mr Wolfson said on Fox News.

Mr Edwards, a North Carolina senator before he joined the presidential race in 2004, went public with his long-rumoured affair on ABC television yesterday, conceding that it went on as he prepared his White House run and while his wife Elizabeth was being treated for breast cancer.

Mr Edwards, 54, apologised profusely, admitting that life on the campaign trail had made him "increasingly egocentric and narcissistic".

He denied, however, fathering the six-month-old baby of 42-year-old filmmaker Rielle Hunter, although according to reports her family is seeking a paternity test from Mr Edwards.

Elizabeth Edwards is a popular figure due to her courageous fight against her cancer, which has been judged by doctors to be incurable since it returned in 2007.

She wrote on the Daily Kos that her husband told her in 2006 of the affair, saying that it had been painful but that it was a private issue.

Senator Obama, on a week-long holiday in Hawaii, praised Mr Edwards as "a great champion of working people". But

-snip-

"The Edwards family indicated that they probably wouldn't be attending the convention," Senator Obama said.

Edwards will not be speaking at the democratic convention because of this. Bill (the most ethical administration) Clinton ,however, gets to remind everyone of his moral high-ground for at least one day of the convention. The fact that he hasn’t been caught recently makes him a prime celebrity. The sad truth is that Clinton, Edwards and the democratic party are not sorry for what they did but are sorry that they got caught.

“why did the democrat party wait so long to air this?”

My guess is that it’s Hillary! et al throwing dirty undies at the wall to see what sticks.

Trial balloon.

But as was said, Edwards is no “ordinary average” person, you know. He shouldn’t be subject to the same standards /s

My agreement would be, right, he shouldn’t be held to the same standards, the standards for those running for public office as a public servant should be even higher. It was always that way, at least in principle, until recent times. Apparently Clinton busted the whole thing open when he claimed that lying about an affair, even under oath, was perfectly natural and normal.

She’s got something on Obama. That convention is coming up real fast...she’d better get crackin’! LOL!

I can actually see her dragging a three or four year old child up on stage and claiming it’s Obama-Lama-Ding-Dong’s ‘Love Child.’

Then, the DNC takes a vote, and she’s one step closer to the White House. *SMIRK*

Notice how these democrats with a glib tongue find it so easy to say, “I did not have sex with that woman”. Look at Clinton and Edwards, Now here comes Obama with another smooth tongue.

You left out quite a few:

Father Pfleger,
Samantha Powers,
The Muslim outreach one-week-wonder
The VP Vetter dude that got the special mortgage deal from Countrywide...

there's at least 20 more, but my memory fails me. Someone should start an official under-the-bus count.

Given all of the news coverage, I have to ask.... Who is McCain?

Seriously, it boggles my mind that McCain made it through the primaries.

If John Edwards was a real man and a good father, he would step up, take responsibility for his baby, and give it his name.

Let's see, there is Spitzer the Spritzer, the New Blind and Black Governor of New York who had affairs on New York State's tax payers’ backs and the Mayor of Detroit.....and this was just in the last six months.

So wrinkly old McCain wasn't a choir boy last century, big freaking deal. Just like JFK, FDR and Bill blow job Clinton weren't choir boys either. And we all know how the American voters loved those former Presidents.

Also, McCain's second marriage seems rather solid. And the adoption of Bridget, originally from Bangladesh is wonderful.

I’m certainly no friend of Obama or Edwards, but other than the damage this does to the democratic party, and to Obama’s ability to see the truth even when it’s hitting him in the face, Edward’s sins belong only to Edwards.

Like all of America, Obama, too, had access to the reports that said that Edwards was cheating. Obama continued to have Edwards on his short list for VP....or so we were told.

This proof of Obama’s naivete suggests that Obama will get smoked by foreign leaders. “He’s really gullible,” Kim Jong Il will whisper to Ahmadinejab.

Obama is unable to rise above partisanship.

The truth is, Woofie, that most ordinary, average Americans haven't and also haven't held office in the US Senate and run on the ticket for Vice President of the United States, you duplicitous mouthpiece.

Wow, they really are spinning as hard as they can, aren't they...

Edwards and Kerry were “buddies”. Edwards feels the same way about OsamaObama. Just post a picture of Edwards kissing Barry. I’m sure there is one out there.

I left off my caption.

Maybe I need to work on it. Give me 30 seconds. That is my usual factor.

Well, maybe next time.

H E R E I S A PATHETIC CHARACTER AND A PATHETIC THOUGHT ... didn’t Elizabeth go through some type of fertization procedure or injections ... so that she could give Johnny another son ??? Did not this pose a health risk to her given her age ??? Then she developes cancer, terminal I might add !!! And the dirty rotten bum is cheating on her, and lying like the sleazy sack of dung that he is ... pathetic, pathetic. THIS GOES BEYOND CHEATING ... WHAT EVIL LURKS BEHIND HIS GOLDEN BOY FACADE.

Why would it hurt Obama? He didn't do it.
Besides, these are DEMOCRATS - this is a resume enhancer for Edwards.
