WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States told Russia on Friday to withdraw its forces from U.S. ally Georgia and stop its air attacks on the tiny Caucasus state following fighting in the breakaway region of South Ossetia.
"We call on Russia to cease attacks on Georgia by aircraft and missiles, respect Georgia's territorial integrity, and withdraw its ground combat forces from Georgian soil," U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in a statement.

Finally!
I don’t like the Russians.
Bu this is not our fight.

Yeah ... that will work.
Dude there is no way to supply those people.
They are so screwed, they probably thought this big EU/NATO thing they were applying for will bring them more then vine and cheese.
IT was obvious thats the location that Russia was not going to let NATO get a foothold in. Probably due to them monopolizing the oil trade.
I dunno kind of like that change hope negotiations paper pushing accomplishing nothing. I got to get me a job like that.

Boycott Russia to the max. Get it out of G8. No more favored nation status. Big tariffs on all goods. Hassle any visa application. Require any government contractor or vendor to certify that: 1) software used by their organization contains 0% Russian content; and 2) no software tasks are outsourced or subcontracted to Russia.

This reminds me of the Sharply Worded Note scene in Team America World Police.
Exactly. And why bluster if no action will be taken? It only makes us look more impotent.
Yes i hear you but EU has to get their gas from someplace, and they wont freeze just because some country someplace bought all the EU/NATO hooray thingy.

Listening to the Olympics coverage in NBC, the two announcers (one was Bob Costas) started blaming Georgia for the attack and said that Russia was protecting itself from an invading Georgia military.
exactly right and they probably know the oil prices are bogus and they have the oil/gas leverage against EU
they are not in great spot but they have enough chess pieces to rock everyone around for a bit
well they are reporters
truth is that Georgia will never see that chunk of land back, and thats if the Russians dont decide to carve up a buffer zone and take more.
Why? 90% of the population of S. Ossetia is Russian, and they faught a war to be independant of Georgia.
Action or not, stating what is correct and decrying what is incorrect is always the right thing to do.
Not saying is word is impotent.
I’ll defer to you on that one. That whole mishmash over there has me confused, and strategery in that area is not my strong suit.
I agree - it is not our call.
S. Ossetia is part of Georgia. Georgia is fighting S. Ossetian separatists.
So what if these S. Ossetian separatists are Russian citizens. There is no moral precedent for Putin to defend separatists in another sovereign country.
Reminds of the great ‘what-if?’ if the Cold War had occurred today——would the Dems be up to the job?
Now I see the ‘pubs cringing at the thought of standing up to the much-smaller Russkies.
We need to stand up to Russia and support Georgia. All the way. Threaten war if that’s what it takes. Go to war if necessary. Screw the Russians. Lying thugs.
The Ruskies will pull back within 3 days.

Are you volunteering?
The announcers were taking the Chinese line that “Russia has the right to defend itself, and Taiwan=China”.
They are Russian citizens because Russia went there and handed out passports like candy.
Costas is a dope.
The Georgians would love you. They are a wonderful people.
I fell so madly in love with them while there a few years ago. They want so much to be free of Russia, but I just don’t know if they need to worry about keeping all the extra pieces around them. Life is short.
I can give you a rough briefing if you want one. Just let me know...
I volunteered when Carter was President, and Iran had our citizens hostage.
What is it with this Country, now? A bunch of sniveling cowards we’ve become.
South Ossetia has been an independent nation for 15 years, as long as Georgia has. If Georgia has the right to independence from Russia, and Kosovo from Serbia by what bizarre logic should an already de’facto independent South Ossetia be denied independence?
If we back Georgia we would be backing the aggressor nation as they are the one who invaded South Ossetia and attacked Russian troops already deployed in Battalion strength there. I mean what the hell did the Georgians think was going to happen when they attacked Russian troops? It would be no different than if Mexico send troops across the border to seize New Mexico which was taken from them in the 1848 Mexican-American war.

Stalin is the one who made South Ossetia part of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic and I don’t see why we should go to war to enforce his dictates.
Thank you for your service.
I’m glad you aren’t President. War is the LAST resort. Not the first.
Any confirmation on those reports of Russian fixed wings getting shot down?
Thanks! Freepmail me and I’ll probably get back to you tomorrow. (getting too late for firing the brain up!)
You might not have noticed or might not care but our military is somewhat busy these days. Taking on a country with thermonuclear capabilities, home field advantage and a populace that can actually tell the difference between Georgia the US state and Georgia the COUNTRY probably isn’t the best idea.
Iraq wasn’t Georgia’s fight, but they are in it with us. We should protect our allies.
Anyway, Russia taking over Georgia isn’t good for the neighborhood.
Some reports say 2 some say 4,,,
Georgia may have lost aircraft too,,,
They ain’t got many to lose,,,
Sadly,,,I don’t think they will last very long,,,
Russia has them out numbered on all counts...

This is the first step.
Russian just sent in more troops though. They are calling them Peace Keepers.
Well we are still dealing with the results of decisions made by Roosevelt, Hitler, Stalin and Churchill. Something we should keep in mind when deciding what actions to take on the international scene. Our children will be the ones who deal with the consequences.
I hadnt realized that Stalin was part Ossetian. Communists and Socialists however dont always tend to be overly kind to their own ethnic groups.
With Abkhazia, Ajaria/Adjara, South Ossetia, and the Armenian minority in Georgia it could well escalate out of control quickly. The Russians are upset about Georgian support for Muslim terrorists in the last decade, possible NATO membership, and Azerbaijan still has an unsettled debt with Armenia. Good times, good times!
No one recognizes South Ossetia as independent, not even Russia. Russia says it is part of Russia, however, it is part of Georgia. Reminds me a little of the Sudetenland.
I’d say step ONE would be to get OUR people evacuated.
Next, watch Chechnaya and all Caspian Sea access very closely.
