No Vacation From McCain's Attacks: GOP Launches Three Ads as Obama Heads for a Week in Hawaii
The Washington Post ^ | August 9, 2008 | Jonathan Weisman and Michael D. Shear

Posted on 08/08/2008 7:04:41 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

With Barack Obama stepping off the playing field for a week-long Hawaiian vacation, John McCain's campaign released three new attack ads yesterday, signaling that the senator from Arizona would use the void to continue pummeling the character of his rival for the White House.

Obama's trip to Hawaii, where he spent much of his youth, comes after a week in which his Republican opponent dominated the news with his negative assault. Obama aides said the senator from Illinois is maintaining his lead in polls and will not be goaded into responding with character attacks of his own.

But the assaults on him continued yesterday, with new television ads and a radio spot portraying Obama as a lightweight celebrity intent on raising taxes across the board.

"Life in the spotlight must be grand," a female announcer declares to paparazzi-like images of Obama and adoring chants in the background. "But for the rest of us, times are tough."

That advertisement and a Spanish-language ad and radio spot claim Obama voted to raise taxes on families earning just $42,000, a claim based on his vote for a nonbinding, Democratic budget resolution that allows all of President Bush's tax cuts to expire in 2011, something Obama has promised he would not let happen.

Obama campaign spokesman Hari Sevugan called the ad "a lie" and "part of the old, tired politics of a party in Washington that has run out of ideas and run out of steam."

But McCain aides showed little concern for such niceties. "Like it would have crossed our minds to let up on the guy just because he's on vacation?" asked Charles R. Black Jr., one of McCain's top advisers, as McCain flew from Iowa to Arkansas yesterday.

Obama is making a big, BIG mistake here, IMO. His campaign has been struggling badly for the last month, he’s tanking in the polls (especially state-by-state and issue polls), and McCain now has all the momentum.

And this is a little off-topic, but I thought Obama had an event scheduled for Monday? Afterall, wasn’t that his excuse for not attending that townhall debate for the troops and their families at Fort Hood on Monday night. Guess even the Obama campaign is having trouble keeping up with the lies at this point.

No time for the troops, Obama’s gotta take a vacation.

I was at our county 4-H Fair this afternoon.

The Republicans and Dems both had booths.

I went over and chatted with the McCain folks and volunteered to be a challangers during the election.

LOL, they I looked over and noticed that the Dems booth was right next to the NRA booth.

I laughed and went over and chatted with them for about 10 minutes. I mentioned to them that they sure had an interesting spot. They laughed and said it sure is.

My younger niece was walking by the dems booth and they asked her if she was registered to vote. She said yes, I registered Republican.

Huh? Is there such a thing as a "positive" assault?

Of course he's going to criticize Obama. He's running against him. WaPo should have Obama banners in their newsrooms, they are so obvious.

Obama’s first “gathering” today was drenched by tropical showers. It appears that AKUA - the Hawaiian god - intended to cleanse Obama before he spent much time in Hawaii. I wonder how much we’ll hear of his real white grandparents who raised him or his very expensive, exclusive high school - hardly mainstream Chicago.

Yep lay low while John Edwards chips away even further at the the arrogance of first term Democratic Senator's goes . . .

Barack and John Edwards were both very ambitious first termers that had no ability or patience to wait and look as where that value system and inability to be patient got Edwards. This throws a shadow over Obama in my opinion. Democratic men arrogance=bad results.

Lots of Obama-in-Hawaii gags the McCain campaign could put together into good web ads to keep the buzz going:

(with Hawaii Five-O theme music in back ground...)
- “Energy independence, by properly inflating a volcano”
- “No sunscreen for me, didn’t the Republicans tell you I’m black?”
- “Nice to be back in the... uh, 57th state”
- Obama’s girls, “People here sound like Daddy without a teleprompter”
- Obama with T-shirt that says “Half Haole”
- “No, I don’t want to stay in the barracks, Barack is my name.”
- “Kids, let’s go see where Reverend Wright says Whitey caused the Japanese to bomb us.”
- Mahalo... that means, uh, hello?
- “Book ‘im Dan-o: Liberal One.”
- skinniest guy on the beach...

This is the ideal time (I hope and expect the McCain camp is planning this) to touch all the key sectors in McCain visits, show McCain vigorous and in-touch, and then toward the end of the week release a new ad that says “while Barack Obama needed a Hawaii vacation this week, John McCain has been hard at work visiting America’s troops-workers-citizens etc.”

Could really lay it on hard against Obambi, why does the “young guy” need a vacation so badly right now, etc.? He couldn’t spare an hour or two to visit wounded troops while in Germany but now he can spare a week to frolic in Hawaii, etc.

I reckon McCain should just stand there and not campaign? The WaPo apparently thinks so. The so called "negative campaigning" is the surest sign of a very healthy and vibrant republic. I'm all for it when you consider the alternative. It is amazing when you consider the FACT that the Lamestream media is the de facto campaign manager for the democrat challenger and McCain is tied or leading in the polls in August. Wow.

Agreed. I would absolutely unload on Obama this week if I were McCain. Press the attack while he’s not around to defend himself.

And you point out something very interesting; for all the talk of McCain’s age and such, Obama is the one that needs a week-long vacation. If I were McCain, that might not be something I’d use in an ad, but I probably would mention it in speeches and to the media.

“Obama’s gotta take a vacation”,

it must be to a place where he can commune with his roots
in a kind of global/cosmic/very important and telegenic

So-— If a Republican (even if a big RINO like McCain) puts up ads that blast the other candidate with facts and real issues, it is called an attack ad.

But if a Democrat produces an ad that is filled with lies, scare tactics, and hate, it is called an “issue ad”.

Do I have that about right?

Its not the “negative” assaults that have the dims and drive bys sucking eggs. Rather it is how effective mocking and ridiculing Obambi is because he is completely vacuous and devoid of any substance. He is lost without a teleprompter and is clueless about any meaningful policy issue if its not on his cue cards. And these ads are showing that dims are completely clueless when it comes to picking a candidate that will connect with the American people. To me this is further vindication of the 2006 congressional results. The results were about corruption, the negative direction of the war and the republicans straying from their core beliefs. They had virtually nothing to do with the quality of the candidates that the dims were running of their platforms. There was no wholesale acceptance of dim policies and liberalism.

It’s a total myth that the American people do not like and do not respond to the media-described “negative campaigning.”

With this caveat: the “negative” aspect must be a true statement or within the sphere of reasonable and legitimate spin of a candidate’s position.

IOW, negative is okay, lying is not. But the MSM do have a hard time differentiating lies.

I love the way the MSM classifies as a “negative attack” any Republican ad that is almost entirely composed of video footage of the Democratic candidate saying things he actually said in public. It’s not necessary to call Obama a vacuous empty suit; just showing a few clips from his speeches is more than adequate to make the point.

Something Dan Quayle tried to tell us about Billy Jeff's tax increases. Except the income threshold was $35,000. Media crucified him, but he ended up being correct.

BTW, one more fun filled all expense paid day at Ali Al Salem and I'm on my way home for a few months. Sorry had to tell somebody... :)
