WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States told Russia on Friday to withdraw its forces from U.S. ally Georgia and stop its air attacks on the tiny Caucasus state following fighting in the breakaway region of South Ossetia.

"We call on Russia to cease attacks on Georgia by aircraft and missiles, respect Georgia's territorial integrity, and withdraw its ground combat forces from Georgian soil," U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in a statement.

The Russians will ignore America and tell her to keep her nose out of Russia's "near abroad." As a nuclear superpower, they can do what they want. And they have the veto at the UN.

Dude there is no way to supply those people.

They are so screwed, they probably thought this big EU/NATO thing they were applying for will bring them more then vine and cheese.

IT was obvious thats the location that Russia was not going to let NATO get a foothold in. Probably due to them monopolizing the oil trade.

Russia is not Israel! I think Clueless Condi forgets that Russia is a very big country with over 150 million and a vast nuclear arsenal.

Boycott Russia to the max. Get it out of G8. No more favored nation status. Big tariffs on all goods. Hassle any visa application. Require any government contractor or vendor to certify that: 1) software used by their organization contains 0% Russian content; and 2) no software tasks are outsourced or subcontracted to Russia.

Russia is not going to accept NATO expansion up to her borders. This is that message being delivered to leaders in the Near Abroad that Russia is prepared to exercise her military muscle as well as her economic leverage to advance her interests.

Listening to the Olympics coverage in NBC, the two announcers (one was Bob Costas) started blaming Georgia for the attack and said that Russia was protecting itself from an invading Georgia military.

Action or not, stating what is correct and decrying what is incorrect is always the right thing to do.

Not saying is word is impotent.

S. Ossetia is part of Georgia. Georgia is fighting S. Ossetian separatists.

So what if these S. Ossetian separatists are Russian citizens. There is no moral precedent for Putin to defend separatists in another sovereign country.

Reminds of the great ‘what-if?’ if the Cold War had occurred today——would the Dems be up to the job?

Now I see the ‘pubs cringing at the thought of standing up to the much-smaller Russkies.

We need to stand up to Russia and support Georgia. All the way. Threaten war if that’s what it takes. Go to war if necessary. Screw the Russians. Lying thugs.

I fell so madly in love with them while there a few years ago. They want so much to be free of Russia, but I just don’t know if they need to worry about keeping all the extra pieces around them. Life is short.

South Ossetia has been an independent nation for 15 years, as long as Georgia has. If Georgia has the right to independence from Russia, and Kosovo from Serbia by what bizarre logic should an already de’facto independent South Ossetia be denied independence?

If we back Georgia we would be backing the aggressor nation as they are the one who invaded South Ossetia and attacked Russian troops already deployed in Battalion strength there. I mean what the hell did the Georgians think was going to happen when they attacked Russian troops? It would be no different than if Mexico send troops across the border to seize New Mexico which was taken from them in the 1848 Mexican-American war.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican-American_War

Stalin is the one who made South Ossetia part of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic and I don’t see why we should go to war to enforce his dictates.

You might not have noticed or might not care but our military is somewhat busy these days. Taking on a country with thermonuclear capabilities, home field advantage and a populace that can actually tell the difference between Georgia the US state and Georgia the COUNTRY probably isn’t the best idea.

What I find interesting is that Stalin although considered ethnically Georgian, was descended from Ossetians on his father's side.

It did not really matter how Stalin drew the borders within USSR at the time, but this Ossetian-Georgian left quite a surprise for Georgians and Ossetians half a century later.

Well we are still dealing with the results of decisions made by Roosevelt, Hitler, Stalin and Churchill. Something we should keep in mind when deciding what actions to take on the international scene. Our children will be the ones who deal with the consequences.

I hadn’t realized that Stalin was part Ossetian. Communists and Socialists however don’t always tend to be overly kind to their own ethnic groups.

With Abkhazia, Ajaria/Adjara, South Ossetia, and the Armenian minority in Georgia it could well escalate out of control quickly. The Russians are upset about Georgian support for Muslim terrorists in the last decade, possible NATO membership, and Azerbaijan still has an unsettled debt with Armenia. Good times, good times!
